+David Ramos Yo I just commented on a vid his lil cousin put up on facebook... I told her I saw Lloyd dish out 25 assists at West 4th "after" he got shot, that was the beginning of his comeback. I went to prison for a while in '93 but I kept up with him and was happy to see him get back. He stuck around the league for a few years left came back and played again for a short while, and now is coaching basketball. I'm so happy for Sweet-pea but only if the world woulda seen what he was at 19-20 years old...salute my brother

I remember reading the book about his life. Then I remember seeing him play at The Rucker Park and just like the book said his range was deadly. On some pos as soon as he crossed half court he would let it fly and would make the shot more times than he missed it. I moved to Florida and was working at Disney and bumped into him. I was able to tell him I was a fan. You gotta be a fan of someone who is able to turn their life around.

As far as new york playground legends go no one comes close to Lloyd 'Swee' Pea' Daniels. I remember finding the book Swee' Pea and Other Playground Legends: Tales of Drugs, Violence, and Basketball in my high school library during my sophmore year in high school while i was playing JV ball and thinking "man, i wonder if this is all bullshit or if this dude Lloyd Daniels was really that good...and if he was that good I wish i could have seen the form of his jumper so i could copy it." Then out of freaking nowhere 'Tark the Shark' Jerry freaking Tarkanian becomes the new head coach of my home team San Antonio Spurs and all of a sudden I see freaking Lloyd Swee' Pea Daniels in a San Antonio Spurs uniform and he is freaking playing real freaking minutes and no looking passes to big Dave Robinson and coming down hill leading the fast break dribbing down low and slow mo real smooth and pulling up for fast break 3 pointers....and freaking burrying them bitches all net! It was freaking surreal. And you could see glimpses of what would have been greatness. He had court vision, mid-range, long-range, low-post, pick and pop, pick and roll, not much defense but plenty of finger roll! Lloyd Daniels was the real freaking deal and I got to see him play on my NBA team. It was a gift. Lloyd Daniels is no doubt the greatest basketball talent that we never truly got to see in it's full God given potential. Name one other playground legend that played a handful of high school games, no college games and made it to the NBA on pure talent alone and held his own. And by the way Lloyd was half the player he should have been by the time he made it to the NBA on the spurs team. Those were fun years for me and guess what? My freaking jump shot improved when I copied the way Lloyd flattened his wrist all the way back on him jumpers which made the ball travel in a beautiful natural arc with no effort from me. True genius...glad I got to experience it.

Smoothest player I ever saw! I also saw the corruption. I saw a tournament use him, as a "ringer," to play with "biddies!" And then the four high schools in two years. And then the drug issues and near death. For this dude to make the NBA, through all of that, showed how much of a talent he was!

Too bad they didn’t have the “NBA Rookie Challenge” during the All Star break at this time. Would’ve been interesting to see Daniels play in that game

This was less than a month before Tark was fired and John Lucas, ironically, replaced him as head coach of the Spurs.

He was tall, but not "long". Didn't have longish arms, but, was a deadly scorer regardless. Great player who, unfortunately, had demons. But he never hurt anyone....but himself. Lots of people had love for him. Too bad he fell just 7 games short of an NBA pension. His last team should've given him those games.

I saw Lloyd, on June 15th, 2017 at the West 4th cage. He was drunk. I said, "Hey Lloyd." He walked over to me and said, "Let's go get a cold one." I told him that I don't drink. And he said, "Let's go get some water then." I turned him down. No one was really giving him attention. Ironically, there was an African American woman, in the crowd who taught at UNLV, and she told me they only used him for his basketball skills.

The reality is that athletics, especially in profit-making sports such as basketball and football bring so much money to the schools and through the media would get public attention even from student non-athletes. Sweet Pea had the most promising talent that not only UNLV, but even the high schools that he attended in NYC kept passing him on despite poor grades and a learning problem that no one took time to help him with. UNLV would have had him take basket weaving and needlepoint classes to keep him eligible had it not been for drugs. So I can believe what you are saying about what the lady in UNLV was saying.

lulolancey wow now that's a story. I don't think J.T. used him. He was the one of a very few that gave him chances to fix his life.

Tarkanian always gave second chances. Had it not been for him Daniels would not played in the show...awesome story...
