Yesterday, I defrosted my freezer by removing the back panel & using a hair dryer to melt the build-up. My fridge works again, but I noticed more build-up this morning. What can I do to prevent this from recurring? Thanks in advance!

Hard to say for sure you would need to check with a meter if the voltage was dropping off. Odds are it’s a bad contact point somewhere, likely in the motor windings. If you wanted to guess at it I would go with the motor. I hope that helps some!

Power coming and going to the refrigerator's compressor is not good... Generally if the compressor shuts down you should wait at least 5 minutes before starting it again so the pressures can equalize. It may have ruined the compressor... You may be able to put a new start relay on the compressor and get it going again, but it's a gamble. Sorry, Good luck!

Hi, I have a GE Profile PSHW6YGXBDSS side by side refrigerator which works well except there is water accumulating in the bottom of the refrigeration section. This refrigerator seems to be more complex than any of the ones in the videos I watched. I can’t find the drain for the defrost water which is most likely plugged up. As I said, everything works fine, it defrosts and cools perfectly. When I first started troubleshooting the problem, I noticed a big blob of ice that had formed around some ducts/pipes on the left side (adjacent to freezer) back wall around center height. I used a heat gun to gently thaw the ice away but that alone didn’t solve the problem. I tried to find a manual or some info on where the drains are but have been unsuccessful. I appreciate any advice/info anybody could give. Many thanks, Dan

@applianceassistant

The defrost drain is located behind the back wall of the freezer at the base of the evaporator coil. You may even be able to see it at the base of the back wall inside the freezer on the right side. I would probably start with pulling the back wall off and checking the heaters. However, if you are getting ice on the freezer floor that usually means that the defrost system is working at least some times. I found the manual for the PSH23 model that may be close... applianceassistant.com/Appliance-Repair/Appliance-Service-Repair-Manual-Feature.php?id=1186 Hope that helps!

applianceassistant Thanks so much for the manual. I managed to get the back panel off. The drain appears to be clear. There is frost on the lower half of the coils, not sure if that indicates a problem or not so I took some pictures: www.flickr.com/photos/125914377@N04/ Please let me know if you think there is a problem. Perhaps you could also explain how a problem in the freezer can cause water in the refrigerator bottom.
@applianceassistant

Thanks for the pictures! Unfortunately that's bad... When only part of the evaporator is frosted and the rest is clean aluminum, it means the gas is restricted from flowing freely because of some contamination within the sealed system. Pretty costly and involved repair. You may want to look into your replacement option. : ( Do you mind it I use your photos on my website as an example for other people?

applianceassistant Yes, you can use my pictures. A couple more questions though: 1. Why would that cause water in the refrigerator? 2. Any harm to keep using it while it still works and just wipe up the water every day? 3. Is it worth trying to defrost manually for 24 hours and see if that somehow fixes it? Thanks!

So a few months ago my fridge turned off one day and didn't turn back on. I learned about the defrost timer and how turning it with a screwdriver/giving it a tap can get it going again, which worked for me for a while. However, recently my fridge no longer goes into defrost mode, and the freezer/fridge have gotten warmer. The freezer part is cold enough to preserve food and get drinks cold but can't keep ice frozen and the fridge is only slightly below room temp. I've recently replaced the temp control thermostat but that didn't work. The screwdriver in the defrost timer no longer does anything but turn the fridge off after turning it a few times. Could replacing the defrost timer be the fix or did the issue get worse? Your video quality is very good btw, you are a real professional.

I know you posted this nearly 10 years ago, but here in 2020 you sure helped point me in the right direction! Thank you for the lesson in the basics of how the auto defrost works. I'm sure that's my problem due to the back panel of the freezer just covered with frost, and after removing that panel I found the whole coil area caked with ice. I'm getting all that ice off so I can check the thermostat and heating element.

This explains a lot. My side-by-side Frigidaire's defrost stopped working and the freezer coil turned into a block of ice. With no air movement, everything started getting warm. The fridge repairman replaced the thermostat, but also said that the "board" should also be replaced at a cost of $300. He ordered the board, but for the 3 or 4 days before the part arrived, the defrost cycle operated normally both the fridge and freezer side were nice and cold. I kept checking the coil in the freezer and there was no ice buildup. I canceled any further repairs because the board was obviously not needed.

This video is INCREDIBLE! You clearly state all the problems that could go wrong with the defrost system, how to diagnosis the problem and how to fix it. Over the summer, I am manually defrosting every 2 weeks. When I do it again in a few days, I will get my multimeter and figure out if its a bad sensor or a bad heating element and then try to fix it myself. A repairmen said it would cost $100 just to come to my rural location and diagnose the problem. I have a receipt left by the previous home owner showing he paid $200 to have the "defrost control board" replaced 10 years ago. Thanks to this video, I can determine, myself, for free, if that repair needs to be done again or if it is something else. THANKS!

@gaptoothed1 All you can really do with no tools is unplug it, open the doors and pray. But If refrigerator temperatures have been an ongoing minor issue you may want to take a close look at where the cold air enters the fresh food area. You may want to double check that model number, I don't think you have a door in the air passage...It is probably being blocked by ether frost or food. The main tool you would need is a 1/4" nut driver you could probably find at the dollar store. Good Luck!

Here is a simpler way that we use instead of all these voltage checks, through on a amperage gauge, compressor running and cold air coming out should draw 1 to 2 amps, now turn the defrost timer till it click, on comes the heater 1 to 2 amps, now heater will run till cold temp thermostat reaches 45 degrees off goes the heater element, and you tested all that with out taking off anything. Wow.

If they get very iced up or the evaporator fan in the freezer is not working you will start to have freezer temp problems due to poor airflow... you need to allow the evaporator to thaw out and then if your evap. fan is working check your defrost heater part#WR51X10055 and defrost thermostat part#WR50X10068 if they are okay then it is likely the main board in the back part#WR55X10552 the heater and the board are both common to fail : ( I have testing help on my website if you need it. @MrMindShifter The defrost cycle should happen every 8 to 10 hours of compressor run time which is usually every few days depending on how often you open the door. If the food is frozen generally you are okay. Ice cream is an excellent indicator of proper freezer temperatures because it changes consistency very rapidly depending on temperatures. It's also a great reason to stock some ice cream :) Mechanically the thermostat is the only thing that may be causing large temp swings...

I doubt the defrost system is your problem. Sounds like a control thermostat... or your compressor may be over heating... You may want to check your condenser fan and clean out the condenser coils under the appliance. If it is the mechanical thermostat type you can test for voltage into and out of the thermostat when the refrigerator should be cooling. If it does not pass through, the thermostat must be bad. Good luck!

I would not be able to cover all of the possibilities in the comment box. I would suggest looking at the refrigerator troubleshooting section on my website. There is a link in the comments section of this video. You need to determine if the compressor is running or not. If it is running and not cooling in the freezer that's bad. If its not running it could be a number of control parts that are not allowing the compressor to get the power it needs to run. Take a look at the article. Good Luck!

The only thing I can think of on yours is that the control is stuck in the cooling state, so the compressor is constantly running. I'm sure when it was unplugged it warmed up... but when its on it should cycle off when it gets down to 0º or so. If not the temp control system that cycles the compressor on and off must have a problem. Depending on the model there may be a few parts that could cause this.. sensors, control boards and switches etc.

@ddogz03 Probably not related issues.. The leak into the fresh food area could be caused by the tube that fell and you reconnected, but the cooling issue is probably something else. Is the compressor running? take a look at the "troubleshooting refrigerator problems" page on my web site and see if that makes any light bulbs pop above your head. @ChristTheBaptiste I don't know if you have adjusted the controls yet but if you do and that helps you may have a weak thermostat. The other thing that you will want to look at is the coils under the refrigerator. It's common for a large amount of dust to collect and keep the unit from cooling well. You can clean them with a vacuum and a condenser brush, or even a heavy duster. Also is the freezer fan working? If you email any questions through ApplianceAssistant . com I can write more.

You took me from zero to hero! I fixed the fridge a couple weeks ago! I've since referred many people/friends/family to it as well :) Question -- my friend left the door open overnight :/ Frost has been growing on the back freezer wall over the past 24-36 hours. I'm guessing that the defroster isn't given enough time on the cycle to melt it all away, hence the growing? What can I do besides transferring all the food and airing it out? Can I manually advance multiple melt-cycles in a row?

@taracatherine3810 Leaving the door cracked while the unit is running would probably magnify the problem...the fact that it seemed to help makes me think that the air return duct from the fresh food side may be the one clogged and by leaving the freezer door open you were creating a new way for air to move back into the freezer. Did unplugging it and letting it thaw out help? Sorry for the slow response, December madness has got me running in all directions.

@Philrocks09 Bummer...I'm not sure about that Frigidaire model number...If the coils are on the back of the fridge and clean then it does not sound good. If the coils were under the unit then you may have a condenser fan problem, but static condenser models (coils on the back) don't have a fan by the compressor that can fail. It you can feel the compressor pumping (vibrating) then I would say that one is a goner. Save your service call cash for a replacement. Sorry :(

@100puerto1 You may have a problem with the overload relay. It is a switch attached to the side of the compressor. Unplug the refrigerator and remove the relay, then give it a shake... @robert3359 Well...If the freezer is the proper temperature and the fresh food area is not cooling yes. However, a bad evaporator fan in the freezer compartment can also cause the same symptoms. In some cases a bad freezer fan can cause your freezer temperatures to be off as well...frozen on the bottom and thawing on the top. If the freezer is just not cold period thats when you need to be looking at the compressor, start system, or thermostat. Clear as mud right? (More at my web site)Thanks!

@jurnagin Normally turning the controls all the way up would not cause a block of ice, but there may have been a defrost problem or ice buildup that caused you son to think that he needed to do that in the first place. If the problem comes back after a few days after you deiced it check that the air ducts are clear and the evaporator fan is working. If all that looks good you will need to check the defrost thermostat and timer for proper operation.

@mkiitmr2 Some Whirlpool models can be forced into defrost that way for diagnostics. It sounds to me like you need a new adaptive defrost control (ADC). You can force it to defrost but obviously it should be doing that on it's own. If you would consider purchasing the part through a link on my main website ( ApplianceAssistant . Com) I get a commission and would really appreciate it! If you email me a model number through the site I can look up the part for you and send you a link. Thanks!

@gbgal Well the puddle is probably being caused by the defrost cycle. So we can assume that the unit is defrosting. Your cooling problems are probably being caused by the door being left open at some point, allowing frost to build up in the air ducts, or you may have a bad evaporator fan (the fan in the freezer) If the leak is not a cracked pan I would look at the small drain below the evaporator. It may be clogged or frozen allowing water to leak into the refrigerator..under the crispers..

@djkaneck1 Unfortunately I can only write 500 characters here with no links so it's a little difficult... Try looking at the Troubleshooting Refrigerator Problems page on my web site. ApplianceAssistant Com (the link is on my profile) You need to determine if the compressor is running or not. If it is running and not enough cold is being created your only hope is that the evaporator fan is out. If its not running you may have a bad thermostat or start relay. Email me if I can help more. Thanks!

@genestermeister I love to fix things and try to reduce waste so I hate to say it but it’s probably best to replace the fridge. In the old days it was a common practice to repair a sealed system but because of regulation it has become highly specialized and very expensive. It’s kind of a catch 22, regulate a “toxic” gas and create more trash. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Look at it this way…you get to stimulate the economy:) Thanks for your posts!

@FORDGTFANATIC If the cooling compartment is not down to temperature the thermostat should be energizing the compressor. If the compressor is not being supplied with current the thermostat may be bad or a loose contact. If the compressor is being energized but is not turning on, ether the overload relay or the compressor is out. If the compressor is running but cold is not being generated you have a coolant leak or there is a restriction within the sealed system. Doesn’t sound good.

@stringfellowhawke247 If the fan is working well and your ice cream is cold then you must have some kind of problem with the diffuser door or the air return vent is clogged. Even when I bugged my refrigerator to cause the frost that you see in the video it took three days to get that much frost. Some frost is normal but it should be removed automatically by the defrost cycle. Could you get me a brand and model number please?

Sorry I didn't see this post when I was writing the last one. It could be the compressor with that bit of info... HAve you or any of the techs cleaned out the condenser coils under the appliance? there is a 3n1 hard start relay kit that increases the starting torque of the compressor (about 20.00 part). That may buy you a year or so if it is going bad... : (

Very hard to guess with not much information... I have a refrigerator troubleshooting help section on my website that may help. There is a link to the site in the description of the video, then look for "Appliance Repair Troubleshooting Index" then "Troubleshooting Refrigerator Problems" under refrigerators. Hope that helps! Good luck!

True but the thermostat opens and closes by sensing the temperature. If the thermostat is not frozen and open the heater will not be energized even if the timer is energizing the defrost circuit... Also when the defrost heater has done it's job and the thermostat thaws out and opens the defrost cycle stops, regardless of if the timer is still active or not.

That's a tough one... Take a look at the troubleshooting refrigerator problems pages on my website. (There is a link in the description of this video.) First check if the compressor is running. If it is you need to see if there is an ice buildup that may be blocking airflow, you may also have a problem with an internal fan that is not moving the air. What is your Samsung model#?

@annettemint What is your refrigerators model number? Try cleaning all the dust off the coils under the appliance and see if that helps. Also make sure that the fan down by the compressor is working and not jammed up. If not send me an email through my web site with your model number and I can try to dig into it a little more.

@thegannclan Hopefully just cleaning the condenser coils really well will fix your problem. You will also want to check the fan the pulls air across the coils and compressor is working and not jammed up. That is the other very common thing that happens with refrigerators...air flow problems when it comes to the dissipation of heat from the condenser coils under the refrigerator, dust can effect how well the freezer cools. If the coils are clean and its still not cooling well... Not so good.

Is water coming out from the freezer side? or a sheet of ice on the floor of the freezer? Any frost on the back wall inside the freezer? What is your model number? It might be best if you contact me through my website so I can give you my phone number and we can talk over the phone...

@kenwoodprobes93 Chances are you would just need to replace the evaporator fan. At ten years it is almost certainly worth fixing. If you would like more model specific help trying to fix it yourself, you can contact me through my website. There is a link in the video description.

I just bought a 1991 Ford Damon Escaper that has a Norcold fridge. It won't cool either on gas or electric. The compressor is very hot and there is no noise or fan blowing anywhere. Does this mean the fridge is shot? Thanks in advance.

It sounds like it's possibly a new issue... I don't think I would trust nail polish to fix the thermostat though. usually when they pop there is not enough pressure on the contacts for it to work properly. what is your brand and model number?

What is your model number? Not sure what you mean about the noises to freeze up? When you say "minimum ice in the freezer"... do you see frost on the back wall? Lastly do you hear a fan running in the freezer compartment?
