The reconstruction videos that I just watched are proof of the capacity, courage and resilience of the Japanese people that I admire a lot. I am sad and touched to see it. I am Portuguese and always fond of Japan. There is a future but will never forget.

I don’t blame people not returning to live on the coast...it would be so hard trust the ocean after experiencing the total devastation it unleashed on their lives. My heart weeps, and swells for the people of Japan. Your strength and perseverance is inspirational.

At it's furthest, the tsunami inundated to a distance of 6 miles/9.6 kilometres inland, so it's not only people that lived on or near the coast that experienced it's horrors! After seeing the videos of that terrible day, I could not live anywhere I thought the water could reach. However, in addition to inundating to a distance of 6 miles/9.6 kilometres inland, the tsunami reached a maximum height of 128 feet/39 metres, and made landfall within approximately 12 minutes after the earthquake. Unfortunately, no one can accurately say how high or powerful the coming tsunamis will be, only that there definitely will be future tsunamis! Because of long-term underestimated figures for predicted tsunami heights and it's reach inland, many tsunami evacuation safety locations and structures which were crowded with evacuees, were inundated with great loss of life because they were located closer to the coast and at lower heights than any planners had considered a tsunami could ever reach! Irrespective of the wishes of residents, many coastal communities have mandated against rebuilding where the tsunami struck, choosing instead to relocate entirely to the closest location deemed suitable.

It will happen again, only worse next time, because of rising seas. Bad investment.

@Janis Joplin The point you so obviously missed is that no one had ever considered that a tsunami could travel so far inland, resulting in people not ever expecting it to happen and being wholly unprepared when it did.

Japanese people are so brave!!! Love and care from Greece 🇬🇷🇯🇵
Its strange to compare this city to, say, Hiroshima. After the nuclear strike, the city was furiously rebuilt to be even more beautiful. The work was commenced even before the sustained by byeffects of atomic radiation were fully understood. The tsunami cities, in sharp contrast, show little more than re-established property boundaries and roadways that lead nowhere.

This was shot from the area of the Shizugawa Junior High School (Google Maps overhead here is severely behind the times). If you look back towards the bay, a building can be seen against the bay. This was a wedding/meeting hall that has been preserved as a memorial in the memorial park. It was hosting a conference of senior citizens when the quake struck. The staff prevented the attendees from leaving them and evacuated everyone to the top floor...and then further evacuated to a maintenance and a machinery room on top of the roof. 327 people survived there. There is a high water mark placed on the building. Not able to be seen is the preserved steel skeleton of the 3-story Crisis Management Dept., which had over 100 city/government employees of whom 53 made it to the roof, and only 10 would survive. Among the dead there was 24-year old Miki Endo, who continued broadcasting over speakers the tsunami warnings right up to the moment of her death. The junior high school was a site where many survivors evacuated to, as was the unseen high school across the valley. What should be understood is that this ENTIRE area was fully developed, and completely destroyed. There is a remarkable video that was shot of the tsunami from the junior high school. The good news is that all the schools here were on high ground. The bad news is that many of the children who survived that day became orphans, or lost a parent. The average height of the tsunami at the town was 45 ft/14m, with a high water mark of 67.3ft/20.5m. As can be seen, what has been done is to significantly raise the height of this area, all part of the defense plan against future tsunamis.

One of the consequences of the tsunami that doesn't get discussed often is that where the videos show the foundations of houses and businesses that were swept from those foundations, the owners, if they survived, were still made to pay mortgage payments on their properties that were either obliterated into shattered debris or carried away entirely by the tsunami! This is wrong on every level, yet has been described by survivors living in emergency shelters or temporary housing. Those in temporary housing were having to pay rent in addition to the monthly mortgage payments on the homes and business premises that was lost. Additional hardships were caused because many lost their income when their workplaces or businesses were destroyed by the tsunami as well as the loss of their only means of transport!

@felixcat9318

@@Wirmish Unfortunately, yes! There are documentaries in which survivors raise these issues, because all that exists of their former properties are the concrete foundations, not even a scrap of the buildings structures having survived the receding waves taking the debris out to sea! To compel survivors, the majority of whom were left with only the clothes they wore when the tsunami struck, every other possession, valuables, vehicles, etc being swept away and forever lost, to continue to pay mortgages on properties that exist only on Google Street View is particularly cruel and it subjects them to overwhelming financial hardships.
Да, России о таких темпах строительства только мечтать.

Nature has always done this. Civilisations have been wiped out this way. These are smaller scale events. We tend to read about those in books but when we see these events in real life, we realise how little control we have over nature.
