Do wanna say one night i was on fire watch overlooking the black sandy beach of Iwo Jima. That was the most ghostly moment of my life. The moon was out, myself and some recon guy on the Island was probably the only ones awake. I could visualize all those Marines pinned on the beach I had seen in movies and books. Just this battle alone so many were given suicide orders yet they accomplished their mission. I tell you we all really need to take memorial day so much more seriously.

@Jstfm1 You make your mos decision with your recruiter. This is very important. If you have a date set for bootcamp your mos has possibly already been chosen. Make sure at all cost you're not going in on an open contract. This is what many recruiters try to pass off on unknowing signees. Open contract is where the USMC decides what your mos will be (they fill needed quotas this way). It's often been called the cook mos but grunt (0311) is what used to be mostly chosen when i was in it seemed.

I didn't create this video and the person I got it from or someone who was involved with its creation asked for the video to be renamed so I did. And there are no Seals or Rangers in this video. Yes, they are wearing older BDUs, but that doesn't mean they are Seals or Rangers, it means this video was done before MARPAT was fully implimented.

Force Recon has been around for a while like the others mentioned, however they only recently joined USSOCOM because of the funding that they were missing out on, the Marines didn't want to join USSOCOM because of the fact they thought all Marines are equally badass and didn't want to say these guys are way more special that your average Marine.

@SergeantKush Go to military.com and look at the workouts they have on there. There are workouts for every branch and spec ops training stuff. I'll be leaving for Paris Island in october. I'm 41 points shy of getting the min score to try out for these guys. For those that dont know, they take the scores from a PFT (physical fitness test) which is a max of 300 points, the min score they'll take is 285. Fail it and you're out for another year.

AFTER you're in a Recon BN, sections or individual Marines are temporarily assigned to other component units such as a MEU-SOC (Marine Expeditionary Unit - Special Operations Capable) or a MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) HQ element. When Recon Marines are assigned to a higher HQ element, then they are classified as "Force Recon" which means they provide recon reports to the higher HQ Force. Otherwise, the Recon section (squad or platoon) is assigned to an Infantry BN for direct recon support.

@XDJxEKOX Probably heavier, I can't say for sure about these guys. I know in the Army, we'd do ruck marches seemingly just for the hell of it. Our ruck sacs were 45+ pounds, add another 20 to 30 lbs worth of shit on your LBE and maybe a helmet and m16 and march 5 or 10 miles. It's a really fun way to get in shape. I'd imagine though, being a recon unit they have to carry that shit on an op. It's not like they have a motel 6 where these guys operate.

It the boys in combat across the ocean and all over the globe doing what Marines do best. So once you really understand what they do, comeback and tell me that your "300K" is worth more than your honor and the respect others give you. Because when your gone from this earth, no ones gunna remember your salary, but what you did with your life, people remember these

I was a Marine and I occasionally take a stab at a armydog, squid or flyboy. But if I were given a choice to have one hero in my lifetime it would have to be Army Ranger Pat Tillman. There are of course countless others deserving of this title but Tillman was a modern day old school patriot. (I love how politicians throw the word patriot around) Left fame and fortune to fight for his country. It was common place 60 years ago but in todays world Tillman was a rare gem.

777Phoenix11, et. al. Recon is a secondary MOS for which you must be recommended, apply to, and complete the school. This is done AFTER you have a primary MOS and some amount of time in service -- most Recon applicants are initially Infantry MOS though there are other MOS requirements in Recon including communications, artillery forward observer, armorer, and combat engineer. After you have completed the school you are assigned to one of the Recon BNs as your home unit.

Technically the Marine Corps is under the "Department of the Navy", even though it is a branch unto itself. When we were in the "hot zone", the Navy corpsman was there taking fire and taking care of our Bros. too. Incidently the Marine Corps is the longest continuous operating branch of the U.S. military. I've pulled missions with SEALs. A great bunch of guys to serve with. Never worked with Force Recon but saw them training nearby. They gotta be nuts. Glad they're on our side. :)

I served 4 years and 19 days in the USMC. Much of my tech training was on Naval installations. Pulled some missions with Navy Seals and UDTs in the Caribbean in 1969 and 1970. Developed some good friendships with sailors to whom I would trust my life. (Ask any Marine who has been in a "hot zone" what he thinks of a Navy Corpsman) And the Navy always seemed to have better chow. Someone must have trained Marine cooks to screw up the food. LOL Best of all, the paycheck, "Dept. of The Navy."

No matter who u r, what branch u r in, it is all for the same cause- protecting this land we call home. But what we do know is the marines are probably the most badass fighting force we have. one marine commander said to my dad b4 he was deployed to operation desert storm was- "When you men get out there, we will take the first, we always have; the enemy thinks they have killed you, a Marine. But what they don't know is this, When a Marines die, they just go to hell to regroup!!!"
