A showcase of this (almost) completely recoverable rocket I designed in SFS.
Both first and second stage are recoverable and can be landed back near launch site;
RTLS for 1st stage and AOA for 2nd stage (in Space Shuttle terminology.)
The crew capsule and small service module doesn’t feature an engine, but it can reach a space station at an altitude of about 300km on its RCS thrusters alone. In place of an engine, there is a docking port for a bigger tug that can shuttle the capsule between space stations in earth and lunar orbit.
I’m not calling the rocket “reusable” since there’s technically no way to reassemble parts of rocket back on the ground yet. Technically, it would still be “recoverable” if it doesn’t land in one piece or near the launch site, but those are the goals of this rocket. Only part that will be burned up in the atmosphere are interstages, fairings, and the service module for the crew capsule.
Footages are shortened for the pacing of the video - There was multiple attempts on landing 2nd stage since it took me multiple tries to land right next to the launch site. I’m merely a beginner at this game. (Have only started playing it earlier this month.)
Full mission includes crewed spacecraft visiting space station, space tug bringing spacecraft to another space station in lunar orbit, lunar lander undocking from the space station and landing on the surface next to lunar base and returning back to the space station, space tug carrying the spacecraft back into initial space station in earth orbit, spacecraft departing from space station and reentering back to earth near launch site. You can view the full mission as well as failed attempts here [I will put link here once I finish the video]
