Many of you may have noticed Reg Hartt's posters around Toronto over the years. His black-and-white photocopies - papered on telephone poles, construction walls and so on - advertise screenings of obscure and hard-to-find 16mm films from his collection, together with his introductions. Reg still does these screenings to this day.
This is a super 8mm student film I made about Reg in 1987, while at York University Film. I had been to Sheridan for a semester prior and had a friend in the Animation program there, so I attended many lectures on the history of cartoons. Moving to Toronto I attended Reg's screenings and found both him and them entertaining and fascinating.
We did this documentary while Reg was at the Cabana Room at the Spadina Hotel (now defunct). What occurred during our one night of filming was unexpected, but I think it gave us material to present a well-rounded picture about Reg, a brilliant (if sometimes controversial) fixture of Toronto's counter-culture scene.
