In this video, Emily Talen proposes a framework for how urban planners might think about neighborhoods and use them more productively. Neighborhoods are often defined by arbitrary lines on a map, lacking real meaning or power. The neighborhoods planners should aspire to create, however, need three things: identity, connection, and a collective voice.
This video is an excerpt from the "Defining Neighborhoods" course on Planetizen Courses. The course reviews the varying definitions of neighborhoods and examines methods for defining a physical basis and tangible meaning to neighborhoods based on the location of neighborhood centers, boundaries, and spatial extents.
