Nice explanation, thank you very much. We just bought a 2024 MU-X They've raised the GVM to 2800. The dealer went through the 3500kg caravan example with us after we paid for our car and fitted towbar, racks etc. We were left with 45kg of load capacity. But I think he underestimate the wife and my weight. We never wanted to tow a big van anyway and will be seeking out as light a van as possible. It's BS the way they quote these Max Towing weights, they should specify that it only works with a single person in the vehicle, and a Jockey at that..

I have met so many people that are towing vans that have very little understanding of their weights or even if they are compliant. I think for some it’s in the too hard basket and others know they are overweight but choose to ignore it. Good to see you have done your homework and the dealer explained your vehicles weights. Appreciate your comment. Cheers!

Thanks for the video and good explanation. We have the same MUX and currently pull a 16ft Jayco pop-top. No problems weightwise with this combination, however we have just ordered a new heavier van with almost the exact specifications as per your example. I have done the same calculations you did and came to the same conclusion. The biggest issue is the GVM of the MUX. Luckily we don't carry much in the tow vehicle and will fit within the GVM and GCM even after hooking up the van with full water tanks. I also agree with other comments about dual cabs and large caravans. Surely they can't be all legal. Even pulling the pop-top around with the MUX I am very aware of the weight I'm lugging around especially on big long hills, and can only imagine how those big vans affect the vehicle performance and stabilty!

Good job Sep , I don’t own a caravan but I am fitting out a camper van and I will be watching the weights very closely now ! Plastic buckets instead of steel sliding draws for a start !

thee answer to that question is "phuk-no" once you mod the vehicle up with aftermarket crap the warranty becomes "PYAG" similar to the tax system "Pay AS You Go" you pay ! and they Go and fix it !

Great video and well explained. We have a 2021 MUX (last of the old model) and have a 17' van on order which will be similar weight to your van. Can I ask what your cars rear axle weight is when towing. Our car is stock and it's just the 2 of us so GVM hopefully will be fine, GCM will be well under so it's only the rear axle weight I can see as a problem. Thanks in advance and keep the videos coming.

The only numbers I have written down are from a 4 deck go weigh weighbridge which included the van and are as follows. Car was unloaded but full of fuel and included only me as the driver. Car front axle 1300kg rear axle 1020kg tow ball down load 200kg. So to help you further when we load the car the total weight we put into it is 180kg which includes the second person and luggage which we spread some along the rear floor the rest in the luggage area. Add together = GVM 2700kg Hope this helps. Cheers!

So after watching all of that. What replacement vehicle are you getting. Looks like the mux is maxed out. Even with a gvm upgrade to the mux your still asking a lot of that poor vehicle.

The items referenced in the payload are examples only of what some vehicles have fitted to them. I do not intend to have any of them fitted to our vehicle and there are two reasons for this. One we have found in our travels that those items are not necessary for our situation and two, if we wanted to we cannot because of the GVM limit. If we were looking for a vehicle that had the capacity to cope with a major weight increase I would look for something that did not need a GVM upgrade such as a light Isuzu 4x4 truck type vehicle. Hope this helps. Thanks for your comment. Cheers!
