Shawn, did you ever speak to the former owners of U-534? We're building a new U-534 museum and in our sister museum (Western Approaches) we've got a memorial for Canadian forces who served in the Battle Of The Atlantic. Telling Roderick's story would be great since it really shows the cost on both sides.

@@howtofixauboat I have never spoke with the former owners and I wish my grandfather was still around to hear about new discoveries. The George Cross is currently located in the Ottawa War Museum. One of the best, if not the best U-boat restorations and historical displays is the U505 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Il. I grew up south of Chicago and have been to the museum dozens of times thru the years and seen it when it was an outside display next to Lake Michigan. Now its all restored and inside a climate controlled building and it is absolutely amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing it again, and again... it will be around a lot longer than I will.

I can remember visiting Wallasey docks, seeing this very impressive U- Boat towering almost into the main road, as it was so long, and took up so much room. A few years later, as to allow disabled access, when it became a museum exhibit, they cut it into separate pieces. They should have left it on the seabed.
@stottybox3185

That is correct, i went on the tour of the boat years ago, i think all the exhibits at the museum were scrapped, including hms bronnington the mine sweeper commanded by prince charles in his navy days. The idea was that it could be welded back together in sections much like the way modern ships are made nowadays, just which someone would transport it back to the u boat pens and do just that.

Don't listen to this guy. Yes, it was cut into 3 pieces, but not bc of disabled avcess, when the museum that had housed the boat went bankrupt, the boat was going to be scrapped all together, but another museum managed to pull enough money to house it, but they didn't have the kind of money and resources to ship the whole thing to its new location in 1 piece, so they cut it up for ease of moving. It's still sad it was cut up, but there's no need to go and make up reasons

curtis mcmanus It was cut up to preserve it, not destroy it! It now resides in Birkenhead on the Wirral, England in pieces that have perspex viewing windows - it's an incredible sight and also includes an internal museum of objects found inside the sub, including personal items such as pipes and shaving kits etc, even the sole of a boot. Oh yeah, and about 100 morphine ampoules which I'm surprised haven't been robbed as there's no reason why the morphine shouldn't still be active. The sub was due to be scrapped after nobody wanted to purchase her and pay to have her moved again - she now sits with a fully cleaned and repainted outer hull showing the damage from the mines that sank her, and the eerie way her AA guns are seized pointing skywards where they were last fired - if you can get to see this I'd highly recommend it, the engines can clearly be made out including component parts, rocker springs for the valves etc the huge batteries, the cramped conditions etc, it's a truly humbling experience. Outside of her is mounted on of several experimental torpedoes, the only real clue as to why she refused to surrender as nothing else of any significance was found - except the infamous (and up to that point from a German perspective still secret) enigma, the rusted remains of which are indoors with many other exhibits. The 3 sections and the indoor exhibition make for quite a small 'museum' from which you could wander around in 30 minutes - if you are interested in what's actually on display though you could spend an entire day there. I first saw saw it as a rusted ghost after it arrived and where it sat until it was doomed for scrap. The intention was to make it part of existing decommissioned vessels such as the sub HMS Onyx last served in the Falklands dropping off UK special forces, and a small frigate, I think HMS Andrew but I may be wrong about that name, and the fact it was a frigate - it was a war ship, my knowledge is very sparse regarding naval vessels as my interest lay in aircraft. A fantastic collection of aircraft parts found locally was kept at Fort Perch Rock lighthouse and Fort, but this suddenly closed for renovation work and never reopened to the public again - I have no idea where the exhibits went, or if they're still inside the Fort but that was another place that seemed to hold an aura of humility and memories, and I was about 8 the first time I visited there. Anyway, get to it if you can as it remains 1 of only 4 U boat displays, there is a fully intact sub in the US I believe which you can board as it was never sunk. Access to HMS onyx was also permitted while it was in Birkenhead although that's off to sunnier parts of the world somewhere now.

51:40 Was the war worth it? First Britain and France declared war on Germany for invading Poland, at the end of the war Poland was taken over by Stalin and much of east Europe anyways. Their asking a American if the was worth it. Did they really think Germany was a threat and would cross the Atlantic and D-Day the US coast ? A country with 4 times Germany's war production capacity and twice there population. The States when to war with Germany to get out of the depression that's all.

Anyone notice the Olympic branding on the U-Boat at 3:14? Was it comissioned during the Olympics in Germany?

Someone answered that earlier. Has something to do with the captain being at training school during the Olympics U-boat command. 1936 Berlin Olympics. Google it it tells you Officers chose the rings as their emblem

Any ammunition, torpedo, depth charge, shells left within a sunken ship or submarine remains capable of detonating for decades or longer. As the explosives deteriorate, they can become very unstable and can spontaneously detonate. Aside from the fact sunken submarines in particular are also almost always containing the remains of the entire crew, they also have as many as two dozen or more torpedoes aboard, each one with as much as 800lbs. of high explosives in the tubes and the torpedo rooms. If one detonates within the boat, the whole boat explodes. That and the fact they are often severely damaged, deteriorated or both are why a sunken submarine is a particularly dangerous place for divers. Most sunken submarines lie in very deep water, often imploded, ruptured, fragmented because they were destroyed by explosions inside the boat or by a bomb, torpedo or depth charge exploding on or near the hull. Others collapsed because they took on water and sank below crush depth, which for German U-boats was more than 300 meters below the surface. For 28,000 German sailors, their U-boats are their final resting place below the sea, until the day the sea gives up her dead.

"Even Normandy was worth it" The western allies focus so much on Normandy. Meanwhile 50 or 100 thousand people were dying daily on the Eastern Front. In the east there were several battles with 1 million casualties on each side, Stalingrad, Moscow, Berlin, Kursk, etc... Normandy had no effect on the outcome of the war. Normandy just made sure America and the UK took the western part of Europe and the Soviets didn't take everything all the way to the Atlantic, but it wasn't the reason Germany lost. The war was already lost by the time of the Normandy invasion.

Sadly, instead of coating it with a preservative so people could see it intact the lame British chose to cut it up into sections and put it on display. Would have been a better fate to have been left to finish decaying on the bottom of the sea.

The original museum had it cut into pieces for ease of transportation but they went bankrupt. Another museum took over it didn't have the money to reassemble the sub. I agree they should have left it where it was
