Having visited numerous church ruins in Norfolk the two featured in this video are particularly interesting because they both lie within the graveyard of an adjacent working church. However these are not as unique as one would imagine. Antingham and Great Melton are two of at least 12 villages in Norfolk where two medieval churches share the same churchyard. Reepham remarkably has three.
Antingham
The working church of St Mary was built between 1330 and 1360. The sad ruins of St Margaret is caged off within the graveyard of St Mary. The ruinous church is the older of the two and dates way back to the early 12th century. Both churches could have been used following the reformation, but by the 18th century, they were both in a terribly neglected state. After Black Death struck the village of Antingham had became too small to maintain two churches and it was decided to abandon St Margaret’s. Some stonework from St Margaret’s was utilised to restore St Mary’s. There is, sadly, no historical truth in the legend that the two churches of Antingham in one churchyard were built by two sisters.
Great Melton
The southerly 15th century tower is all that survives of St Mary's which stands in the graveyard of All Saints which is still a working church. Strangely it was in fact St Mary that was the working church until the late 19th century and All Saints was almost derelict. The decision was then taken to consolidate both and build a bigger church than St Mary against the tower of All Saints. In the 1880s St Mary was demolished with materials used to rebuild All Saints on a larger scale. All Saints Church is currently inhabited by a resident cat who lives in a cat house inside the front porch. There is a local legend that the area is haunted by a phantom coach, containing four ladies in white.
