I absolutely love the napoleon releases. Bent - come on home has hit my Spotify most listened to track of 2021 👌🏻. Completely agree on the unique sound; it always reminds me of finding bent whilst at school in 2002. Favourite tracks: napoleon - happy finish; bent - strictly bongo; bent - always, private road, come on home.

So cool you caught this video J C and I am pleased to meet a fellow Bent fan. It sounds like we discovered them around the same time. Programmed To Love and the Everlasting Blink will always be desert island discs for me.

Only watched about 10 mins, but so glad to hear about the new Bent record, I completely missed that since I'm a somewhat big fan! Was born in the mid 90's, found out about Bent around 2009, they always remind me of some sunny days in an English countryside in a time long gone by. So much of their work gives heavy nostalgia, as well as just great emotional depth (some of their discography bodes as some of the best romantic music I've ever come across). Simon's attachment to nostalgic things from his own world really comes through universally in the work, more so than most any other artists I've found. I've grown up a bit now and become a music artist of sorts myself, and from an emotional standpoint I can definitely say that Bent has influenced me a bit even if the style I write is very different. Will have to watch the rest soon! Edit: Ended up watching way more now than I thought I would! It's amazing to see some of the same influences (Massive Attack's Blue Lines, BoC's MHTRTC, Kate Bush's Hounds of Love) that are some of my influences too. Also didn't realise Metro Area was in GTA V's LSUR radio station, and I play that game quite a bit! Fantastic video, very conversational format so great interviewing on your part man. I don't think this would ever happen, but I'd love to give Bent a sample of my own work and see what they could do with it

Thank you so much for watching Autogen and I was extremely appreciative that Simon agreed to do this. He did agree to do a follow up, where we dig a little deeper into his collection. Hopefully, we can do that a bit down the road. I too was amazed how much I too had in common with Simon. It's fascinating to hear what inspires different artists and I am hoping I might be able to get more people on in the future. It was also great to hear how he's inspired you a bit as a musician. Do you have any of your work posted anywhere?

@@BarakaPDub That would be awesome to hear you guys talk more music! I'm still amazed at the link between Bent's Ariels and Pet Sounds, I've never really listened to The Beach Boys much but that influence is quite clear to me now! I've got some ambient/electronica stuff posted on Bandcamp at droneatlas.bandcamp.com/ and when I stop being lazy about it, I've got 3 albums to get onto Spotify haha Do you make any music yourself?

No. I am just a fan of music overall. I traded messages with Simon yesterday and he's in for doing another one. It may be several weeks though. I got a couple other projects in work at the moment.

Thanks Jacob. When people ask me about Bent and which album to try, I always steer them to Programmed To Love. That and Everlasting Blink will forever be desert island disks for me. The new record is fantastic as is Simon's solo work. I am holding out hope we might get a vinyl or CD release of Locational and Locational 2 someday but for now I am happy to have these guys digitally. I am also happy that Simon is quite prolific and he has other material in the can. Check out his Bandcamp page if you want to give things a deeper listen. Nail has also been prolific under the 89:Ghost banner and he put out a couple of wonderful ambient albums the past couple of years.

Wonderful video, Paul. Not sure if it's an interview exactly, but it felt like two friends catching up. Simon was warm, engaging and very generous with his responses, and you very gracious in letting the stories flow and providing some great questions and prompts. More than anything, it was a meeting of two obvious music fans. One thing I love is hearing an artist enthusing about music and their influences, hearing what makes them tick. Love how you cut in sound samples to back up discussion (eg hearing the vocals on Ariels while discussing Pet Sounds). Look forward to diving in and checking out more Bent, there's a warmth and humour in both Simon and his music that feels like it will sit nicely. Congrats on this, must be a bit of a kick for you to chat to a musical hero of sorts :) cheers, Dean

Hello Dean. So Simon and I connected many years ago and we were going to chat on Skype but we never did connect. This was my first ever chance to talk to him in person and yes, it was a lot like catching up with an old friend. And yes, I was just floored that he agreed to do this. Through the course of talking we just had so many points in common, it did feel like talking to an old friend. I think we talked at least an hour outside of this recorded video and I am hoping to feature him again down the road. Bent's music fits Simon's personality exactly and it's like he said there is the optimistic overtone to it all. If you're looking for a good place to start, I highly recommend checking out their debut album Programmed To Love.

We ended up having a lot in common which made the whole thing enjoyable. Bent made more headways in Europe than they did in the United States which is a shame. Their first four albums where in constant rotation for me for the last two decades. I do recommend their first couple of albums as good starting points. The new one is also a nice relaxed listen and a good return to form.

Fantastic, Paul. Thanks for the history on Bent and it's great when groups can reunite again and do what they do best. Simon reminded me that I need to get that first Massive Attack album! Absolutely loved the segment of him talking about Pet Sounds/Beach Boys. Haha and yes, gotta mention Bowie! And here we go with DM! Violator was such a monster record. Violator as an intro to DM will make anyone a massive fan, no doubt! I think I'm still one of the only ones who just can't get into Kate Bush. I just can't. Maybe she's just too eclectic for my taste, haha. This was so low-key and like two old friends catching up after a while. You didn't miss a beat! Really enjoyed this conversation. I'm off to sample Bent! Well done, Paul!

Hello Hanna and thanks for catching this one. The new record feels like them picking up where they left off. It was a good at giving me that nostalgic dose of joy when I first listened to their debut back around 2002 or so. The talk was good as I learned the sources of inspiration behind the records I know all too well. The Beach Boys reference in particular was a surprise but after he started talking about it, the pieces all fell into place. I was really amazed with how many records we had in common and I think that's why we connected with one another so well.

Oh man, 'Misty' on this new album 'Up in the Air' is just a fantastic song... it's sooo beautiful! It's really just as good as songs from 'Intercept' or 'The everlasting blink'. By the way, other songs from this new album are really good for a long time Bent listener like me. You said it: the Bent sound is really unique (and there is so much melancholy involved).

Absolutely loved this feature Paul. Simon really spoke with passion and love from not only a perspective of a music creator, but also a massive fan. I feel like I get a better idea of Bent's take and feel on music, and having sampled some of their music I feel the need to really jump in. Simon sounds like a great guy to sit back and converse with about music, both sampled and electronic, as this seems to be where a vast majority of his influences lie. I was engaged with this entire feature, and think Simon would be a great person to listen to on a feature like this again. Thanks for doing this. Well done sir.

If you're looking for a good introduction to them, I don't think you can go wrong with their debut. It's the one I really recommend folks start with and it is a desert island disc for me. I just hope at some point their catalog will get a re-release on vinyl. Their albums, Ariels and Intercept were only put out on CD but I would love to have these on vinyl. Thankfully, their others were done proper on vinyl (over two LPs) and can still be had at a reasonable price. Elton John has professed to being a fan of their music and that speaks volumes. Simon did tell me he would be willing to do a video again down the road so hopefully, we can do a bit of a deeper dive. BTW - A package should be at your door on Friday...provided the USPS isn't lying to me.

Hello Ken and so sorry to hear about the lack of information from the police. Don't give up on hope at all. Interestingly enough, my neighbor had his car stolen from his driveway. What's stranger is that immediately afterwards, Vivint came though our neighborhood and was offering up security systems. The coincidence is very strange. But given your tale, I opted to get my current system upgraded. I do hope things are picking up for you.
