I had one of these ages ago! Fantastic technology for the time. Ended up not being able to read tapes so I got rid of it. I should have kept it after seeing this video.

@@Kimble221 I have 6 digital 8 devices that all play analog. I think I have more than enough equipment. I'm dumping all the surplus equipment. Conversion work is slowing down because competition is advertising lower rates and I am not about to get in a race to the bottom.

@@12voltvids I am finding the same thing happening here in Aus. I have invested alot of money in this business including an eyewatering amount for a Cypress GL TBC and I don't believe that I will ever earn the money back now.

Do you have an opinion as to why 8mm video tapes did not take the place of VHS? I know at some point in time you could buy pre-recorded movies on 8mm. I have a couple of films on 8mm tape. So I know there was an attempt to market these. Any thoughts as to why they never really took off in the home video market?

Sony tried. The problem was VHS was already too well established and people quite frankly didn't care about picture quality. They cared only about the cost of the machines and the availability of rentals. Remember there was Betamax before and it had a better picture as well but never dominated. 8mm and Hi8 did dominate the camcorder market and Sony hoped that the suscess it had in cameras would spill over into home video, and it might have had the large movie rental stores embraced it, but there was a new format out called DVD and that took the wind out of 8mm sails. 8mm was adopted by the airline industry for in flight movies. It was used heavily by videographers and even news crews were using Hi8 as a cheap alternative to betacam. They generally sent small hi8 cameras and inductrial hi8 cameras out with reporters and then edited straight to betacam for the air tape. My EVW300 came from a local TV station. VHS was basically a lost leader there in the later years. So many companies were pumping out plastic decks that sold for next to nothing.JVC had very little marketing skills, and they didn't do the VHS format any favors by giving away licenses to make machines. Of course it worked out well for joe 6 pack where he could go to the local discount store and pick up a vhs hifi machine for under 100 bucks. (The last new VHS I bought was a Panasonic Hifi and I think I paid 89.00 for it in 2002.)
