a little trick to get the volumetrics noise-free: Render in cycles without the volumetrics, and then render again in eevee with the volumetric pass. you can then comp the volume pass over the cycles render. Since Eevee renders so fast, you have the low render times for cycles but still a smooth volume (in eevee you can increase volume quality so it looks good). I did this trick in a short film with a creature aswell and I think it turned out pretty well

@@DECODEDVFX Another way is to get the K-CyclesX build on the Blender Market or Gumroad. The rendering engine is optimized to use more GPU resources (if you have an Nvidia GPU) for faster rendering and includes a great denoiser for volumetrics in Cycles. Watching the shot at the intro what went through my mind was, "How did he do those cables?" Brilliant effect problem-solving there. Glad to see I'm not the only one who leaps through hoops like that. Having devoured Cinefex's special issue devoted to Jurassic Park when the film came out I enjoyed seeing how your solutions in some ways mirrored the techniques they used, though with the advantage of nearly 30 years of technology advances. That it's now possible to recreate a scene that completely changed the special effects industry in Hollywood, and revolutionised filmmaking, on a piece of free software at home is something even John Hammond wouldn't have imagined.

Probably the biggest mistake is that you let the IK's in legs to hit maximum length, causing the very straight/locked legs. Setting them even few centimeters(what ever scale you use) looser will make it look much more natural, especially when he steps to ground level from the fence. If you ever need different renderers, I have ton of C4D work and render machine.

I worked in VFX for 15+ years. We've hired people that had far lower quality work in their reels. And I don't mean that in a negative tone either. This is quite impressive. Better than what most people can do entirely on their own. Shots you see are usually layers of work done by numerous (even dozens) of people all focusing on specific elements. To take on everything and see it to completion with this level of quality is a huge win.

Not really. We are so dependent on many individuals work to begin with. Yes it is amazing what creators can crate on there own now (And cost nothing like Blender) But it has most to do with work done from so many individuals over DECADES. And all of this grate tools and resources are resting on Windows. Linux is shit do not get me wrong. But what is it really that as a individual you can do with a computer? They are nothing without consent outside help and outer individuals involvement. And even now it took allot of people to create that shot in the movie. How many was involved in creating the tools and such to make the blender render? It is maybe not something we think of allot anymore, but the work put into it all to be possible is crazy. Just trying to compile blender from source shows the complexity of it all. Not to talk about writing and developing the dam hardware and software for everything to work.

Love this so much! Damn that is inspiring work. One quick little tip would be not to let the joint in your IK rig lock. Specifically, in your walk animation, the Rex’s legs lock at the knee when his legs are fully extended. This will make Rex look like it’s walking with a peg leg. Very stiff, and make the weight of the creature feel unnatural. Bring the COG control down a touch to keep just a little bit of bend in the knee. It’s stalking prey, it should look as though it’s ready to pounce at something, which it can’t do with a locked up leg. What an amazing project. Thanks for sharing your process.
