Ciao! Today we’re gonna look at the reflexive verbs and pronouns in Italian. I’ve tried to make this topic as simple as possible but please reach out to me if you have any questions.
---------------------------- SUMMARY OF THE LESSON --------------------------
Before we start this lesson make sure you’re familiar with the personal pronouns in Italian. You can check out this lesson here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xIR4loCPs2leeGU
A verb can have 3 different forms based on its relationship with the subject of the sentence.
1. Active Form = the subject performs the action e.g. io lavo la macchina (I wash the car)
2. Passive Form = the action is performed on the subject by someone else e.g. la macchina è lavata da me (the car is washed by me)
3. Reflexive Form = the subject performs the action on themselves e.g. Io mi lavo (I wash myself)
A verb in the reflexive form always comes together with a reflexive pronoun. The reflexive pronouns (pronomi riflessivi) in Italian are the following:
MI = myself
TI = yourself
SI = himself / herself
CI = ourselves
VI = yourselves
SI = themselves
And this is how you structure a sentence in the reflexive form:
SUBJECT + REFLEXIVE PRONOUN + VERB
For example:
Io mi alzo = I get up
Tu ti siedi = you sit down
Lui si annoia = he’s bored
Watch the video for more examples and to learn some other important things regarding the reflexive form in Italian.
