THIS IS CRAZY. I was mixing the same song and had the same issue and googled cymbal bleed into vocal mic and this video came up. WTF

Bro what is happening here. Lmaoo!!!!! I’ve been mixing this for a week… trying to figure out the best ways to control that damn bleed.. Today.. I decided to KZitem it.. “controlling bleed in vocal track” 😂😂.. the damn band was playing in the same mic as the singer. But this is wild… I haven’t even watched the video yet.. I’m astounded. I hope everyone who was mixing this in the past came out with a great mix.

Dudes and dudettes - don't do what I did! It's almost always a bad idea to "fix it in the mix"! Learn from my stupid mistake. Also, if you know of any other dynamic EQ that does what dynEQ is doing, preferably free, help out the community by posting it in a comment below. Happy mixing!

How do you reduce bleed from drum cymbals in a live performance?

Within the drums alone? Gating helps, editing drum hits and sample replacement as a last resort.

You guys haven’t heard a bleed project til you’ve heard the sorry tracks I have to deal with. The live engineer had the floor wedges so absurdly loud I knew the tracks would be pretty useless, but we deal. Didn’t the studio have an iso booth for the lead vox? I did appreciate the video and it did sound more tolerable. I however prefer my crashes way back in the mix with dominant snare. Cheers

Great video. The mix definitely benefitted from what you did- great job. I know how much of a pain that can be, and I use SurfEQ + Q3 for that- not better, just a different approach that I learned along the way. However the bigger problem to me is the massive overdriving and distortion on the vocals. What mic and preamp are you using for that? If you can’t get another mic in the loop for that (e.g. a Neumann M149, or at least a good dynamic like and Earthworks SR40-V or whatever mic flavor gives you what you’re looking for), I’d recommend dropping down to capture no higher than -18 dB LUFS on average/-10dB on peak with your current chain. It could be another related issue, but on KZitem it sounds like you’re ripping past your available short-term headroom by at 6 dB.

@@SPLMixing - If that’s the one Scott is at in Connecticut, then yup, it’s most likely a mic/levels issue.

Mike Senior's Cambridge website has an amazing multi-track library - all free - where you can download pretty much any genre and use it to practice mixing. I got the track from there, I think it was from one of the Telefunken sessions if I remember correctly. Just Google Mike Senior Multitrack Library and search his content..
