It's so funny. In nearly *ever* scenario, I've always preferred the LDC. Even when people tell me I shouldn't. hahaha

Yes,now I know why I couldn't set up my microphones, one overhead low above drumset make's a difference.

There's something about a mono ribbon mic as an overhead that is just tasty. You get enough beef from the drums, but you also tame the cymbals enough to not be overpowering or piercing. I have the Fathead, based off your high praise and recommendations, and it's a killer mic.

You and I are on the same page!! I have a ribbon video or two coming in November. Fatheads are awesome!

Can't wait to see those! And just today tried a Fathead mono OH again with just a kick mic, an EV RE320. Came out super nice.Wish I had a snare mic as well as I wasn't as happy with the snare sound, but it is workable. The toms we're just pure tone and deep.

It's amazing how small the kit sounds through the small diaphragm condenser. When you switch between it and the other two the drums just open up and sound larger.

all due respect, but I have to disagree -- the large diaphragm condenser and the ribbon condenser make the kit sound muffled, the pencil condenser just brings out the true sound of the drums -- at least for my ears

@@LanceWillMakeIt To each his own. But I couldn't disagree more. I have listened to this video 10 or 12 times now on my two sets of studio monitors. And the LD mics sound much more like the real sound which my drums make in a room.

@@MeTuLHeD The more I listen to it, I'm actually changing my mind -- the SD are sounding way too concentrated now that I'm thinking about what my drums sound like irl 🤔 do you have any recommendations for LDC's for $300 or less?
@MeTuLHeD

If you can stretch that budget JUST a little, then this one is a no-brainer. The best sounding low cost LDC on the market imo. roswellproaudio.com/collections/microphones/products/mini-k47 If you MUST hit the $300 mark, then this one is a strong contender. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LA220--lauten-audio-la-220-large-diaphragm-condenser-microphone It's an excellent all around mic. You will NOT be disappointed.

Great tests here! For this, are you turning on only the overheads or the kick/toms mics are turned along?

Great video! The fathead would not be my first choice for a drum OH though, too dark for my taste. Much better ribbons for that purpose

Hi! newbie here. I’ve seen drummers using a pair of large diaphragm condenser and also drummers using small diaphragm condensers ( pencil condenser? ) as overheads. Now, I wonder which type is better and what are the sonic differences between those two as overheads. I hope you could clarify this to me. Thank you.

It’s probably too much to answer this question in a comment but here is a GENERAL guide. Small diaphragm condensers tend to be quick with transients which makes them very articulate. This is one reason why engineers (and a lot of drummers) like them for overheads and acoustic guitar. They are usually not as full sounding as LDC mics and also have a higher self noise. Though the latter is not really an issue when recording drums. Large diaphragm condensers tend to have a more full sound with extended low end compared to an SDC. LDCs also tend to be a bit rounder sounding. Which is why you see them on toms and outside kick a lot. Personally I love LDC mics for overheads and they tend to do a great job of capturing a full drum sound on their own. This is obviously an over simplified take on the differences between the two mic types but it’s a good starting point. Not all SDC mics are created equal and the same goes for LDC mics.

As far as one being better than the other that really depends on the sound you’re going for. There is no real “better”. I think the first question to ask is do you want to use your overheads for an overall drum sound or mainly cymbals and a little of the kit. That might help you narrow it down.
