Hallo, thx for your videos, all are very helpful. I have one sugestion to this tutorial. You can delete "Index" column before step Pivoted Column - then will be easier and faster Try it :) Regards :)

Many thanks, Mynda. Useful techniques with index and modulo. I'm just catching up with this 5-year-old video! This must be an older version of PQ where it doesn't always show the data type symbol on the left of the header, or is that a setting you can control?
@MyOnlineTrainingHub
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's an old version of Power Query before we had the luxury of data type drop downs/icons in the column headers :-)

If you want to create reports from tabular data then I recommend PivotTables.

Hi! And what if you could not have the convenient structure of 1 row/expense per person? e.g. some had annual leave and sick day expenses, others had annual leave only. Would you create a column, clear all except for names and then fill down?
@MyOnlineTrainingHub
2 жыл бұрын
You could use a conditional column to extract the relevant data into new columns based on the row labels.

Hi Mynda, thank you for posting the videos, they are very helpful. I added a custom column = if [Value]="*None" then [Entitlements] else null and then I used the fill down and got a similar result. What do you think? Thanks

thank you for your sharing! it's so very useful for me to study! but i also have a question. it's so good when we have 2 rows (names and entitlement) but in the case, a name with 2 entitlements, a name with 1 entitlement. so we can not choose 2 in modulo box? how can we solve it? hope you help me.

Hi Dau, you will need to find another identifier you can use to number the rows. Please post your question and sample Excel file on our Power Query forum where we can help you further: www.myonlinetraininghub.com/excel-forum/power-query

+Nathan Ondricek All jesting aside - great video and thank you for uploading. Two follow up questions. How exactly do you "re use" a power query? When you get a new report in a month's time it will likely be exported in a separate, new Excel file. Would you have to move the Excel tab from the new report in to the old Excel report where this Power Query saved and then "point it" to the correct table somehow? Or would you have to paste the new data directly over the old data? Is it possible to just save the steps that you made in Power Query and port them over to a different workbook? Also - I'm not exactly sure how the line items in the "entitlements" column are defined, but would it be possible (or beneficial) to separate out the "holiday leave 90 hours" from all of the "holiday leave accruals"? This might be immaterial, but it looked like it was some kind of different entitlement type. I'm sure it's possible (text to columns comes to mind), but I wanted to see how you would go about it.

+Nathan Ondricek :-) the 'none's' had to go! To re-use the query simply copy the M code from the Advanced Editor in the Power Query window and create a new query in your new file and paste the code in there. If you're not confident with the Advanced Editor then you can also make a copy of your file and then copy and paste the new data over the original data.

Power Query is an amazing tool that enables us to automate the getting and transforming of data that we used to need VBA for. You can get a better idea of what Power Query can do on my course page here: www.myonlinetraininghub.com/excel-power-query-course No pressure to join :-)
