Totally agree! Something to note is that they added some new frame rate options in the last beta. It won't go faster than 6K40 at 17:9 but now has 6K50 at 2:1 which is pretty cool and I assumed they'll keep on adding and eventually improve the quality of the 2K120!

I'm a 11 year RED owner but I've never loved the Komodo footage (I was shocked that in a blind comparison video, I liked BMPCC6K better, assumed that was the Komodo but I was wrong)... but in this video, it's super obvious that the Komodo footage just has a lot more 'weight' to it. It feels more cinematic, better color science.
@GuillaumeCornetfilms

That's a very interesting perspective! I can't tell the difference between the Komodo and the Gemini when side by side if graded properly. But I'm only 3 years in the RED family and haven't much experience with older RED cameras. I do understand that the BMPCC6K can have an amazing look if you know how to use it. I've been blown away by some of the footage I've seen from such a cheap camera. I feel tho that a lot of people don't know how to use it and mess up with it whereas I feel like it would be hard to mess up with the Komodo as the R3D are so good and powerful. Just my personal thoughts :)
@ronineditor9920

@@GuillaumeCornetfilms You're sooooo accurate. Yeah, it really comes down to "who" is using any camera. The issues with Komodo and BMPCC6K are mainly that beginners are using them with no experience and some of the footage looks terrible... but I've seen them in real DP's hands and they look great. Komodo just seems to be lacking something for me. I can't put my finger on it but I'd much rather have a Dragon, for instance. I personally love the Gemini for the 'color buckets' and all that, how organic the color looks. I just wish it was 6K. It's such a weird time... RED came out of nowhere with the RED One and the market was around $90K a camera (mainly CineAlta back then or Varicam). One was 1/3 of the price. But now Black Magic is the disruptor and they have a great reputation with Davinci. It's an amazing time to be in this market. I stick with RED and BM because I love the onboard 'raw' from each. BM just needs more dynamic range. RED always lies about how many stops it has, it's more like 14.5 and BM is accurate around 13.5... they need that extra stop for sure but in Resolve, you can really dig out that color to fake a 14.5 stop look.

Interesting comparison! Don't know if you're looking for feedback or not, but here are my hot takes, if you're interested: 1) It's very well shot. The way the shots are composed is smart, and I think it makes for a solid image comparison. Well done. 2) The Komodo looks astoundingly cinematic, right out of the camera with a LUT. 3) However, even considering the crop, I feel like it's a BIT unfair to compare a 6k capture to 4k. I realize that the Komodo only shoots 4k in prores, but that might be a more fair comparison for the A7SIII. 4) Speaking of codecs, I'm curious why you didn't either a) shoot the Sony in S-Cinetone or b) record it's output raw to an external for a more honest comparison to the raw output of the Red. 5) That AF test really showcases how bizarrely perfect Sony's AF tech is. There was nothing really wrong with the Red, but the Sony never lost it. Uncanny. 6) The Red really sucks for Slo-mo. 7) The Red will have a lot more lens options available...that is pretty nice. 8) The Sony is definitely more flexible. I don't have a horse in the race, since I don't own either of these cameras, but I think for my purposes, the versatility of the Sony would win me over, especially since I could nearly afford 2 of them for the price of one Komodo. While it's undeniable that the image by itself isn't as good out of the box, I think that either with S-Cinetone or even better, with a Ninja for Raw capture, the Sony could come DAMN close at a significantly lower price point, which you could use for outboard rigging, a Ninja, more lenses, etc. Either way, good comparison, thanks! C. PS. I didn't scour the comments so I don't know if you already answered it, but my guess for the phone test is: 1) iPhone, 2) Komodo, 3) Sony

There is quite a lot to talk about indeed. The reason I chose Slog3 instead of cinetone is because I'm way more used to work with slog3. I believe both codecs are pretty good with the Slog3 having an advantage when shooting in bright scenes (highlight more protected and roll off softer) whereas the cinetone apparently performs better in lowlight (less noise) but havent really tested this myself. I also have some really good LUTs for Slog3 that I love using and haven't got the cinetone versions. I wished I had a Ninja for raw capture you are very right. This video was really to show what these cameras could do straight out of the box but a more "fair" comparison would require some accessories on the sony side, maybe for another video? :) Thanks for your feedback!

Nice Video Guillaume We own both the Red Komodo and the Sony A7SIII: What i find: if u need perfect AF, very good ISO Performance in the LOWEST light, good variety of good Optics to choose, if you work more run and gun with fast changing enviroments -->100% take the A7SIII If you have control over the light conditions, have the time set everything up like corporate (interview situations e.g.) if you need 6K, if you need RAW, if you already have premium lenses (very important) because the RED shows Lens weaknesses very fast (we testet it with cheap canon primes (dont do that) get at least something like sigma 18-35 and higher end lenses or cine lenses, if you have the budget to afford the camera, the SSDs, the Storage Workfow (underestimated AF!) If you rely on manual focus because RED AF is trash, if you work as a team with operator and AC (you will need some pretty expensive focus pulling gear) then go for the RED (but only if you have allready squeezed the last bit of your equipment you allready own) In conclusion, it depends on what shooting style is but for the most people the RED isnt the best option

After looking at your footage I’m feeling like the “less video” feel of the Komodo had more to do with the lens/filter combination. It appears that the Komodo footage had way more lens flares and glare. This is often associated with “cinema”. Dynamic range was near indistinguishable between the two. I’ll give the edge to the Komodo for rolling shutter; Though rolling shutter is so well handled on the A7S3, that in all honesty, I’m thinking global shutter presents no actual advantage in practical terms. It’s interesting that you performed no low-light test. But i suppose we already know the Sony will crush the Komodo there. As someone who currently owns the A7S3, FX6 and has a Komodo on order, I find this test very interesting. I think a more even comparison would have been against the FX6... as this is a dedicated cinema camera. The FX6 definitely has a small but perceivable image advantage over the A7S3. This will get really interesting should Sony finally release the rumored WDR firmware update for the FX6.

agreeing on mostly everything you said. I actually had a part filmed where I was talking about how surprised i was on how much the Komodo was flaring which is giving it away in pretty much all my shots. I decided to cut it off because I was not sure of the culprit. The matte-box whole purpose is to prevent from this kind of flare, but this is not the case in my video and the Sony with the PMVND flares less despite not being able to have the lens hood. I will have more videos coming with both cameras and more footage to compare with in different lighting conditions. Global shutter: I have this feeling when watching the Komodo footage that I don't get with the Sony. I give it to the global shutter but maybe it's something else. I still believe it gives a very pleasing look when shooting handheld and in fast paced action shots. Low-light: Very good point, and you're not the first one mentioning it. I wanted to keep this video short and skipped on so many things. I'm thinking about doing another video filming at night with those 2 cameras and throw the Gemini in the mix :)

I find it so strange and frustrating how close these cameras perform yet how much the Komodo continues to make my jaw drop and sony just looks boring... I don't know why but the skin looks organic and the tonality is amazing sony just doesn't impress me compare to Komodo. Anyway, while these tests are amazing to see (Actual real-life direct sunlight) the komodo had much more flare everywhere to the point the blacks look a little lifted which I think skewed my perception and makes the Komodo look a little more visually interesting. Also that WDR firmware was a prank, not confirmed but 19 stops of DR is a total joke, and only being rumored on the FX6 and not the FX9 is crazy stupid, 16-stops is plenty and hard enough to capture.

There are many ways to approach a camera comparison. My goal in this video is to give a practical overview of each camera pretty much right out of the box trying to achieve what I believe being the best result of each from a user perspective. Not from a technical/scientific approach. Because the Komodo is in a "relative" close price range to the S3, a lot of creator/filmmakers (including me) aren't sure wether it's worth or not to allocate that extra few ks for the Komodo. Shooting 4K on the Komodo would be like limiting horse power on a Lambo and comparing it to a Toyota...no point in getting the lambo... Moreover, if I really wanted to get into it, I would need to consider the fact that the 4K of the S3 is actually downsampled from a 8k sensor (48 million pixel-binned down to 12), and compare that to a global shutter S35 6K sensor, way out of my league in terms of knowledge and understanding :)

When it comes to camera sensors. Its like steak for me. I can close my eyes and tell you the quality of steak you give me. from cheap store beef to 44 day-aged wagyu. Normally people struggle to see the difference. Steak is Steak! is their mentality but for me I can easily see the level changes. Red Cameras just look better. if all settings are equal. it just looks better compared to Black Magic or Sony. I thought it was dynamic range or color science or a combination of many things. but im not sure what it narrows down too. it just weighs more. its got more marbling. at the end of the day it just looks better.

I do understand its not a „scientific“ test, but at least bringing saturation and contrast to the same level for both cams wouldnt have been that hard? Now were basically only judging the quality of the used LUT instead of the image potential…the phantom lits are often quite desaturated to emulate „film“ better and as such the komodo comes out much punchier and vibrant here. Like i said, at least normalising sat & contrast would be the absolute minimum imo

You can also download some of the clips shown in the video and play with the colors to make up your mind. Everyone has a different opinion on the footage but the majority of the comments are saying the opposite of what you said so I guess it’s subjective 😉

@@GuillaumeCornetfilms hey, thanks for the reply. I wasnt saying komodo looks bad, it looks absolutely great. Also i have no doubt that from a pure IQ-Standpoint in up to 60fps the komodo should be overall much better (6k red-raw vs. compressed 10bit ofc). I was just pointin out, that the way the footage was corrected MAINLY allows for judging the look of the LUT, not so much of the camera. I would argue, that when equalizing saturation and contrast levels (which is abolutely not the case here) most viewers would have a hard time actually telling them apart. But i agree, that the way you handled the footage, the red looks better. Nowadays we have such great tools. Being able to properly grade propably is more important than the camera used in the future. But the red propably brings excellent results faster. So no argument there. I will try the clips, thanks for pointing that out. But i excpect 6k RED raw to be superior…albeit not by much…

By working 15h days including weekends and doing it full time for years 😉 Of course the Komodo can be used for travelling, I was only saying that the s3 was the perfect travel filmmaker camera as it has the flexibility of being able to take pictures too in just one body but also (and I talk about that in my previous video) the Komodo eats hard drives for breakfast, which can be very tricky when on the go 🤙🏽

Would it be possible to compare them at the same visual focal length, I know the red punches in and gives a crop factor of 1.5. On a 24mm lens this is really closer to a 36mm and this is what really gives the red a more "cinematic" feel right? Tighter shots "feel" cinematic to our eyes because that's the way it's been done in movies. You're closer to the subject and the characters expressions when you punch in. From a viewer's perspective, would having them both at 35mm be a more fair presentation of each camera?
@GuillaumeCornetfilms
2 жыл бұрын
You are right regarding the difference in focal lengths between a Full Frame and a S35. However, saying that a closer up shot is more cinematic? I don't agree. The S35 Komodo sensor has actually less bokeh than the equivalent Sony full frame at F2.8. A 24mm or even wider can have a very cinematic look imo.

Keep in mind that the shot you tagged is nearly at 2x speed as I was filming at 40fps and didn't take time to switch back to 24/25 when he and I started talking. @@380strokerthe jitter is due to lack of weight, cinema cameras are typically rigged out on heavy steadicams with a monitor on etc. The ‘cinematic movement look’ is usually either this or multiple points of contact/shoulder rig so it can wobble without jittering, this combined with good blocking, lighting and dynamic range
