In this production tutorial, I use the elements of “Watermelon Sugar“ by Harry Styles to create my very own pop-rock track.

In order to create a track like Harry Styles, I started with a basic drum groove played on a live kit. I created a loop from it, and used that as the basis of my track. Next came Rhodes electric piano, guitars, bass, and some other fun extras. I tried to keep the spacey, floating vibe of the original track by keeping the parts simple, and using some phasing effects.
It will probably be the subject of another video, but this song has a very characteristic Dorian progression, using the i, bVII, and IV chords. I try to use the same chords in a new way in my track, while emulating all of the specific instrumentation that makes the original so great.
