As a Yankee fan, my heartfelt condolences to Wakefield's wife (who's additionally struggling with pancreatic cancer), children, and New England fans over the loss of one the most respected players ever to grace the mound in Fenway Park. I admired his iconic performance skills throughout his tenure with the Boston Red Sox, and there wasn't (if any) a knuckleball starter who could have more motivation and aptitude than Tim. Boston has lost not only an esteemed baseball phenom but a beloved philanthropic. Wakefield was well known throughout Major League Baseball as one of its most charitable players, especially in children's organizations and supporting fundraising events. A despairing day for Major League Baseball today. Rest in peace, Tim Wakefield. You will be sorely missed.

As a 40 year old man, lifelong Red Sox fan, and avid hater of the Yankees, I think guys like Wakefield, Jeter, Varitek, some guys just end up meaning MORE than just a rivalry. You end up CARING about a few, even if you've never met. Wakes one of those guys. For me, it's Wake, it's Varitek, it's Pedroia, it's Francona, it's Papi. Anyone else, just guys. But those few are so core to my memories n some of the happiest moments baseball has ever given me As a fan, to you, THANK YOU for putting away the rivalry n all it's bluster, for something far more important n far bigger than a game. Sox Nation is HURTING.Thank you for being genuine

As a NY Yankees fan, I am saddened to hear about Tim Wakefield's passing. As the narrator stated in the video, Wakefield always thought of his team first. My fondest memories of Tim were when the Yankees were winning game 3 during the 2004 ALCS and Tim was more than willing to sacrifice his game 4 start to work in relief in that game. I've always respected Tim as a pitcher, but from that moment, my admiration for him went through the roof. I never forgot that moment and looked at Tim as a hero. I believe that moment helped the Red Sox make the impossible happen when the Red Sox beat the Yankees in that amazing ALCS. I will say a prayer for Tim, for the Red Sox and for their fans that loved him very much.

I wanted to add a comment here but, as I started to write, I started to cry. Tim Wakefield has been a particular hero of mine for a very long time. I was not fortunate enough to have known him personally but it feels like a did. This hit very hard. I pray for his friends and family and hope his beautiful wife will come through her own illness and be with us for many years to come. I had my own cancer battle and am looking forward to that five year mark next spring. God willing, it can be done, Stacey. Tim Wakefield had a kindness and grace that is very rare these days. He was not just an outstanding athlete...he was...but he was so much more. Whenever people were in need, he would be the first to step forward and say "how can I help?". Tim Wakefield was absolutely selfless in how he gave of himself to make a better world for others. In his work with the Red Sox Foundation, he tirelessly strove to improve the lives of so many...year after year. Thanks to all the Yankee, Philly, Cleveland and other fans who here in the comments have recognized and paid tribute to Tim and his legacy. This clearly transcends baseball rivalries and you have all been very gracious with your kind words and condolences. Rest in peace, Tim. You will not be forgotten.

In 2004, Wakefield gave up his own scheduled Game 4 start to save the bullpen in the Game 3 shellacking by NY at Fenway. He later pitched 3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Game 5 to secure that second important win. People remember Dave Robert's steal, Ortiz's walkoffs, Schilling's bloody sock, and Damon's grand slam. But Wakefield's selfless act and great performance in Game 5 helped turn the tide of that ALCS. RIP Wake #49

I cannot believe Tim Wakefield has passed away. I am not a big sports fan, but my father and brother are both very big baseball fans, and as Mainers, we absolutely support the Boston Red Sox. Even without being a dedicated sports fan, Tim Wakefield was absolutely a household name in our house. My brother was lucky enough to be in Fenway during the opening roud of the World Series in 2004 with Wakefield on the mound. Even in the tiny phone picture from my brother's 2004 flip phone (or maybe it was one of those old Kodak disposable cameras) the man on the mound was instantly recognizable as Tim Wakefield. If you asked me to name a man who personified teamwork, it would be Wakefield hands down. The fact that Wakefield knew he wasn't a super star, but that there was always a role for him to play, and that he would willingly play that role as hard as he could for endless years is what earned him super stardom. For some guys it's an explosive bat. For some guys it's outrageous natural skills. For some, it's a bravado and charisma. For Tim Wakefield, his special skill was to do whatever the team needed from him at all times. If it could be done by Tim Wakefield, he was ready and willing to get out there and do it. The world needs more Tim Wakefields.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, there are few players I remember more than Tim Wakefield. Sure there were many more talented, but few embodied the idea of "teammate" more than him. I didn't know him obviously, but the memories he provided, especially during the run to the World Series in 2004, were unforgettable. It seems that some of the best human beings die so young, and it's sad to see yet another one leave the Earth far too early. Having lost a parent, I can only imagine how this family is feeling. I hope that over time they find more and more peace in knowing how great of a man he was. Sad day for baseball.

He was not only a great legend of baseball, he was an excellent “person” too. I was only a cleaner for his home, short years ago and had the opportunity to met him and his family, his beautiful wife and very polite two children, I couldn’t believe a rich, successful and famous person,, how could be so humble and polite EVEN with the simple cleaners of homes, but … it was Mr Wakefield; a polite, humble gentleman with a huge heart. I never forgot him because one time he saved me calling his personal taxi-driver during a terrible emergency I had with my daughter at my home during hours I was cleaning Wakefield home, I asked the favor to him because I didn’t have a car and his beautiful home (over a bank of river) was very far from any kind of transportation and my boss didn’t accept to do the favor for me till we finish to clean the house, so I begged Mr Weakfield to do the huge favor to drive me to my home immediately to help my daughter and he didn’t hesitate to call his driver, in short minutes it was at his door and drove to my home to safe my daughter, the driver didn’t accept any money because he said Mr Wakefield was paid already. I never will forget it and forever thankful to him. It hurts to know how the best persons died so soon. RIP Mr Tim Wakefield, God bless his wife and children 🙏🏻Every single person in his home left a very good impression in my life. Thank you Mr Wakefield 🙏🏻 for all the great things you made in this world

Just remember Tim was also an All-Star in 2009, and allowed himself to be beaten on to the tune of 5 earned runs during game 3 of the 2004 ALCS just to spare the bullpen on the off chance Boston would pull off 4 wins in a row. He should have an award for team leadership named after him.
