Congrats on your 50th! You have reviewed 500 books on your channel and that makes for a nicely secure position as a critic. Bad satire is definitely one of the biggest letdowns. There are only a handful of times you can think to yourself "that's not funny" before the whole lack of funny just leaves you in the corner depressed on humanity's behalf.

I'm not even sure the book was *meant* to be a satire lol, but I think if that aspect had been leaned into it could have worked way better for me! It felt a bit like a missed opportunity for a satire, that instead read like a disjointed drama instead.

Big agree about the external mermaid references in Chlorine--they set up an expectation that wasn't met, and it would've been way cooler to have the mermaid-y aspect as its own bit of folklore! And The Adult was one of my favourite books of the year for sure, such gorgeous prose!

Linghun sounds like such a unique take on haunted houses, and i love the haunted town/village trope. the mulitple pov thing is hit or miss for me, but excited to give this one a try 🎃

I truly loved the Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi after that I dived deep into Charlemagne’s Biography; After Nora Beady book 2 (The Sergons Daughter) I’m currently reading Michael Haag’s Templar: History and Myth (Daniel Jones’ Templar on deck, in November probably).

I’ve heard of LINGHUN! I’m really into Gothic horror lately, so I want to check it out. I also read CHLORINE a few days ago and it was really interesting. It was described by another Booktuber as literary horror, so I was really curious. Some of the author’s descriptions were so vivid and good! Definitely a 4/5 stars for me. I read a bunch of books in October, but two that really stood out to me aside from CHLORINE are STARLING HOUSE by Alix E. Harrow and THE UNMAKING OF JUNE FARROW by Adrienne Young. Gorgeous prose!

Hell yasss queen, more lesbian fiction, I swear I need them now and you're my idol (rant time sorry) bc I'm a few years younger (20) and since I've started watching your channel I've been looking up to you and kinda relating to your view on human relationships (or at least that of your KZitem persona) so it got me wondering when you said back then you were ace/bi bc spoiler, I like my women (and I'm ace) too but I didn't know that until this year and I've been like : Shaelin was spreading the truth about sapphism and I just now understand their words, only now do I get why I've been in awe of how cool you are and it’s bc you're a 💅🏻 lesbian queen 💅🏻 (end of the confession, I am aware though that with your maturity you try not to attach importance to what your viewers think of you but I am grateful and I hope I wasn’t disrespectful, have a nice day 🌟)

Speaking of lesbian fiction, I'm wondering if you'd consider picking up Gideon the Ninth? It's not for everybody but I'd be super curious to hear your take on it.

You said you didn't really like multiple POVs with...then it jumped to something else. I'd love to know with what :)

Oops I sometimes just don't finish my sentences haha. I'm usually not a big fan of multiple POVs in different POVs (so some sections in 1st, some in 3rd, for example). It's not inherently bad, so this isn't to say this is bad writing as this really is a personal dislike for me, and there are books that still do this well and where it doesn't bother me. I think in the case of Linghun, it was otherwise such a contained, immersive novella, that the more authorial/manufactured feeling of the multiple POVs kind of dispelled that magic and atmosphere.

Thank you for clarifying! Yes, I know what you mean. The book I'm currently writing is the first I've done with multiple POV (2 of the same character, and 1 other) and I pushed against it because I'm not a fan either generally. I think sometimes it can feel like filler rather than part of the same story. @@ShaelinWrites
