Thank you for sharing this wonderful information about this sewing machine. My truest best friend gave me her mother's sewing machine and her mother has passing to be with the heavenly Father. And I had no idea how to thread this machine until I typed in the model number and I showed me the video. Once again thank you for Susie Williams from Cuero Texas.

This is great, two-for-one advice. I have a high school machine from the 1960s and was just given another 1960's vintage Montgomery Ward. My experience is limited to timing a third vintage Pfaff industrial; thanks to your video, I'll now tackle the two "little guys." Funny, that service manuals for the Montgomery Ward -- I used to build and repair bikes in one of their stores -- don't seem to exist.

I really enjoyed watching you work on this machine, you have such a look of comfort and expertise taking apart and cleaning the sewing machine. I have a really old one I got maybe 40 years ago and still use though infrequently, have done a little cleaning of it but not to this extent. You might have inspired me to do a more indepth cleaning.

Thank you, yes learning how to do maintenance on your sewing machine, definitely save money. My viking sewing machine cost $110.00 for tune up... I can do the oiling and cleaning every year and maybe take it to for a "tune up" every 5 years. most often, it is the dust and lint buildup that makes your machine not work well...well beside blunt needles. Just be careful with air cans and computer machines. You don't want to push dust on the motherboard. For those machine you use a vacuum to clean the lint. thank you for watching!

I am attempting to repair the UHT J1980 for my mom. I ordered a couple belts (there are two in this machine). The only issue is that there is a three inch wire clip that has come loose and I am trying to figure out where it goes!! I am trying to order a service manual to see if I can figure it out. I cannot believe how hard it is to find a parts list and diagram for this machine!! If I am able to solve the mystery, I might post my own video showing the top side of the machine and from different views. Oh how I would love to find another one just like this and look under the hood.

Personally my favorites are the mechanical Pfaff models, design and manufacturing was all in-house so all of them are very similar in design and easy to diagnose once you are familiar with them. Even the current mechanical Select line has a nearly identical case and mechanics to the machines they made back in the 80's.

That is awesome that you fix up older machines to give to people who want to learn how to sew. Sometimes I do the same,fix up give it to someone. I am just a stickler for vintage machines lasting even longer. My passion is a little bit different in that respect as I get emotionally attached to a sewing machine that has been neglected.. For machines with what may appear hard to find parts for there are NUMEROUS Groups on Facebook are available for those hard to find parts. Examples is there is a group for JUST SINGER, Just Japanese machines, one for MONTGOMERY WARD, another FOR ONLY BROTHER Sewing machines, etc. All a person needs to do is on Facebook search box type in vintage Brother SEWING MACHINE PARTS GROUP” and a list of groups pops up to join and find parts from. Parts are NOT ALWAYS hard to find when you know where to look. SO for MONTGOMERY-WARD machines Inwent to that specific group AND SEWING MACHINE RESOURCE GROUP because the people there have a WEALTH OF Knowledge of where parts for older machines CAN BE FOUND!

You should NEVER use canned air in a sewing machine! It may make maintaining your machine quicker BUT....The canned air , when dispensed, as it sprays it also emits MOISTURE into your sewing machine and over time rust will begin to develop.You use a brush first, remove any threads,and invest in the mini vacuum set for sewing machines, I have one and I know that I am PROTECTING my machines from EVER getting any rust.

Scrapnmaniac, this is wonderful! I hope you are still around and you can let us know what adjustments you used after refurbishing to achieve the fabulous straight stitch. I don't have a manual. If the machine is still available, perhaps you could borrow it back? Do you happen to know what the dial inside the light area is for (the door on the left side, where you can oil the take up lever area) and how do you choose which number?
@scrapinmaniac

Hi there. I am still around but not as active as I would like to be due to working full time. I don’t the machine and it was donated to one a church member. I reviewed the video and if you referring to the cream looking dial in the light box, that is the tension dial. However you adjust your tension with the silver dial in front of the machine. For tension I use two different treads for the needle and bobbin. I then adjust the tension dial carefully. Making little turns on the dial at a time. Also there is a screw in the bobbin case that can be adjusted. But the bobbin tension is trickier. There are videos on adjusting bobbin tension on KZitem you can view to understand how to adjust it. Good luck and I hope you get your machine working again. It is a good machine.

I have a Montgomery Ward sewing machine from 1973, made by Happy, Model URR 260, the zig zag quit working, though the buttonhole stitch works. Saw a video about the needle reaching the catch at the tip after take the bobbin out, seems fine, may be an 1/8th of inch off? But no screw to adjust the needle going up and down to have it be meet at the top of catch in bobbin area as the needle hits it. Any suggestions to get the zig zag to work, just straight stitches in that mode. Thanks:)

What model is that? I have a MW UHT J1964 that is quite similar in design and I'd like to know the company that manufactured it. They both have what seems to me to be a rather unique design in the way they thread in the front and that knob inside the front cover that adjusts the presser foot pressure. Do you know of any other makes that use that same system? Mine is missing the bobbin case, but that whole assembly seems to be a common design, so I think the bobbin case should be easy to find, but I don't know what other makes use that same part. Do you know?

I have been a seamstress for over 40 years and used MANY different model sewing machines. This video made me VERY Nervous! If you are "reconditioning" sewing machines,( this is actually "maintenance" on them) WITHOUT user manuals, but you can find them online to refer to and the fact you have noted as"self-taught" without any other tools than online videos is not reassuring. I keep wondering if the machines you are "tinkering with" all belong to you OR if you are doing this as extra income, and the machines are OTHER peoples' machines, STOP. I am "self-taught" to a certain degree BUT when I was growing up my mother AND My Grandmother "MENTORED" TO ME. My grandmother had actually worked for SINGER during wartime as a yound woman. Maintaining ANY SEWING Machine REQUIRES ATTENTION TO DETAILS ALWAYS and some patience. The way the bobbin casings are made there should be no problem replacing them in a machine RIGHT the FIRST time, they have the indentations for the clamp arms as well as either a pin on the bottom or a "cut-out " to match up. At the very least it is impossible to NOT remember where the needle is going t come down and meet the bobbin. Most states have some kind of sewing machine repair groups and it would be VERY Beneficial for you to find one and learn the RIGHT WAY to repair (or as you call it "recondition") a sewing machine . ESPECIALLY if other people are depending on you to return their machine in perfect working order. I honestly would not ask to have my many machines to be "reconditioned" by ANYONE that SLAMS shut the Light Cover and hard snaps the "table" piece over the free arm! If it is NOT my machine I am working on I treat it as if IT IS MY MACHINE with TLC! Find a Class and THEN do some videos, this one is TOO Scary and UNSETTLING TO WATCH.

Thank you for the advice. I don't sell machine and or repair other people's machines. This machine was a discarded machine that was going to be thrown away and I rescued it and gave it the church to use. I have reconditioned other machines that I keep or give away to friend that want to learn how to sew and can't afford a machine. I pick up old singers that only do straight stitch and buy the parts needed to make them work again, Its a hobby and don't need the income for this since I work in high tech. industry.
