From earliest times the Régordane was one of the principal trade routes between the Mediterranean and the north of France. It grew into a popular pilgrimage route. The town of Saint-Gilles became the fourth most important pilgrim destination after Rome, Compostella and Jerusalem. This age-old highway has fallen out of use but traces can still be seen on the route between Le Puy to St-Gilles, 250 km long, today the GR 700.
