This country is slowly committing suicide. Our shipbuilding has gone, our car building industry, what is left of it is owned by foreigners. Teeside, one time famous for its chemical industry is a pale shadow of what it was with the demise of ICI. We appear to no longer build our own aircraft. Despite the overwhelming expertise and innovation in electronics, companies are being snatched up by foreigners. Now we watch with despair at the eradication of our steel industry. The UK government has totally lost its way in protecting our assets whilst the Chinese and Indians throttle the life out of us.

Thatcher started the demise of the Industry in this country just to prove a point to the unions when she had the coal mines closed and then the shipyards. Then came Cameron to finish the job. When people of the Middlesbrough/Redcar area petitioned him to help save the Teesside steel works he said unfortunately there isn't the money to do that and in the very same week he signed a contract to import steel from China - The loss of the Shipyards, Steel and ICI Chemical plant had a huge impact on Teesside and the people who worked in these industries. Teesside has declined since then and Tories did absolutely nothing to help the people who lost their lively hoods. Labour were no different as far as I can tell. It is a crying shame what has happened to Teesside and other parts of the Country such as Wales - Liverpool - Sheffield and many other Northern areas, all left with more or less nothing while the South prospered creating a bigger divide than ever before between North & South - Disgraceful.

Yes, in living memory the steelworks used to stretch from Cargo Fleet to the coast. It’s hard to imagine just how vast it all was, and a train journey from Redcar to Middlesbrough was an adventure as you past through Dorman Long if not a smelly one. My Grandad worked all his life at Smith Dock and we watched the last ship get launched together. The demise of employment in the mid eighties forced me to work away from the area.

And same as the last piece of steel goes to the recycler and the ground is sown with grass, so too will the blueprints, the cad files, the hard drives full of engineering documents go into the shredder... and this life-blood factory will have only existed in memories and historical footage. Once the engineers who designed and built this have all died... who will rise to the occasion to build anew??? The chinese???? Such a shame that britain has chosen to follow the roman empire.
