Lovely George. My farther trained dogs, he was a natural at it. You very much remind me of him. By the way the word ruairi in my Yorkshire dialect means to cry.

That does make sense to call it back only when it is headed your way.

Fabulous. Sadly my springer pup who was perfect with recall to whistle in my 100 ft garden and house, once practiced outside buggered off chasing a bird then a deer and came back 20 minutes later. Meanwhile my heart had stopped. My whistle was on fire and my legs were jelly. This pup doesn’t care for treats loving words or strokes in the presence of prey. Despite starting training to ignore it from early weeks 🤦♀️ … should have got another Labrador !

Another great informative video George. What's the best way to familiarise a dog to livestock, ie. keep his mind on the hunting and not chase livestock?

Great video again. These setters sure do range out and fast. I am guessing in time she will hold point until released to flush and to give you time to get with in range.

Hi George. Brilliant video. Thank you. On the recall training how do you get Rua not to leave the field you are in. Trying to train mine on recall and when we are in the field if she gets on a scent trail. She will disappear through the hedge and off to the next parish.. should I follow her or stay in the field. In the field there are birds small sparrows or snipe and the occasional pheasant. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks.

You'll need to get reliable recall as a foundation. . Any dog with a strong prey drive requires strict recall training as first requirement, no real hunting until it's set in stone.Evidently your dog needs it

@@springerspanielfuldoes that mean no off lead recall training if your dog has a strong prey drive? It’s confusing. How do you practice recall apart from long lead. Even then I can tell you my springer would be 100% on a line .. until you dropped it

Great recall tips. I know now the mistake I made when starting recalling my Springer. I've worked hard over the last year to try and improve her recall, it's working but has taken a year to try and resolve.

She’s a lovely thing. Recently got a border terrier (my new fishing companion) thinking about training her up for a gun dog aswell. Any tips on training a border terrier for retreiving?

A terrier will hunt anything, including birds, as for retrieving best you get to the bird first!

That looks great! & I also have a whistle. However there is no way I would trust allowing my springer/poo off the lead in fear of him running off & not coming back. He’s 5 months old & tall as his father is a standard poodle. He’s also quite powerful. U feel it when he pulls on the leash & this boys nose is always on the ground sniffing. Takes me ages to walk him round the block 🤦🏼♀️Any advice would be much appreciated🙏🏼

He needs to be trained to walk to heel without pulling on the lead for a start.

Tried some of your techniques on my wife George when it was cup of tea time... including the whistle, 'good girl' and treats...didn't realise she knew how to use a shotgun 😅 great video, very interesting, love Rua@@springerspanielful
