I know over hunting, habitat loss, pesticides etc contributed to the decimation of quail. I also believe that hawks years ago kept down rat numbers enough to protect the quail. The number of field rats that one hawk removed more than made up for the relatively smaller number of quail that they eat. Huge numbers of rats are likely to find quail eggs and adult quail can not stop a rat from devouring a quails eggs. When I was a boy , I’m 73 now, we always saw hawks when hunting. At age 25, it was rare to see a hawk. Now once again hawks are back. I’m sure the ddt was the major cause of fewer quail, but loss of rat predation was also a factor. Don’t shoot hawks!

Way to go, Hawk. Get those nasty rats. I have 62 acres in very rural northwest Arkansas and live down in a beautiful hollow on that land in a house that has two Bald Eagle nests above it that are high up in Sycamore trees quite close to the house. So I see the occupying Bald Eagles on a regular basis. They are so beautiful. One night as I was coming down the private road into the hollow to my house, I came upon one of the huge Eagles in my front yard area. My headlights were right on the Eagle and it had just caught a brown and white rabbit and was beginning to tear into that rabbit. The Eagle repeatedly tugged at the rabbit until it wasn't moving anymore and was fluttering its huge wings as it did so. Poor rabbit. Seeing those HUGE wings up close like that was incredible. The Eagle wasn't disturbed by my headlights and just kept on doing what it was doing. It was a bit disturbing to watch, but quite majestic, too. Because, hey, Bald Eagles and their chicks gotta eat. It was a fat rabbit, too, so that was quite a meal for the Eagle and its chicks. I just sat there in my car watching the Eagle making bite-sized pieces out of the rabbit and then suddenly realized just how huge that Eagle is and how huge its talons are. I then also realized that if I was outside the car and the Eagle felt threatened by me that it could do some SERIOUS damage to me or to anyone else who happened by it at any time. I have seen videos of Eagles and other raptor birds catching and tearing into rodents and other animals, but seeing one up close and personal doing that to a rabbit gave me a whole new respect for just how powerful and deadly they are. Realizing that they could do serious damage to a person by seeing it up close made me know that they could do that but don't because I've never heard of even one of them attacking a human. So we're lucky that they don't and won't. I know that if someone stupid decided to corner one somehow that it would definitely be able to very adequately defend itself and would probably come out the winner and the human would come out seriously injured or maybe even dead. Raptors are quite beautiful and majestic and I feel quite blessed to have property that these Bald Eagles reside on. Hearing them call out and watching them soar around above the property is so incredible.

Birds, as we all know them today; their lineage is linked to the great two-legged dinosaurs of the Crustacean period known as the therapod. As this hawk turned to face foward, it brought to mind a photo I once saw at a museum of the most well-known therapod, the great Tyrannosaurus rex.

Nice vid I have one tagging a wild rabbit in the back yard in north phoenix, that was a good luck shot to have him stick around, he wasn’t camera shy for sure 👍 good job

Had a similar experience maybe 20 feet away from me, but the hawk was larger and caught a dove. The hawk almost looked surprised that it worked. There was a second dove right next to it that flew up on a tree branch a few feet away utterly stunned. The hawk's behavior was similar, just sat there snuffing the life out of the dove, then flew off with the carcass. I walked back by the tree a few minutes later and the 2nd dove was still there looking like it had no clue what to do next.

I've seen them hit a dove in mid flight. Coolest thing to see. It hit the dove so fast and hard it left a trail of feathers in the air slowly drifting to the ground.
