When that happened when I was playing, I always thought John couldn’t help but wish to connect with an old friend about Arthur, to let it be known that Arthur died a good man. And I found it sad but also realistic that everyone else was in a hurry to leave, or to not really talk about it, because they moved on with their life. And the fact that John was the one who brought it up showed us that he didn’t move on like Arthur told him to.

Mentioning Arthur brings back the time where they were on that mountain, he wanted Arthur to come with him, but Arthur told him to leave him behind to buy him some more time, and John couldn't do anything since Arthur made up his mind... John was like Arthur's younger brother. An older brother feels responsible for their siblings and will do everything in their power to save them, whether or not they'll be repaid. Everything he does, up until the final act of the game, is not of his own accord. He doesn't give a damn about his old "comrades", something he vocalizes several times throughout the first game. At that point, they are now between himself and his family, and those who dare to separate him from what he cherishes most tend to end up dead. There are so many characters who carry over story wise that him not being mentioned even once makes zero sense. I get they didn't have this story fleshed out when they made RDR1 so couldn't put Arthur into the game, but the story arc just feels really disconnected given how big a role Arthur plays in getting John to where he finds himself at the start of RDR1 and the actions he takes throughout that game.

Arthur passing might be the only thing John never got over, i mean, he saw Arthur slowly get worse and worse in health and never knew why, and Arthur was the only one of the gang he counted as an actual brother, he probably blamed himself for Arthur's death thinking if he stayed or he could've convinced to cone with him a little further he'd still be alive for awhile until he found out he had TB. Arthur possibly could've lived if they went another way, copperhead landing wasn't too far, or if Arthur instead of returning to camp went to get John's body because at the time he thought he was dead and he'd find John and they'd go there. But Arthur's death helping john was the best one for him. He knew what he did in his final moments were right and was at peace.

I always felt like John harboured some sort of survivors guilt when it came to Arthur. At the end of RDR2, it's clear that John begins to really look up to Arthur and is still trying to live up to his sacrifice in the epilogue. Keep in mind that John is found by Agent Ross entirely because of his revenge mission against Micah; a mission Arthur in his final days would have disagreed with. If I were John in RDR1, I don't think I'd be able to talk about Arthur either. John turning back to his old ways and hunting down his former gang members makes Arthur's sacrifice seem worthless. It doesn't matter if John didn't have a choice. It seemingly invalidates the sacrifice of someone that John believes was better than him. How do you emotionally confront that?

John had also grew up with hosea and dutch but remember he left for a period of time and got to experience something other than the outlaw life. By the time the Pinkertons were chasing them down, he knew his time was close even if his tuberculosis would never have shown itself. The pinkertons were gunning down the last of the outlaws left in the west. That’s why he tells John to get out of the life, to live for his son jack and Abigail. Because John had something to live for while all Arthur ever lived for, Dutch’s fantasy ideals, we’re all squashed when he saw how quick Dutch cast him aside.

In their last scene Arthur tells him to “not look back”. It was his final wish for John to move on with his life and his past. Interestingly enough John says something similar to Jack right before dying

John doesn't talk about Arthur like you don't talk about a lost sibling, you keep them with you always, but if you talk about them, no matter how happy you try to feel, in the end you only end up remembering how lonely you feel without them at your side.

Quite ironic that John is the one telling his family to forget; and yet he’s the one who wasn’t able to let go of it

It makes sense as the years go by to not speak of trauma like that. You deal with it, and in the struggle of daily life, those memories become quiet personal moments of reflection. They aren't really for discussion because they're so personal.

It’s still crazy to me that rockstar started developing RDR2 right after RDR1 came out
