I’m Jonah with Magnanimous Media, and this is the RED SCARLET X. The SCARLET X is equipped with the 14-megapixel Mysterium X sensor, which delivers 5,120 horizontal and 2,700 vertical pixels. The Mysterium X sensor utilizes the bear pattern, which has 2,560 green photo sites per line, and 2,560 red or blue photo sites on alternating lines. The SCARLET is equipped with an HD, SDI, and HDMI output, as well as a sync, gig-E, and two audio inputs.
With an already-impressive 13.5 stops of dynamic range, the SCARLET X also has the HDRx function, which can help deliver up to 18 stops of dynamic range. Utilizing unique shutters, the HRDx function streams to two simultaneous tracks: an A-track that exposes normally, and an X-track that can provide up to 6 stops of protection in the highlights. Special workflow is required, and the function reduces available frame rates by half.
Because of the SCARLET X’s resolution and depth of field equivalent to a Super 35, it’s an ideal solution for cinema. Whether you’re projecting onto a large screen or printing to film, that high resolution is going to give you a really crisp image. In addition to that, the RAW workflow is going to allow you to really fine-tune the image and get it exactly the way you want it. Another solution that the RED ONE became popular for is still photography, and that is because it allows photographers to interact with their subject in a different way, without clicking a shutter, and they still have access to a fairly high resolution and that RAW workflow that allows them to really fine-tune the image.
You’ll start assembly by placing the monitor on the mounting point. Place the 3/8 bolts and thread them in hand-tight. Then, use the Allen wrench to secure them. A 1/8 turn past snug will suffice; do not over-torque. Connect the monitor cable first to the EDF/LCD port on the front of the camera, and then to the monitor. Line the cable up with the groove in the port, and gently push into place. Next, insert the battery by pressing the battery eject button on the top of the hand grip. Then insert the battery with the contact points facing up and in. Insert the battery firmly until it clicks into place; then close the battery door. You’ll notice that the power light will turn red once the battery is in place.
To attach the lens, rotate the lock ring counter-clockwise; then depress the less release button and rotate the cover counter-clockwise until it releases. Line the lens up and rotate it into place. Then, rotate the lock ring until it is tight. Insert the memory card with the white arrows and red logo facing out, and gently push into place. Briefly press the power button to power the camera up. It will take several seconds to come online. The monitor will power up, and the camera will be fully-functional once both the power and record light turn green.
The main display will give you access to frame rate, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, resolution, and compression ratio. The wheel and button controls on the hand grip can be used to access options on the menu, which can also be viewed on the hand grip display. The touch screen is used by simply touching and dragging to select options. You will notice that changing resolution crops the sensor and changes the frame rates that are available. To select your time base, press the menu icon, select settings, project, and time base. Audio levels are accessible through the settings, project, and audio input path. To format your media, go to the settings and media tab. Select SSD for the RED cards provided, and press format media. Give the card the desired settings for your new reel, and select format media. You will need to unmount media before removing it from the camera in order to be sure that all shots and metadata stay intact on the media.
If you are using an external monitor or recorder, you will need to active the outputs by going to settings, audio/video, and monitor control. Some settings require that the camera be restarted to activate. The HDRx feature can be accessed through the HDR option on the menu. Once activated, you will need to select the number of stops of protection to be applied to the X-track. Up to six stops of protection can be applied.
