Roman historian here. Lister appears to be reading Homer's Iliad which is a Greek work. Kryton gets it wrong. Virgil's Aeneid is a Latin work about Aeneas fleeing Troy and heading for Italy. Love this podcast by the way.

Maybe it was a subtle gag at AI getting things wrong but delivering it with authoritative confidence. Grant Naylor were always ahead of their time.

Jake Abraham who played the alt-Lister was the lead in a long forgotten 80s sitcom called Help, about three young Scousers being Scouse and on the dole. Ironically, for years I thought it was Craig Charles who was in Help not Abraham! Just looked him up and sadly he passed away only a few weeks ago.

I went to see the filming of the Jack Docherty Show in 1997 because The Cure were performing on it. I met Robert Smith in a pub next door to the Whitehall Theatre.

43:30 Doing specials on the novels would be a great idea. The Naylor and Grant solo books follow from book 2 [better than life] but both go in different directions and don't reference each other. Naylor's book came out first and takes ideas/material from so many episodes allegedly Grant felt he did that out of spite as it gave him much less material to work with!

24:10 I remember an extra called Belinda Lee appearing in two successive episodes of Dad's Army [series 7's Gorilla Warfare and The Godiva Affair] which are her only credits. Amusingly, the roles were polar opposite-A nun one week and as a 'scantily clad' [by 70's pre-watershed standards] lady the next week!

Great episode. Really enjoyed re-living the glory years of Red Dwarf.

Wait, now I'm a little confused. My understanding was the Iliad is about the Siege of Troy which is what is described in the comic book Lister is reading, Odyssey is the second part to the Iliad, it's the journey back from the Siege of Troy. The latinised version of the Odyssey is Ulysses, which is where James Joyce's book takes it's name from.

37:49 Doug Naylor [on the series 7 Red Dwarf documentary] said that the split was brewing for a while but boiled over on 'the 10%'ers' series 1 as Grant insisted on writing episodes solo and after refusing re-writes quit, leaving Naylor to have to write the rest of the series quickly like Richard Herring with 'Time Gentlemen Please' [of course we've not got Grant's side of the story] so it does seem that they fell out personally [Robert Llewellyn said he recalled being at a meeting with Naylor where Grant arrived with lawyers!] although Grant has said it came out of him wanting to do other projects and a lot of the details are still a mystery [apparently even to the Red Dwarf cast!].

I think it's only natural to split after working intensely together for so many years. The problem is when you have something like a successful series holding you together and then it gets acrimonious.

@@britcompod Very true [Red Dwarf 7 was already commissioned-hence the cliffhanger- and Naylor wanted to continue but from what little Grant's said he wanted to call it a day and move on]. Because they were also in a company together, it feels more like a divorce than just a natural parting of the ways.

Back in the day a friend of mine got free tickets to see 'Captain Butler' being filmed, lucky us... the only funny bits were between cast members between takes. The other thing I remember is there was a girl in the audience fake laughing really loudly to the point the stage manager had to tell her to shut up.
