Throughout her breast cancer journey at Penn Medicine, Tawana said she was made to feel like family.
Dr. Julia C. Tchou, co-director of the Rena Rowan Breast Center, and Dr. Liza C. Wu, associate professor of surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, walked Tawana through her options and empowered her to take part in making her own cancer care decisions.
“Once I decided which surgery I wanted to do, then I was no longer worried,” Tawana said. “I knew that I was going to be all right after that point.”
Dr. Tchou calmed Tawana while Dr. Wu prepared her for a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction - something that convinced Tawana that she made the right decision in choosing Penn.
“I was more than a patient, they made me feel like family,” she said. “And when someone is family you take care of them and you love them and you always are there to support them, and I felt supported by the doctors, and the nurses, and the technicians, and the therapists, everyone … and it goes even down to the valets. Everyone took care of me.”
