This Ice Trikes Adventure Recumbent Trike has been fitted with a Tongsheng TSDZ2 electric bike conversion kit and 36v 17ah battery.

The TSDZ2 is a popular solution for adding electric assist to a recumbent tricyle. Although the Tongsheng motor isn't specifically designed for recumbents it is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to add e-assist to your trike.

This is my third recumbent trike electric conversion and I have to say I'm totally hooked!
There are a few things to consider when choosing the right kit for your trike.
1. How much power do you need?
2. Battery range
3. Added weight of motor and battery
4. Potential long-term reliability issues with the motor
5. Hub motor vs crank motor.
The Tongsheng TSDZ2 is generally a good motor, but like all electric motors it is not perfect. The main weak points with this motor are the blue nylon gear (inside the motor), Sprag clutch (one-way bearing) and Torque sensor.
If you are going to be covering a high mileage or using this motor for long-distance touring then I would definitely recommend taking the correct tools and some spare parts.
Small hub motors are generally more reliable in the long-term and may be more suited to long distance riding.
Having said that the Tongsheng TSDZ2 is an excellent little motor and costs a fraction of the price of a Shimano Steps e-assist system. I personally haven't experienced any issues so far, and I have installed nearly 30 TSDZ2 motor's in the last 12 months.
