I get it's rhetorical, but the reason is timing when the first three episodes came out, the Chorus trilogy was finishing, so there was a ton of attention on anything rvb related hence why the new animated editions of rvb aren't doing nearly as well as the first three maybe if he uploads an entire compilation of everything he'll have made by the time Restoration comes out, it'll get better traction

This looks really good, but I cant help but feel like the models look kinda stiff. It doesn't feel like the animation is adding much to the original experience other than a visual update, since they're standing around with about as much expression/emotion as the CE models in the original. A little more expressiveness could really enhance what you are doing here, if you wanted. Either way, its cool to be able to watch rvb with a more appealing style. keep it up
@IrrelevantNonFilms
Жыл бұрын
You raise a valid criticism that I'm perhaps not doing as much with the medium as I could be doing. Honestly, not adding much to the experience was more or less the point of doing these animations originally. Very early on I decided to be more reserved with the physical performances because I felt overacting was a very easy trap to fall into that took away from the charm of the originals. It's why I have everyone holding guns all the time and only occasionally emoting with a free arm, because the dialogue was written around not being able to do any kind of gesturing or body language beyond "aiming gun" and "punching", so trying to forcibly add that kind of body language where there is no obvious "Oh, well of course that's how they'd emote while saying that" moment rarely looks very good in my eyes. Honestly the idea of doing the Halo 2 era episodes is terrifying because of how much they started to become aware of their limitations and work around them in amusing ways, the shots and dialogue pacing is practically dependent on the video gamey movements. (Plus they started to get into 8-10 minute long episodes, and given how long it takes me just to do 4 minutes...)

@@IrrelevantNonFilms Thanks for responding, I totally get what you mean about potential overacting, though part of me wonders if that might add to the charm/compliment its already present silliness. If you are worried about that you could try smaller movements that dont impact the scene as much. EX: Have dougnut duck as he gets sniped at. Have tucker shake his head slowly after church beefs all his shots to visually convey his disapointment. Make church flick his gun from tucker to the tele then back to tucker as he forces him though. (I noticed you did this with his head, which is a nice touch but I feel like it could be more noticeable). Have Church and Caboose hold their hands over their visors as if trying to block the sun, and move their heads as if they're trying to look past someone in a busy crowd so it looks like they're looking for Tucker. You really dont need to worry so much about their movements feeling cartoonish since it pretty much is a cartoon. I do get the "Not adding much was the point" angle though. I wont pretend to understand how much work or time goes into this, or even how exactly you are animating this. (In my head I'm imagining its mo-cap? I dont at all understand animation). Not every creative project has to try to reinvent the wheel. I just felt compelled to offer my critique since I always look for how things can be improved in my own work, and tend to offer advice when I shouldn't because of my inability to clearly describe my ideas. If it isnt that much work, you should to a little experimenting, and maybe eventually you could try some scenes with guns holstered(when appropriate in context). Could be fun just messing around and seeing what you can do. Thanks again for responding, I spent awhile just staring at the reply button because I was worried that I would come off as rude or discredit the work you've already put in. Like you said, I noticed that more could be done with the medium and got excited by the possibilities. Honestly saying you could be doing more with the medium is almost word for word what I wanted to say, but I was too nervous to say it directly lol, because again I dont wanna discredit the work youve already done as not good enough. Anyways, love the content and I hope to see more.

@@thathandsometryhard8605 I do hear your feedback, and I appreciate the amount of thought that went into offering suggestions and examples! Buuuut, I'd just like to make some excuses for myself real quick - mostly to attempt to better convey my thought process rather then to just shoot down ideas, something I definitely don't want to do. - Donut ducking was actually something I did try to do, but I don't know if it's just the proportions of the spartan models throwing off the mocap or the fact that I move like a weirdo, but it didn't end up looking right (Especially on the angled terrain) so I had to settle for just turning around. - The vibe I was going for with Tucker was that he was giving Church the silent stink eye. Perhaps I should've animated more neck tilt to convey that. - I think I actually did originally mocap Church flicking his gun, but It ended up lost in the "smoothing pass" where I clean up all the shakiness from the mocap data. It's something that he did in the original episode, so I'm certain I thought about it at least once. - I'm pretty sure that the Mark V helmet already has a very prominent design feature for the purpose of blocking the sun :) (Kidding, of course) - Honestly I thought them standing silently waiting for Tucker to come out the other side added to the joke. Neither option is inherently more correct then the other, of course, but as I mentioned before, I'm mostly hoping to just elaborate on sort of the way I think about these performances. Plus, there *are* some other RvB remake animations that add a lot more movement and gestures to check out, I've been wondering if it would be too arrogant of me to shout them out in my own videos, as if they don't already have more viewers then me. Oh and also to more elaborate on your question, the vast majority of it is mocap using a VR headset and body trackers. I don't own a chest strap, so I physically have to hold one tracker against my body using an arm - which is why characters only move one arm at a time 90% of the time. Some of the shots are hand-animated, mostly the ones that aren't standing and talking. Any time someone is running more then the 12 feet of space I have in my apartment, I'm using a run cycle (which has been very poorly retargeted from the Halo CE rig to the Halo Infinite model, resulting in some janky butt jiggle, but it's fiiiiiine). Shots that were animated by hand include Donut's "taunting", church jumping down from the base (which is why he falls so slowly), Church unloading the sniper (But only his arms, the body and head is mocap), and Church from 0:41 to 1:00 is hand animated, while Tucker and Caboose are mocapped.
