Growing up in the 50's in a developing housing area, I would spend hours on hours watching the carpenters work and they for the most part wore the 877. I didn't know them by name but I always remembered the look of them. At that time I told myself I would buy that boot so, I turn 70 this June and I will buy them. It's very difficult to find and wear history but with the 877 you can.

First and foremost, I appreciate your review of the boot as a tool as opposed to a fashion accessory. However, your review seems to be a number of conclusions based on your general experience with boots and not time specifically working in the 877’s. Contrary to your review, these boots are NOT uncomfortable. It is quite the opposite. I bought my first pair in 1980 as a young man of 20. Worked six years of construction before going off to college. Wore them every day of college plus another ten years afterward.. I loved these boots. They were a second skin. They were so comfortable and they protected my feet. Had them resoled three times over twenty years. I lost them when an ex-girlfriend took them after we broke up (can you believe that?) Maybe she was jealous over how much I loved my boots. lol To be fair, I know that these days there are so many more boot options from which a working guy can chose. Maybe it’s too much of a hassle to have to break in boots. Still, knowing what I know, if needed a work boot as a daily tool, I’d choose the 877’s all over again. About the only improvement that could be made is added toe protection. I’ve been a “professional” white collar worker for years now. I don’t need to wear boots. But I do. After my ex stole my 877’s, I bought a pair of Red Wing 875’s, the 6 inch boot. I love them, too.

Greatest boots I’ve known. I’ve been building the Boston skyline for years in them. I’ll admit, the break in period is ridiculously long. And I recommend particular care getting the tongue centered and forming a good crease on each side. Little bit of rubbing alcohol on the hard spots speeds up the break in, and the occasional saddle soap brings em back to a brand new when they need a rehab. I rock insoles in mine, as I have very high arches. I tolerate the break because they practically become a negative of your foot. I typically have them anywhere from 4 to 6 years at a time, and resole them each year. It’s too bad to hear your negative review. I think your reviews are normally pretty good. Unfortunately, don’t think think you did your homework on this one... you can’t just try these out and get 877 comfy. You need to earn it.

This boot took me about a month to break In. It was a long and sometimes uncomfortable month but the payoff is so sweet. Everything including the all leather Insole are now perfectly molded to my feet and are better than any pair of orthotics I have tried. I’m pushing 10 hour days and 60 hour weeks in these and they are the first boot I have worn where my feet don’t ache at the end of the day and I’m not dying to take them off. These are not a boot I would rush Into. If you think these are going to be your next boots go buy a pair ASAP. Start wearing them on the weekends and nights around the house and doing little things like nights out on the town. After a few weeks of that when you can finally wear them the entire day start wearing them to work a few days a week. After that start wearing them every day of the work week with your back up boots in the car or locker if needed. You will get hot spots and maybe a blister every once and a while. Just understand that you are basically molding the perfect pair of boots to your feet every day you wear them. Have some mole skin in your first aid kit because you might need it. The only other thing I would add is ask for a pair of 80” laces before leaving the store and tie a little knot at the end of the laces so they don’t slip through the eyelets. Your lacing issues will be solved and you will live your new boots.

Red Wing sells the flat comfort which is a poron insert that takes up very little space. It really takes the edge off the boot, once the cork under the leather molds to your foot it offers fantastic arch support and cups the heel in much the same way an orthotic does. If you would like more shock absorption you can actually have a wedge Supersole 2 put on the boot as a resole through Red Wing.

Glad you like yours.....mine suck! If it wasn't for the $164.99 + tax I spent for them I would take them to Goodwill and dump them for some hobo to buy them that doesn't know any better. These boots still aren't comfortable even beat up like mine..... i68.tinypic.com/25k37yd.jpg i64.tinypic.com/2h3bl2u.jpg These boots are terrible and possibly the most uncomfortable I have ever bought. That triple stitched seam that connects the vamp area to the moc toe is a big thick glop of layered leather. It rubs abrasively right on the bones of your foot. It never wears down or goes away with use/break in. It's a design flaw and a manufacturing defect. $164.99 for garbage or $250 for an American icon......that's a no brainer decision to make for anyone other than guys trying to get by cheap. They have been dedicated as my "sacrifice boots" at work. I wear them when I am doing something that could possibly ruin a pair of boots to the point of needing thrown in the trash after one day and a mistake is made. I couldn't care less if these go in the trash hopper. They are pure junk and trash themselves. Might as well kill them with noble cause and put them out of their misery properly though. As +DevonReviewer mentioned, this is by no means to be considered as a work boot in UK, same in Canada where I live. I own the 6 inch version and they are as comfy as some sneakers I have from Frye that I paid $200+ for. I find that the leather insole and the cork midsole are exactly what my feet are looking for for long days moving around. I took me 2 weeks (8 wears) to have them broken in to my feet. They are now extremely comfortable. I do have experience with boots, I was a military member. I look to these boots for leisure and fashion.

You don't need insoles. The leather insoles break in and mold to your feet. Wear them for short periods and oil them. Once they break in they are soo comfortable. This is like a review of a brand new pair of 501 Levis, yeah they suck until you wear them for a while.

Still my favorite moc toe wedge crepe sole boot. Actually I own the 10877 (work model). These will last a lifetime of casual wear if you take care of them. Just a good comfortable multipurpose boot. They won't take a great amount of abuse, but no moc toe wedge sole boot will. For their intended purposes, they are perfect. If you want a boot that you can detonate C-4 on the toe, and still walk home, buy Whites USA Smoke Jumper lace to toe boots. EVERYTHING else has a life expectancy and is designed for moderate abuse/ normal wear and tear.

48 snowflake hipsters got offended when he called these a work boot. On a good not for them, running to your safe space is a great way to break these in. For me personally, I use these boots for work, and for occasional weekend style. For work, I use them while climbing towers; welding on top of said towers; sandblasting; hydroblasting, etc. For these applications, the boots hold up and maintain their shape significantly better than the Iron Rangers (just my experience). For weekend style, I pair them with some Raleigh Jones jeans, wear the laces loose, and throw on a henley or t-shirt, and it just works. Hipsters be damned. That didn't fit there, but damning hipsters always makes for a good time.

Not a fashion review? Reviews the boot not meant to be used for work. You should be reviewing the 10877

I just got into this whole boot thing after wearing cheap workboots my whole life. I can't see why ppl are willing to drop that much money for Redwings when you can arguably get a better boot from Thorogood for 100$ less

These were my last pair of boots, Break in time is horrible. The leather lining is super stiff, and like all crepe soles they wear out real quick. About 4 months and the soles in were bad shape. Not to mention that Red Wing wanted 150$ to resole them, after paying a nearly 300$ price tag. Ridiculous. Would never buy again. BTW Love the bootguy vid's

Buy the 50 dollar insole or the boot is not complete

Redwing Heritage Moc-Toe boot with wedge soles do not have a shank. Rather buy a Thorogood Moc-Toe wedge sole boot.

He says "I'm sure other guys who wear wedge sole boots will agree"..huh? Why would they wear wedge sole boots if they weren't comfortable???. That's the point of a wege sole, " comfort"

The soles wear out too fast on these boots. I put an insole on them and they are very comfortable boots. If you step crooked the soles will wear out crooked and you will be walking in crooked. In my opinion they are not for people who step crooked.

Never felt more secure in any other boot walk in the iron. Considering this was an American icon you didn't give it a just review. you barely spent any time or thought on this you just wanted it over with is how it came across to me.

The Boot Guy?! The absolute worst thing you can do for your boot leather is put mink oil on it. The leather will become almost wet feeling over time and the color will turn to shit.

Sir, the 877 are NOT working boots, the 811 are.

This review is super confusing. clearly the bootguy has never broke in a pair of the 877's after your break them in they are unreal fit. I still dont understand how you think they are not comfortable unless you have never broke a pair in...

Is it? Is it clear? Or could it be that I just don't think that 1970's boot technology is the best for the work at hand. But to answer the unasked question. Yes, back in the late 1980's when I started in the trades I had two pairs. Back then 877 was the cat's pajamas! But today with companies like keen and thorogood pushing the wedge sole further and further into a realm of unbelievable comfort why would one need a week or three of pain and discomfort.

@@TheBootGuyreviews Hey I own 5 pairs of Thorogoods myself I love them ( I rotate 1 pair of 8 inch moc toe(trail crazy horse leather) also the thorogood 8 inch waterproof and my third pair in the rotation is Redwings 877's. Technology and advancements for a faster break in is great. But in my experience Redwings upper leather is much more durable (I am a union Cement mason) than thorogood, and the boot is made from leather not man made material welts like thorogood. Thorogood does have the longer lasting sole but in my opinion the redwing sole is much softer. Either way I enjoy your videos and have always looked to see what you say about a boot before I purchase them. I was just disappointed when you did not like them(me being born and raised in Minnesota I am sure I am biased). I think you should a pair try again in the future. Thanks for your reviews hopefully I made some sense typing on this all out.

The soles on these are terrible. I walk 11k steps and 20 plus floors a day on a site, and I used two soles this year. Disappointed in them, not worth the cash. Throw a better sole on there.

Worse boots ever paid $314. Peace of crap they never broke in after 8 months, the stitching ripped twice and had to be redone in less than 2 months of buying, Georgia boots are the most comfortable boots.

Love you videos, interesting and honest perspective for the work environment. Interestingly in the UK, no one would consider this a work boot as pretty much all "live" work sites require toe protection. I think this applies to all trades, and anywhere heavy items would be dropped on the foot, also midsole protection to prevent puncture from below if standing on nails etc..... I personally look to these boots for leisure and fashion, and I love what Red Wing do.

A LOT of guys here in the US wear 877's or Thorogood mock toe boots on job sites. Every site I work on I see them. But yes agreed they are definitely nice enough to wear for fashion :)
