Today we are riding the trails at Millers Pond State Park in Durham, CT. Millers has a reputation for having some of the most technical trails in the state. As you’re about to see that reputation is well deserved. Aside from being a tech-head’s dream, Millers is also pretty simple, having just a handful of premium mountain biking trails. Unlike many of the other trail’s we’ve looked at, Millers doesn’t have a lot of trail braids and for the most part is pretty easy to navigate.
Today we decided to ride what I would consider to be the hardest trail in the park: The red trail, or if you are an old school rider, the boys loop. Political correctness be damned!. To put things in perspective. after being in the woods for just a few minutes we had our first of many mechanical issues. I myself had not one but two flat tires and ended up walking my bike back to the car.
But that’s enough about the boring stuff, let’s take a look at what kind of riding Millers Pond has to offer. The red trail gets serious right out of the chute with rock climb after rock climb. Many riders will hit the practice loop, or girls loop for you old timers, to warm up before doing the red loop.
But the red loop offers way more than just technical climbs. Occasionally the trail gives you a break with some easy, smooth flow. Trail side attractions are all over the place so keep your eyes pealed and get ready to test your skills.
And don’t expect to be grounded the entire time. There are plenty of drops and jumps to send you skyward.
But more than anything else, the red loop is defined by the incredible amount of technical rock gardens that keep coming one after the other. It was incredibly difficult to decide which ones to include in this video because they all are unique, challenging, and fun in their own way. Here is just a small sample of my favorite ones to give you a sense of what to expect.
And we’ll wrap up with the huck / roller that popped my spare inner tube, ending my ride early.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the ride and to you for checking out this video. If you like what you saw I’ve love it if you click subscribe. But now its your turn, get out there and ride!
