I really liked Drakensang. It was different than any other rpg I'd played; completely different rule set. It had its problems and I found it difficult, but I really enjoyed my time with it. And Arx Fatalis, what can you say. A real early masterpiece.
@garnauklaufen6704

It's based on the pen & paper RPG "The Dark Eye", which is the biggest RPG from Germany. Drakensangs art direction is inspired by romantic art (especially Caspar David Friedrich), which seems to combine nicely with the setting and makes for a fairly unique atmosphere. Also, the music is done by the same composer who also made the soundtrack from Spellforce, both soundtracks are really good.

Arx Fatalis originally was planned as Ultima Underworld 3, but EA denied the license to the arcane studios so they moved it into its own universe, but the similarities to the Underworlds can be found left and right! Imho EAs biggest gaming sin, to simply let Ultima die as franchise, it had the possibility to become as big as Elder Scrolls but EAs beancounters really f*** it up!

Nice to see Ghost of a tale here, one of the few RPG where combat is not an option and you're supposed to stealth or bluff you way through guards. Also exploration is about finding every nook and cranny of a modestly sized area that you will know like the back of your hand by the end, instead of the usual giant open world where maybe 5% has something other then scenery. Which can be good or bad depending on your tastes I suppose.

I played Venetica back in the day, a great story and amazings graphics and action game play for its time period. It wasn't completely linear either and it DID have two endings. Granted, most of the plot is fairly linear and the conversations in which you can pick different answers that express more selfless benign or powerhungry brutal intentions seem to be mostly for fluff, but they do have impact on the ending and you can also join two dfferent factions, which does change quite a bit in the mid game. In the end, you confront your evil half-brother who ursurped death's powers to rule over Venice as a tyrant and get the "we aren't so different" villain speach from him, in which he lists the more questionable things you did in the game and the number of people you killed to get to him (depending on your actual playthrough, which I totally didn't expect in that kind of game). After you defeat him, you look at his throne pensively for a moment - and then either pass by it and walk away or sit down on it and take his place, dpending on how you behaved during your playthrough.

I played through Jason Rise of the Argonauts earlier this year, it was a fairly entertaining, if standard experience. It's very linear, but truthfully sometimes that's nice. With so many open world games these days, it's nice to just go back to a game you can play straight from start to finish, enjoy the story and characters, and not have to stress too much about potentially missing collectibles or quests. Worth a playthrough if you're into these sort of games.

@@burningsheep4473Subjective, of course it is. I liked the enviroments in both games... there are some lovely settings, and the style and graphics are adorable (and have aged quite well). Personally, I liked the story in the second one so much more. It was just a classic RPG adventure, while I found the disconnect between the setup and the "main quest" in the first one very jarring. From the ones listed here that I have played: Arx Fatalis is amazing, even by modern standards. Played it recently, for the first time, and while it did have 1-2 hiccups, it is great. Enclave is equally fantastic, but with no flaws to it. It's a more arcade experience though. Both are dirt-cheap on Kinguin, for anyone interested. Hunted Demon's Forge is basically Gears of War with a hot elf and a hot ghost-lady. It's fine, just don't expect to be blown away. Faery Legends of Avalon is a turn-based RPG. The really cool part (apart from the 360 movement of the flying fairies) is how much you can customize your fairy with various insect parts, through the gear you gather. You start with the typical girly fantasy fairy with the butterfly wings and end up with an insect Frankenstein's monster. Other than that though, it's pretty indifferent. LOTR War in the North: I forgot I had even played that until I saw it on my steal library.

A few others of note: Two Worlds: Short, linear main questline with tons of side quests and exploration. Merge-based equipment upgrading along with Diablo-like gems, as well as foraging and alchemy. Geneforge: OS CRPG where you create monsters to fight by your side. Your decisions change how you are seen, and will change the ending depending on the faction you most align with. Cythera: Summoned by the king (like Ultima), you never fully know if he is good or sane, as the entire population is suffering from a mind altering pandemic, and your guide might be just as crazy. Tons... I mean absolute TONS of spells, and a fair amount of NPCs you can recruit to follow you that you can only hire once it's revealed within their dialog. All followers have different skills, and depending on which ones you've chosen, have different banter between them. An assassin and a guard, for instance... is a tenuous relationship at best... There's also a DOS RPG based inventory system, and all the GUIs are in movable windows.

Grimrock II is the best RPG game ever made. It is not forgotten by any means. Rune, Enclave, Hunted and Cursed Crusade - are pure action-slasher games, not an RPG. Especially Rune, it's a very basic, pure traditional hack-n-slash. (not saying it's a bad thing) Hunted is more like oldschool Golden Axe, - only darker, 3D and with a megaton of secrets. Enclave is a very pretty (for its time and beyond) hack-n-slash that requires some strategy. Cursed Crusade - is a hack-n-slash with a gimmick that was popular around the ~mid 2000s and is built around a blade-ballet choreographic eye candy and crusaders-knights-Templars theme. If that appeals to you, then this is best game available with such theme. Provided, you like hack-n-slash. Cause that's exactly what this game is. The RPG statement is a lie. It is very similar to 2004 "Conan", - only prettier, more advanced and with European knights. Knights of the Temple II - was indeed an RPG game, and a pretty damn good one at that (sans the ending). The first part of it, just like "The Last Templar" and Cursed Crusade - are purely hack-n-slash games.

If we're going for games by Spiders Studio ("Bound by Flame" and "Faery: Legends of Avalon" that you mentioned), I'd also highly recommend "Technomancer" and "Mars: War Logs". They're all admittedly a bit rough around the edges, but I really enjoyed the post apocalyptic setting, mature story and characters in both of them, and as a bonus, they both happen in the same world and their stories happen in parallel to each other. Of course, perhaps the best and most polished game by Spiders thus far is "Greedfall" and gladly not yet forgotten. And if we're going for games like "The Cursed Crusade", I'd also recommend "The First Templar". A very similar setting happening during the crusades and about the fall of the Knights Templar order. Similar style skill progression where we spend exp points to learn new skills and get stronger.
@HexenStar
9 ай бұрын
The two Templar games are not similar. They only have a bare minimum of common traits. Namely - the genre, the theme and the two-player shtick. Other than that, The Cursed Crusade is a far, far more advanced game in every respect. But what stands out the most - is art direction and fight choreography. First Templar is almost cartoonish and bland, while The Cursed Crusade is highly detailed with a lot of architectural and artistic eye candy. Fighting-wise, Cursed Crusade looks amazing with a huge number of finely choreographed attacks, combos and fatalities that it's almost impossible to remember them all by heart. The First Templar has a single 3-swings combo that you will be doing over and over again for hours of the entire campaign. If anything, Knights of the Temple II would be a worthy recommendation. It looks good, it plays good and it actually is an RPG game, unlike any other 3rd-person Templar-inspired title.
@MatthewAshworth
9 ай бұрын
@@HexenStar Well, First Templar also has fatalities, and as you learn new skills over the course of the game, you learn new combos and abilities. Of course combat system in The Cursed Crusade is better as it's more visceral and also varied as you can use many different weapons. But First Templar is not just centered on fighting. It has many levels which are stealthy or have you solving puzzles in dungeons. I enjoyed both games for what they are.

I hear Raven's Cry had a good reason for being "forgotten". I like Ventica a lot. Very clunky movement and weaponplay but and I think the sound was kind of all over the place but it definitely has a charm to it. Wouldn't mind a sequel. Hunted, sadly couldn't really keep my attention for long. Bound by Flame scared the crap outta me with some of its enemy designs, and coupled with the outdated feel I didn't stay on that one for long, either. Liking the concept, though. War of the North is awesome, at least to the extent it ties into the actual journey of the Ring, which will be apparent as you reach various parts of the game.

Found Silverfall on sale for $0.99! Looks interesting. Also tried to find Legend:Hand of God but it looks like it's abandoned and unplayable on modern machines.

Dawn Of Magic 1 and 2 as well. Your character could mutate visibly depending what you do.

these games are nice! I'll give some of them a try I've played some of those old games like, drakensang, cursed crusade, and sudeki and rune and they're awesome in their time. I bet games like tyranny, age of decadence, and pillars of eternity were forgotten as well, but they're good actually.

I feel like the term 'rpg' somewhat became blurry when it comes to define the genre of a given title. Nowadays everything is called an rpg. I mean it kinda makes sense since most game is about some role we play but it feels off to put games like Arx Fatalis or Drakensang on the same list as Sudeki or Enclave

If it has the a menu for equipment and character stats, then it's an rpg. Yes, that includes games like dark souls that has barely any role playing in it let alone even npcs to talk to.

Like for Arx Fatalis and Rune. Both are great games indeed. But Rune isn't RPG, it's ordinary slasher.

I played and finished Enclave back in my Uni days, really fun game. Never got to finish Archangel back then, now I can't seem to find the game anywhere. I got Venetica, Numen, Faery, Hunted: Demon's Forge, Sudeki, Silverfall, Arx Fatalis and Bound by Flame in my Steam Library, never got to finish them. Time to finish my backlog, starting with these games. :) Dungeon Siege 1 and 2, Dungeon Lords, FATE series and Hellgate: London are also some of my favorites and now seems to be forgotten.
