I did something like this for a prank years ago; I had an old boombox with dual-tape cassettes and a CD player. I'd record my audio onto a disc, play it, then record that onto a tape. I did this on some OLD tapes, and made it like it was the personal journal of someone having visions of terrorist attacks in the new millennium but in the year 1997. I even added some time-period appropriate background noise (an episode of Good Morning America from 1997) for added realism. I sometimes wonder who found it, if they found it, and if they didn't shit a brick when they heard it.

Recorded my hardcore bands demo digitally and then dub them to tapes and they sounded extremely close to those bands I loved in the 90s/00's. It give it character that I couldn't get while recording, and I ended up recording the songs from the tape back to MP3s just so they had that sound I liked. It's not for everyone but it's for some!

Bloody fantastic video Bandrew! I just listened to this whole thing while driving around in the summer heat and it was the most entertaining thing I’ve heard in the past couple of years...especially when you played that portion from the tape! Boy, did that take me back to the eighties when I would drive around as a young lad listening endlessly to Johnny Farnham and INXS! Thanks for making this. It reinforced for me how bad four track recorders were, even though at the time, us young musos would drool over them. Cheers.

The sound quality is quite good if you use Dolby C or dbx noise reduction, or any other pre-emphasis. But some of the last 4-track machines made had no noise reduction, which is terrible. Also you can record much hotter on cassette than you’d expect, which helps greatly with the noise floor. It’s nothing like digital recording where you clip extremely easily. I regularly recorded drums and bass way into the red with no clipping.
@chinmeysway

I’ve come to enjoy tape w no noise reduction.. if high frequency of tape already dips out at about16khz then Dolby takes away too much hf content. Try both- lots of detail is lost w Dolby buttons on!
@Rompler_Rocco
4 жыл бұрын
The Portastudio is calibrated for Type 2 tape and will have very low noise.. especially if recorded hot, at double speed, or with dbx noise reduction. Metal tape is useless unless the tape deck has dedicated settings for using it. Also the type 0-4 scale is a little off. Type 0 is an informal term for low quality Type 1 tape, Type 2 is chrome or high bias chrome equivalent, and Type 4 is the niche Metal particle tape. Type 3 is a rare & short-lived combination of Type 1 and Type 2 tape. Who cares besides me, though? Not sure. Anyone here care?

Great video, Bandrew. After using the cassette audio recorders there was VHS audio recorders that used the video tracks to record the audio which increased the bandwidth so it sounded way better. Not as good as high bit and sample rate digital audio though. Thanks for the video, brought back some memories for me...

In my - at this point - embarrassingly long career, I have used every audio recording format known to mankind except wire. The only one I routinely miss is cassette. I used to half-seriously wish someone would create a giant 24 track cassette. For me, the cassette was the perfect blend of convenience, reliability, length, and sound quality. It was a representative of what I was working on that virtually anyone could check out anywhere. Home, car, portable, etc. The tape could be cued, ejected, slapped in somewhere else - mash go and listen. Every cassette machine would more or less play every cassette. DAT and DTRS were supposed to do this digitally with flawless quality. Ha ha ha, the joke was on us. Never have money, time, and aggravation been more wasted on any other recording format. I could have bought a new car with the hell those put me through. I still keep a Marantz dual well cassette machine in my studio. Though I haven’t used it in many years, I dust it regularly and look at it longingly.

Bit late to this party, but I noticed that you used a 110 minute tape. The longer the tape, the thinner they generally are. This probably contributed to your drift as well because thinner tapes stretch a little. If you can get hold of a 60 minute tape, give it a try (and hope it's not all in the mechanism).
@chinmeysway

Do the kids even know what tape is? It's like dinosaurs to them. I remember 4 track recorders from the good old days when my hair was ALL brown and not the patchy brown and grey it is now, which is probably the early 90's, in the years after I left school and I crossed paths with folk in bands and making synth music demos with sub bass that was more violent warm hiss than sub bass. My brown and grey hair tho? Awww I feel so damn old. As for a podcasting experiment, I wholeheartedly approve of such madness but I know that some people have used the amplification & signal path circuitry to get that tape sound as it's part of musical history and not needed to deal with wow/flutter from old recorders. I suspect that digital audio is fed in, recorded (but discarded) and then the output, monitoring or headphones output is recorded - that would be the manner I'd attempt it....... DO IT.. DO IT!! The other manner, I'd consider, would be to sample the tape and then painstakingly re-sync the audio to the original, which would be a right pain in the rear end. Damn, I think the last time I heavily used a cassette deck or walkman (term covering all such similar devices too) was probably before 1997 and opted for radio instead cos it used less battery power.

If I may ask. Whut does the mixer do in this signal chain, just using for EQ?
@Podcastage
11 ай бұрын
I was using the mixer because for my podcast I had stereo music as well and I needed to route that into the recorder as well. Therefore I ran the preamp line into the mixer, and I also had a phone running into the mixer. Then I ran stereo out from the mixer into channel 1 & 2 of the tape recorder and panned those channels left and right so that I could get the stereo audio of the music. Had it just been the mic I could have run out of the preamp into the line input.

I just started producing and distributing a podcast that is originally recorded completely on cassette (before I digitize it for release). It has a really cool sound and each episode sounds a little bit different because the sound of each cassette tape is different! It's called "The Modern Imagination with Slapstick Machete" and it's available everywhere (including my youtube page!). If anyone is interested I could make a video showing how I clean up the cassette audio to make it a lot better sounding for distribution!
