I remember buying this in 1973 from Smiths in Darlington. It was friday at 1pm. I took it home and sat and listened to it all day until midnight through my headphones. Fantastic and will never forget that day !

"Single Pigeon"-simple as it it is-is an unforgettable little tune with great brass, and his singing on "Little Lamb Dragonfly" can rip your heart out. Wonderful.

I bought this, along with all the albums up to London Town, when I was in my Macca phase but not long after I moved across and remain predominantly john (obsessive) and George fan. I don’t listen to it much although I don’t dislike it and love tracks like Little Lamb and my love. As a bit of trivia, Henry McCullogh is the Irish voice on Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. Also McCullough turned up for the recording of My Love, with full orchestra on the meter, and told Paul he’d worked out a new lead solo. Fortunately it worked out well! PS. Just popped it on the turntable for its first spin in about 20 years and it’s better than I remembered!

It does grow on you. I was put off for a long time because i remember the radio constantly playing 'My Love' in 73 and the combination of mullet, rose and Motorbike was not exactly enticing. But all these years later -I'm 57-I can overlook its faults and appreciate the melodies, subtle twists and harmonies.

Great vid. I just heard this one for the first time after the 2018 reissue. I have no idea how this album was badly received at the time! From my first listen I love it, One More Kiss and When The Night are favourites along with the classics Big Barn Bed and My Love. Not sure if you've checked out the re-release yet but it's very interesting hearing the unreleased tracks from the planned double album, Hi Hi Hi and Night Out are great! Edit: just seen your 2018 reissue vid!

Red Rose Speedway is a very good album. I think the second side is stronger than side one. The medley on side two is a great boost to this album. I believe the record label on the vinyl LP credits Paul McCartney and Wings as does the 45 rpm single.

I first discovered this album about 10 years ago and rate it highly too though perhaps not as highly as yourself as I don’t care much for My Love or Big Barn Bed and tend to start it, when I play it, with Get on the Right Thing. Totally agree that the medley shouldn’t be compared with Abbey Road and it probably suffers because it’s hard not to. Paul probably should have removed the word ‘medley’ from the song title. Personal favourite is Single Pigeon which is a bit of a masterpiece and one of my top 5 (non-Beatles) Paul tracks.

Howdy John! Your Video's are so devastatingly beautiful.I really think you are very knowledgeable and the presentation is'' Par Excellence. It just so happened that Red Rose Speedway seemed to be my choice for the best Paul McCartney Album ever.I'll give it five stars or a hundred percent rating...... I also like the others Chaos,Venus and Mars,Flaming Pie,Ram, Back to the Egg,Band OTR,Memory Almost Full,McCartney One etc............... but to me, Red Rose is Top of the Line. There are four reasons why I love this record to death: 1.The Album Cover which is so Classy 2.I think it has some Pink Floyd,Alan Parsons Project similarities 3.I hear a heavy influence of Elvis and Little Richard playing the whole LP and 4.The addition of Henry McCullough, an exceptional blues and singer guitarist from Cocker and the Grease Band solidified the cohesive flow of this overlooked Gem. Take Care John, You are the Greatest !

Hello John, just listened for the first time in my life to this complete album, the archive edition. And indeed, it's what I expected (because I did know, of course, My Love, and heard Big Barn Bed on Pure McC): I immediately liked it a lot! Warm, nicely produced, nice melodies and composiitons, similarities with RAM also. Really glad with it! Will play it a lot I know now already :-). On the other hand, I just cannot connect really with Pipes of Peace and also Speed of Sound, yes even Band On The Run is not my favorite, mainly because I just cannot connect with Jet and also the title song is not my favorite, and they're the openingtracks... But Mrs Vandebilt on the other hand is a big favorite! Greetings from the Netherlands (with also a lot of pigeons there, at the coast :-)) Simon Ps Please if you have time and are curious, listen one time at my just uploaded Bridge Over Troubled Water (with Allegria) it's a cell phone recording taken from a concert we just did! I like it a lot! :-)

Hello John, Happy New Year and thank you for all these excellent reviews! Red Rose Speedway is one my favourite McCartney albums along with Ram and Flaming Pie and I think it's his most melodic. I prefer it to Band on the Run, which Paul made to please Rolling Stone and the American radio stations, the problem with Band on the run is that most of the songs on the album could have been composed by other artists and do not sound Mccartneysque at all, the title track, Jet or Helen Wheels could have been sung by the Eagles. Red Rose Speedway on the other hand is pure McCartney, and as you said, long live melody!

+Jean-Baptiste M Thanks Jean-Baptiste, appreciated. I think Band On The Run's problem is over exposure as much as anything. I actually have a special place in my musical heart for Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway. I didn't purchase either of these albums when they came out, I was only 13 years old in 1974, but I do have the My Love 45rpm single which I purchased at the time of its release. You like this album a bit better than me, but your point that it is underrated and overlooked is well taken. You mentioned that it was almost a double album and I actually have the MP3 version of what the double album would have sounded like, how accurate it is, I don't know. But I actually think it works better as a double album, the song selection seems to make more sense and it has a different flow. But I'm a Macca fan and I don't think I ever can get too much of Paul is his prime. If you have never heard the double album version contact me if your interested.

Red Rose Speedway is tied as my favourite Wings album along with Band on the Run. I think all of the Wings albums are excellent and am astonished that a lot of the band’s output is still so underrated. This is such a warm and entertaining album with Little Lamb Dragonfly being the absolute highlight for me. I always feel like it sounds like George in the first half of the song and feels lyrically like a letter to both George and John.

Hello, John and a Happy New Year to you! I mostly agree with your sentiments on Red Rose Speedway, but I do have a soft spot for Get On The Right Thing more than I do for most of the medley which ends the album. Little Lamb Dragonfly would be in my top ten of Paul's best post- Beatle songs, it's as you say beguiling and a gem. Also like you I tend to play RRS more than the overplayed and overpraised Band On The Run, but I play most Wings albums more than Band On The Run these days. RRS isn't Paul's strongest albums lyrically, but melodically it's one of his best albums.

I like the non albums songs like C Moon or Little Woman Love. After having listened to it in it’s intended Double LP version, I can say with confidence that it’s probably Paul’s magnum opus. Single Pigeon and When the Night are a great listen back to back, the Medley is amazing, probably better than the Abbey Road Medley. Just a great album.

Just a superb review, John.... I feel the same way as you, - in the comments of Rockboy680's McCartney ranking video, a while back, I had "Red Rose Speedway" #1 on my personal top ten.. Nothing recreates the breezy, carefree feeling of adolescent summers for me, like this album. The key word that you used is innocence, and I agree with what you said about Paul's first four albums vs his later seventies records... I am actually quite fond of the lyrics on "Little Lamb Dragonfly", I think that it's a quite touching song about the death of innocent lamb on his farm in Scotland, even though it loses it's focus as it progresses, it keeps things from getting too heavy handed... I think that you summed up RRS well when you said not recommended for non McCartney fans, but a 9.5 rating is right on the mark, - for me, anyway..

Hi John, seems you have been reviewing albums of late that I have a lot of joyous memories about! I remember riding home from the local record shop on my bicycle at the age of 14 (1 year after it's release) & really looking forward to hear it for the first time. On the way home, I fell off my bicycle, but thankfully saved the album which I still have. I have the same subjective views on the album as you. In particular, how many artists could deliver in one year (1973), material like this including Live & let die as well as Band on the Run? My obvious answer is obvious...Red Rose Speedway is still great to listen to. Paul may have been 're-finding' his feet at this time, but WOW! I wish I had 10% of the melodic & instrumental ability he displayed during this period. I can also hear in this record, his frustration at really trying to get people to understand that he wasn't perfect as people seemed to expect of him. Or for that matter, how he just followed 'his nose' & still got out there & gave it a go - with all the crap he was dealing with at the time. What a work ethic!Anyway, I'm rambling.Really like your reviews John. May I suggest you do a re-review on Revolver too? Thanks,Gaz (Melbourne/Australia)

Suzy and the Red Stripes is scribbled on one of the photos inside. It's a favorite track for me and would have played well on this very strong album. I like the Ram - Speedway - Band On the Run trio. They stand well together. I've always heard them as the 'family album set'. Little Lamb Dragonfly and the medley work well for me. They are obviously variations on the same concept as Abbey Road and RAM medleys. As far as what would later be dubbed 'Silly Love Songs'? I love every one of them! Sonically, My Love is worth the effort just for that.

Presume the ram leftovers weren’t re-recorded with the new band members as the versions were so good already. It’s a fantastic McCartney album, which I rate higher than band on the run. So much Macca magic dust all over the album and at a period when wings were really taking off. Hi hi hi : c moon my love. The mess was a classic. Maybe the album could have been a real milestone if given the George Martin Pepper treatment. I love the sound of the album. Crisp, clean, polished, well defined. Strange that Macca constrained mcculloch, then let his subsequent guitarists loose. I love that so many fairly undiscovered songs which adds to Macca’s elusive quality

I actually prefer ''Red Rose Speedway'' over ''Band On The Run''...that might be because ''Band On The Run'' has been overplayed in my life. I look at ''Red Rose Speedway'' as a bit more experimental than ''Band On The Run''. I see more of a thread between ''Ram'' and ''Red Rose Speedway''..In fact the ''Who's that coming around the corner...'' can be heard at the end of the ''Ram On'' reprise. Great album. ''Ram'' is my favorite Macca album, but damn, what a great run of albums through the 1970's.

Just came across this review. Again, another nice review John. I've always felt this was an ok album. Never quite understood or liked the album title or cover. A bit odd. Quite a few good tracks. "My Love" great. Always liked the melody ending with one of my favorites "Power Cut". "The Mess" and "Country Dreamer" would have fit nicely on this album along with maybe "Hey Diddle" or "Momma's Little Girl". Speaking about the crediting of the album to Paul McCartney and WIngs, my original copy only has a blue sticker in the upper right hand corner that lists the songs and credits the album to McCartney and Wings.

Hi John. Reviewing some old reviews as I was finally able to afford his 'Deluxe Edition'. I have very fond memories of this album. When I was 13 years old (1974), I was really starting to back track on so many Beatle solo albums. I rode my pushbike 8 miles to a record shop hoping that they had one. Sure enough, they did. I then rode my bike back carefully holding the album in a paper bag back home. But halfway home, I hit a bump & went over the handlebars on my pushbike. Somehow, I held the record & it wasn't damaged. (I still have it). When I got home, & placed it on my tiny portable record player..... I was so excited hearing new songs that I had never heard before. So great. I still luv this album. GAZ (Melbourne/Australia)

I enjoyed your review, John.. but I just wish I could like the album as a whole more than I do. Your friend Dave's input is right on, I think, in as far as Paul starting to be getting on his way. I have always said that "My Love" in a classic, and as good as his best Beatles ballads. Nicely worded assessment from you of "Big Barn Bed" in here, by the way - my favorite track after "My Love". Oh well, it sounds like I am still the lone person in the world who doesn't care for "Little Lamb Dragonfly"... I think how you feel about his albums has a lot to do with what age you are. I was a kid when the Beatles broke up, and I LOVE Paul's early post-Beatles work. McCartney albums were the first albums I bought, and I thought (and still think) the music was great. Not having been influenced too much by the Beatles' work and not listening with anger or disappointment over their split lets you appreciate the songs for what they are. Many people (especially music critics, it seemed) blamed Paul for the Beatles' breakup at the time. Of course we now know he was the one struggling to keep the band together. I think if people knew that back then, they would have heard his music completely differently. He did some tremendous work while suffering from deep depression over the split, and it seems even today he himself thinks less of his early songs because of the anger of the critics at the time. A shame.

Hi a very interesting review, personally I love this album I bought it when first released and like you I love listening to it to confess I am a huge McCartney fan and have a lot of his music I appreciate he's not everyone's favourite ex beatle but we're all entitled to our opinions I also have n original all things must pass which on the whole is good but there is also some tosh recorded on that album but hey ho I will never part with it. Looking forward to our other reviews now. Many thanks for posting these and my respect for you opinion.. merry Christmas everyone. :)🌲

Hi John My interest in everything McCartney is quite recent. Nowadays the easy availability of albums to hear has allowed me to to play his material again and again and now I actually buy them, so much for streaming music stopping music sales.I try an album out on You Tube and Spotify and then when I am sure I then part with my cash ! My wife's sister was a big fan of all things Beatles/solo work in the mid eighties with all the Wings/McCartney LP's but I just didn't find him 'cool' if I'm honest. I had a further listen to them in the nineties and found most of the albums awful and not to my liking except for the big singles. The condition she kept them in was shameful they clicked and clacked and for a person who couldn't cope with a creased cover I was onto a hiding to nothing. I have however changed and seen the light, it was wonderful to have the blinkers taken off largely having been intrigued by these reviews of yours and the ranking of albums etc in the VC. RRS was impenetrable originally but I am happy to say it it is now in my top 5. My favourite albums are often the ones that have alluded me for years! The cover is fabulous too, I love the way Paul writes about everything and anything, something I have grown to love across his albums. I am still struggling with some material but I guess that's inevitable really. Thanks for your reviews they are very entertaining and illuminating.

Sam Sloane thanks Sam...it’s funny how this record seems to have fallen out of favourite (compared to say Ram for example)...hope that’s only temporary!

Always liked this album. My Love may be my least favorite track. Good melody throughout. One More Kiss, the medley on side 2 are my favorites. Like Big Barn Bed.

Tony Laughlin yes very underrated...by Paul too it seems...he should ignore the critics!

He should ignore the critics. It would be great for him to cherry pick songs from all of his 70's work that he doesn't do live and add to his set list. Thanks for your reviews, enjoy listening

This is an absolute lost classic. Little lamb dragon fly is his best song and that includes the Beatles years!!

Not one of my favorites, but not as bad as some say.

I like the album. In fact I think his first 5 albums, McCartney up to Band On The Run, are his best. Flaming Pie, Chaos, Memory, New and Egypt are very good albums as well. I think Venus And Mars and At The Speed Of Sound are more than average. The live album WOA is a good one as well.

Meant to say John, during your very good review, your hands look very "uncomfortable" with nothing to do, just an observation!

Give him a break, just because he isn't all excitable doesn't mean he lacks emotion. I like his relaxed, eloquent style, it is very engaging.

Much prefer him to usual over the top presenters(usually Americans) with loud background music

A dismiss-able and forgetable album. Paul.........was just not hitting the ball......... A rock star singing "My Love".......Whatever....I hope Linda-lou liked it........Buy it used if you can.

You're right john, a lot of people are pretty hard with a song like My Love but who can boast of writing such pretty melodies as Paul? Few people ... He knows how to do it with great talent And forgive my poor English but I' am french and learn it in school a long time ago
