Involving our community in the gathering and sharing of information about their local holy wells is a
primary aim of ‘The Audit of the Holy Wells of the County of Galway’ which was commissioned by
the Heritage Office, Galway County Council, as an action of Galway County Heritage and
Biodiversity Plan 2017 - 2022. The Audit is funded by Galway County Council and the
Heritage Council.
Through social media call-outs, press releases and radio interviews, the invite has been extended to
the community of the County of Galway and a great response has been received with photos and

through the Galway Community Heritage website and community social media channels.
This film ‘Recording Galway’s Holy Wells’ has been produced for National Heritage Week 2020
‘Learning from our Heritage’. Its purpose is to help in the recognition of the intrinsic features of holy
wells and help in the recording of this very important aspect of our intangible cultural heritage.
