That first group may not have been suitable for shooting but it was a magnificent piece of stalking to be able to get so close to them.

Fantastic. If that is not what a real stalk is then it is certainly the best counterfeit.

I thought on hill stalking the ghilly always carried the rifle until the moment it came to pulling the trigger?

Just depends If its your rifle you carry it if its the estates rifle the estate stalker (ghilly not fond of that term on a stalking estate as he is the real stalker )

Ah. Empty gun. Nice to know. If another such video is made, perhaps a subtitle saying that might be added? Just an idea. Is this a different species than the red deer in New Zealand? Or are they introduced from this stock? I always am amazed how much these guys look like elk, the American wapiti.

@@vinecottage8732 They're hunting, the same rules aren't observed as on a range when in the field because it's simply not possible to. Holding a weapon by the balance point is how humans have hunted for hundreds of thousands of years, it's what we default to, it's simple human physiology. You're more likely to fall down a hill and break your neck than you are going to shoot someone accidentally, that's what the hunter should be preoccupied with; where he's stepping. I haven't heard of a shooting accident while stalking in Scotland, so they evidently know what they're doing. If it's any consolation to your worried mind; that's a Blaser R8, and it's de-cocked. It's less dangerous in that state than a sharp stick.
