@@TheKingofAverage I'd rather see a game fully developed and tested enough. I mean errors in a mission setup are relatively easy to spot. Think you nailed it! Great and honest review. I will be house ruling the noise too. Would love to see how you house rule it too.
@TheKingofAverage
4 жыл бұрын
You bet Will! Here's where I'm currently at: For noise: * Ignore all 1's completely. * Never roll when picking up an item/objective, just spend the action. * Draw a card for a 2, do the top action, no roll. * 3's I roll, always draw a card and do the top, do the bottom depending on result. This helps a ton. It's amazing what just a small tweak like this will accomplish. It doesn't solve the disconnect of having random partols waltz through a door all the time, but definitely helps. For Vril surge's: *Take the wound and a normal jam. That's it. This is WAY better. It's still sucks as you get a wound and essentially lose a whole action now, but it's no longer something ridiculous like losing 1 (or more) actions to loot an orb, an action to unjam it, an item slot for the orb and a wound to top it all off. That's far too costly. So far this has helped get the bad mechanics mostly out of the way of the fun and I've been happy with it :)

Spontaneous idea on the whole Vril-jamming-thing: Surge (?) does not jam your weapon but "unvrils" it, so you have to turn it to its unbuffed side. Depending on balance the attack could fail in addition or something. Orbs let you "revril" it again. Haven't played the game but sounds like that fixes it. I kinda hope it does not because that would mean I made a better version of this core gameplay element then they did during all the development time...
@marmank

I have less of a problem with a lot of the stuff than you have, but you do make a lot of good points. Luckily it's easy to houserule a lot. For instance, when a Vril weapon is "empty", I just use the normal side, until I find a Vril Orb to activate the Vril again. I still roll all noise, but I also really like rolling those dice, they are of great quality. By now I know a lot of rules and tokens to use the rulebook only occasionally and I like setting a game like this up; it's part of the fun for me :)

Just read a changed rule involving noise and items in the errata: Search (p10)Replace the Search section with the following:If a hero is in an area with at least one facedown object and no enemy unit is present, he can perform the Search action. Do a noise test at the value 2 and flip all the facedown objects faceup. Then, when the test is over, choose a faceup object and place it on the hero’s dashboard.If the hero wants to perform the Search action to retrieve an object that has already been placed faceup, then no noise test is performed.
@TheKingofAverage
4 жыл бұрын
Ah interesting, that's better I suppose. I simply just take the action to pick up an item at this point. Costing an action is plenty for loot, especially considering most cards don't provide it. Interesting vril mechanic! I just take the wound and do a normal jam and have been fine with that so far. I might try yours though as it still uses the orbs.

An hour after the video was posted, proving I watched before commenting! Well, I was going to write a BGG review, but now I feel it's mostly moot because I concur with 99.9% of your review. -The action card mechanics and hero variety are fantastic, despite the non-thematic ways in which they are disrupted. -The noise mechanic is so foundationally disruptive to the other mechanics as to be a complete failure of the game's philosophy. If noise were so detrimental to these heroes, I would simply not send them on this mission, especially Redhawk who decided to take a sniper rifle into an underground bunker. I would send only spies and assassins with knives (O'Reilly was saved with almost exclusively knife attacks). The only reason I am still planning to write a review is to address the biggest issue I have with the game that you glossed over: the alarm countdown. More than the noise mechanic, it defeats nearly every other mechanic in the game by punishing the player for doing anything other than completing the mission as fast as possible. It turns the game from a dungeon crawler to an efficiency puzzle. It ends the game anti-climactically with a non-thematic, arbitrary clock. This is artificial difficulty in its most egregious form. I plan on finishing the campaign with expansions, as well as a few raid missions. Then, I'm going to play everything over again _without the alarm countdown_ to see how the game changes. Will it make the game too easy? Possibly. Will it make the game more fun? I suspect it will, as it will allow me to explore more rooms, access more loot, take more wounds, and engage in more cinematic encounters with the bad guys. You know... the reasons I got the game.
@BoardGameCo
4 жыл бұрын
Small idea for you (that I was working on before I gave up and sold the game). Play with the alarm countdown, but rather than losing turns, just change when the alarm goes off. Or in other words, you always have X turns, but how many are silent and how many are alarm, might vary.

I agree that the Vril Mechanicics too tough. Having a 33 % chance of a weapon jamming is huge. I don't understand the issues folks have with the noise mechanic. You roll some white dice after an action; so what? The rulebook could be much better. I'm sure playtesters never were left alone trying to figure things out just with the rulebook for guidance. As for the loot issue: this is not a dungeon crawler in which you collect lots of items or level up. Picking up items is risky because of Noise in Pre-Alarm, less so in Post-Alarm as noise of "1" is treated as "0". Loot cards instead of loot tokens? I do not see any real advantage. Fake variety? No. Some Actions like moving and attacking are useful to all heroes, so why not include these options in each deck? I have played this game at least 20 times now and I can confirm that each hero plays fundimentally different. Also just as a reminder: there is an Enemy Action Phase after a hero's turn, so you have four enemy Action phases per round. So you do not Always get the Chance to kill all enemys before they can react.Things can get dangerous and out of hand very quick. Raid missions are very hard to win. It's not a co-op which you win often. Can't say anything re. the campaign as I haven't played it yet. Just my five cents...🙂
@arthurdent9281

I've recently been playing Arcadia Quest Inferno, and it has the same issue with loot tokens. So does Clank! Using generic loot tokens on the board , and drawing the item token or card would be much easier to set up. All of it would be easier to set up if they had made a decent storage insert for it.
@TheKingofAverage
4 жыл бұрын
The so what is it's not just "roll some dice" it's "make an action, roll some dice, draw a card, roll more dice, nothing happened." Then "make another action , roll some dice, draw a card, roll some more dice, nothing happened." Followed by "make another action, roll some dice, draw a card, roll some more dice, a room no one cares about is now suspicious." Fake variety as in there are really a combination of the following: 2 very unique cards and then the rest are one of a group of cards depending on the team role filled. So when you see 3 damage dealers like that you'll see repeated cards with nothing but a name change. I agree there's variety overall, but it's a pet peeve of mine to change a name and pretend it's not just two copies of the exact same card. A quirk of mine perhaps, but I notice every time I see it in a game and it bothers me every time. I have no issues with repeated cards, just the name change. We tend to play pretty slow so we often win on the last or second to last round, but it means we normally have plenty of saved up cards to wipe an area clear on just their turn so I don't roll defense too much but you are very right, in fact I forgot that rule on my very first playthrough (where enemies act 4x as fast as the heroes).

"The rulebook could be much better. Well of course they say that :P I'm concerned as well, and it's mainly why I won't be backing Hel. So far they've delivered Mythic Battles Pantheon which needed a 1.5 from Monolith replacing almost all hero cards and updating many missions that were fundamentally broken to get acceptable, Joan of Arc which is the single worst I've seen in this regard with impossible map and unit setups that didn't match your components at all, to now Reichbusters that continues to have other languages mixed in with the English components, incorrect art all around and a very lackluster rulebook. I hope Solomon Kane is better, but they aren't willing to delivery that first to prove it is and so I won't be backing Hel because I honestly have very little hope the printed material (more in Hel than any of their other games) will be better. I hope it is, but not putting in more than a dollar until they deliver at least 1 game that works in this regard.

All of their games have so much potential, and a great foundation but so far all of them have had drastic print issues and just a few months of development time cut short. My copy of Joan of Arc, which I liked, has been shelved after too many broken scenarios, waiting on the 1.5 fixes to hopefully get it played again. It was very odd to get Wave 2, unbox it and then put it on the shelf with no intention of playing O.o

I skipped this KS because the noise mechanism felt repetitive and taking too much of a role (I mean if you're main mechanism is stealth, then make it better). I'm glad I did, since they didn't seem to improve much of it.

I almost pulled the trigger on this during the campaign, but after watching a couple of (paid) playthroughs, something just seemed off. Then I realized it was the noise mechanic combined with the alarm. Almost all the specilaists would be terrible on these missions, and it just seemed like a pre play puzzle. Wish I had realized that when I backed Batman GCC form Monoilth. Any game where you can lose it in the planning stage and not realize till hours later...wasted money and opportunity like this looked.

House ruling the dice effectively changes the game to something else. If it turns into room and sweep their are other less expensive games that do that without house rules. The problem is supporting a game for what it can be rather than what it is sends a very bad message.
@TheKingofAverage

I'd say the game is (or at least shouldn't) be defined by the noise roll. Changing how often you roll the dice isn't fundamentally changing anything except my enjoyment of the product since the rolls rarely mattered to begin with :D I agree totally with your last statement though! If I had been able to review this during the KS I'd have stated to only back it if they update those rules beforehand (their errata is already changing the rules here) or if you are okay with playing in spite of them :)

*shrug* I'd have to read the rulebook again for the item. I did it once, it got jammed again and simply never used that character again. That being said, I doubt it means both don't discord the item or use an action at all, in that case it's rather pointless to do it, might as well say "if you have an orb then just take a wound on surges". There'd also be little point in having half of the loot items for that category be orbs except to up your chances. You'd end up with a lot of unneeded ones :)

Hey thanks for doing the review. I know so many people were excited for this game and it's disappointing to hear about all the problems. I know there is supposed to be a season 2 of this game and I keep wondering if is worth keeping the game around in the hope that things will be improved enough. I am wondering if Mythic will do some kind of 1.5 campaign like with Joan of Arc, promising refined rules and nicely printed replacement items as well as an actual storage solution (I hate hate hate the boxes for Reichbusters). Unfortunately it seems like with a Mythic game you are waiting and waiting for a project to deliver only to have to wait and wait more for a second project to possibly fix the problems of the first. I think I owe it to myself to play through the game considering I paid so much and there are fun times in there. I will probably house rule out rolling noise for picking up items. How they thought trained stealth operatives and heroic soldiers weren't capable of reaching down and picking something up quietly or opening a box was a good idea boggles my mind. Also every time I open up a new game and see an index or not in the rulebook I think "Oh KoA would be happy (or not) about this."

Yeah, I definitely like the game, but it was so absurdly lacking in polish. Here are a few things I am looking out house ruling once I am able to play the game more regularly: - Vril Weapons only lose their vril dice when they overload, but still can be shot with their normal attack dice. - Single Noise Dice rolls are ignored. - Wild Heroics can be used to ignore a noise roll. Assuming they do go forward with the franchise they would need at least a few of the following changes for me to buy in: - Updated rulebooks and components for the previous content. - Items are changed to cards (maybe a Vril deck and a regular item deck) - More interaction with the noise dice system, such as adding a stealth heroic token. - Better/more rewarding map design. - Letting you do a single noise test to reveal all items on a tile and pick up as many items as you like as part of the action. - Reduce the amount of arbitrary noise dice rolls. - Possibly redo the noise system into a chart, so you know what you get when you've rolled it and you can discuss with your team whether you want to spend some kind of resources on mitigating it. You can have certain thresholds of noise where you have to roll another noise die, or if you roll even higher you make a room suspicious, the next level you make a suspicious into an alert, higher and you spawn a low level patrol, even higher and raise the alarm level etc. This all can be on one, handy little reference card instead of laid out in a fiddly, overly-randomized deck. - I would like to see the ability to interact with the alarm level, like using broadcasting equipment in a radio room to throw off the Nazi response or other forms of midsirection. While I'm overally disappointed with the game, I still enjoy what is unique about it enough (I've been wanting more card driven player mechanics a la Spirit Island in co-op games) that I will try to make it work while they hopefully re-evaluate the game. However, id they push forward without fixing any of the problems I will probably just dump the game and never buy from Mythic Games again. The biggest shame of all is this makes me real nervous about Hel is going to turn out since I've been wanting a survival/settlement building campaign, and the Norse-horror elements were right up my alley. Guess we'll just have to wait and see tomorrow
@Phalanx167

@Transcendence Zen I completely agree that you shouldn't have to do the work for the devs, and that isn't the ideal role of house ruling. The ideal role is to make a game already to your play group's linking even more so. It's not as if devs can be make a game that completely suites everyone's tastes all the time, so I think there is room to house rule things here and there or ignore certain minor or optional game modules. For example my friends and I love to play Everdell with all the expansion mixed in, even though that is not recommended. We also like to play Deep Madness without the random devoured tokens since they were just a pain to remember. I've even heard of heretics, I mean good and decent people, play Spirit Island's Branch and Claw expansions without the Event Deck even though I feel it is integral. The thing is if you have to house rule the game to make it enjoyable or playable at all, yea, get rid of that sucker; but if it just takes a few tweaks to enhance a game that you already mostly enjoy, then by all means, it's your plastic and cardboard that you paid a ton of money for. The only game that I kickstarted that I have personally felt burnt by and I invested a decent-ish bit of money was Massive Darkness, but I was okay taking the risk in the end because I just plundered its minis for RPGs and Skirmish games and have never looked back at the board game itself. I did however feel underwhelmed by the Arkham Horror card game which I bought two starters and an expansion for, but I just turned around and sold it instead of stewing in sunk-cost fallacies. Even if Reichbustsers is just "kernels of enjoyment to you," get rid of it. There is probably not enough good in it for you to work with to make it worth your time.

Yep, do what sells, and if that means jumping on a popular style then people turn a blind eye to the obvious issues. The latest Super Fantasy Brawl actually TOOK OUT the index that was there. This is with people literally begging, saying they'll even make the index for them. I backed it before watching this video. Now I'm reconsidering. I thought much of the negativity on BGG might be exaggerated but holy shit. If ITEM CARDS are too difficult for MG to figure out, if LOOKING AT YOUR GAME BEFORE YOU GO TO MASS PRODUCTION is a corner you need to cut, if providing literally any storage solution beyond the game box is breaking your bank or timetable, if you have useless - or even worse, self-defeating mechanics...I don't know what to say. But it's nothing good about a company making the decision to ship the game anyway. I think HEL needs a lot of elegance and a lot of professional development to be a fun game. I'll reconsider my pledge with my eyes open that I should expect less than average development efforts. I'm worried now that some of these mechanics in HEL that sound intriguing together may have just been picked out of a hat, like simplified combat paired with tactics-driven AI. Will that just be meaningless? Will lighting the campfire accidently dominate the gameplay and become a meme?

Cthulhu, Death May Die is a better system than this while I would've preferred this theme if it was a better game. Great job with the review, you're the authority on mini-heavy games. I've been a big fan of these types of games for some time now but it seems that ultimately most of these are disappointments. Oh and yes, the Vril items were just stupid as hell. Waste of time and effort.
@TheKingofAverage

Totally agreed! Having a bad roll for a vril weapon cost you at minimum the action to loot an orb, action to unjam, the empty item space for the orb and a wound for 2 more dice is a joke. And I've done all that and then jammed it again the very next attack. Garbage game mechanic. I honestly think they stopped development only part way through. Normally once you get to this point you decide what's working and what's not and then trim out what's not and enhance what is. They missed that step here and it robbed them from having a truly incredibly game. In the end the action card system along with houserules (surge result for me now just gives a wound and a normal jam) make it enjoyable and I still plan to finally finish the campaign, but disappointing that I even have to do that. oneanotherstudios - typically I don't like reviewing reviews. But this one kinda felt a little overly harsh. No opinion are opinions, but I feel some of these made are straight up nit picking. While I agree the rule book needs tweaking in parts, I only feel the major area of improvement would be an index. The review to me felt as if he doesn't read many rule books often. The core book in my opinion is to explain core concepts, and that only. He complains about key words, they aren't found in the core book in my "opinion" because it would explode the basic ruleset into something unruly with keywords that may never come up if you don't play a particular character or a specific mission or a combo of the two. 10:50 he doesn't like that how to set up for the mission is in the mission book? I get that he'd like that in the core book, but is it a rule? No, it's not, it's how to get started in a campaign mission or raid mission which is in the mission book...where you also find the missions. Now if you never had to open the mission book, and this was left out, I'd see your point, but it's a must read like the core rule book, so I like that it's spaced out. I didn't understand the complaining about keywords like Guard Point and Escort, vs. the ruleset on getting captured. Being captured is a core rule, and it's how you lose technically, other than just not making it out on time with the objective. (so two major ways of losing I guess). But to compare this to Escort...a rule that won't come up if you don't play the escort mission...I don't think that's a fair comparison on what should be in the main ruleset and what should be in Keywords. I feel the layout is just find...hell it's in alphabetical order...how much spoon feeding do you need. Guard point has an image and a reference page for more robust rules....so nah fail point on that one. I also have to agree with Jmaeta here on the Noise component. This in my opinion is a major aspect of the game, and to flat out not like it....thats an issue for me. He doesn't understand why he rolls dice so often, and then proceeds to explain at 30:26 why he avoids picking up loot, cuz he doesn't want to risk running into a patrol. Boom! That explains the noise dice. It's a risk/reward option for making noise, even minor noise. Now while I do wish there was more variety in the punishment, I do feel this is a pivotal aspect of the game that shouldn't be "house" ruled, simply because you are a god at rolling dice and nothing ever happens when you roll them. I've played a game this past weekend where two noise dice turned into 18 noise in total, to each their own here...but to call it stupid, yeah no on that one...again nit picking in my opinion. Loot has been fixed in the recent errata, at least the search feature. so I can't speak on that as it's no longer current with the ruleset. I disagree however that making the tokens cards would be better. That's 97 more cards, not including the "Not of this Earth" expansion. 97! In his own game he doesn't like pickup up loot, and others may not either...so to create additional cards for a mechanic where you just have to look up the rule once or twice till you get familiar is a little extreme. I've played through a few times now, and other than really obscure tokens, I've kinda memorized what they each do, or again....may never come into play because they just aren't used...so cards I feel would be a fail. There are enough cards in this game as is. Major points, I agree polish was needed, between the day 1 FAQ/ERRATA fixing major mistakes on cards and the rulebook. Double noting tiles on the map, or straight up flipping the art work is an issue. One that Mythic has addressed and hopefully will fix soon with replacement components. However, gameplay and concept this game to me is a home run. I loved Space Hulk...now you wanna give me Space Hulk with Nazis, Zombies, and Aliens...I'm in. Noise is fun, character cards are fun, the mission layout is amazing, and deployability is there with the Raid style, Character Abundance, and friends.

@Grant - I actually take a bit of offense that you'd suggest I review a game actually playing the game or understand it (like this is some elevated game peasants wouldn't "get"). I'll go point by point: I read a ton of rulebooks, and most are pretty crap. The layout is just plain bad in this one. Gameplay mechanics explained in the section titled Keywords? Please. That wouldn't have even gotten me a D in Technical Writing. I don't like spreading rules across two books because then I have to have both out on the table for rule lookup for the first few missions. It can also lead to trying to look it up in one just to find out it was in another (for instance the rule that tripped Zee up was directly caused by this. The room cards are described in the "Rulebook" and the omission of them in the campaign scenarios is in the other book, so when he went to look it up in the "rulebook" to answer his question, he couldn't find it. Hard to argue with actual examples of it causing issues with players. Alphabetical order doesn't help when what is and is not a keyword is arbitrarily decided. Adjacent won't show up there so it's not a "key" word then? I can hardly believe anyone can talk themselves into thinking that rules should be defined in a section titled "Keywords". Please don't ever write a rulebook. For noise, if i as a player (again I can't review it based on your gameplay) roll these dice, usually 1 or 2 and most of the time it's a waste of time then it's poorly implemented. I am FINE with the concept of noise and randomly having something happen (though I caution against the double random of dice + card draw) but to make it so involved (roll dice, draw card, roll more dice) and so often where normally (even marginally) nothing happens isn't good design IMO. And I won't even go into how paper thin the "theme" of noise is in the game. And yes it's a nit pick. You watched a review that's almost an hour long, did you expect me to just speak on high level stuff like other reviewers? People watch my reviews because I am so detail oriented. They aren't for everyone and I understand that and am okay with that. Errata for every single other game I own only helps describe grey areas, poor wording or incorrect images. Their errata is already rewriting entire rules. As with JoA, and Mythic Battles, their two other games delivered, waiting for the 1.5 is the way to go after the 1.0 backers finish testing the rules for them. Not sure why 97 cards = bad but 97 tokens = good. They don't store nearly as well, are harder to place randomly/secretly, and can hold almost no information. Incidently you are the first person (out of quite a few) to say this is a bad idea. You must hate the majority of games out there if you dislike cards with information, or cards for equipment/items. That's literally the industry standard and it didn't get that way because they aren't as good as tiny tokens. In the end it's fine to disagree on things. But just because you don't agree with my opinions doesn't take anything away from them, or my review. If you want to review the game review it. If you want to review me then that's fine too, but you gotta explain it better. How are item cards bad but character cards good? How are rules in the keywords section good? How are patrols already on the map not reacting to grenades being thrown good into the same room as them good? How is a rulebook layout so bad that it caused Mythic to get a very negative review from The Dice Tower a good move? Perhaps you aren't used to reviews or providing your opinions, but explanations really matter. It's part of why my videos are so long, so hopefully I strike a good balance of providing examples of why I feel the way that I do without just talking about it to death. A hard line to get right 100% of the time but I do try. @Jmaeta Hah! You are obviously new here. I LOVE rolling dice, but I want that to be impactful. Rolling dice to draw a card and find out nothing happens is a waste of my time. I don't roll dice randomly outside of a game just for funsies, why would I want to do so in a game? As for the video, that was odd for sure, never done that before or since. Only noticed when editing sadly. What didn't I understand about the characters? I thought they worked really well and labeled it as a positive...

Its actually quite fun. The rulebook and printed components are annoying, but once you start playing there are some truly epic and cool moments. It is also somewhat challenging, which is nice

Wow! So much of this vid is a “what NOT to do when producing a board game” It’s redeeming that as cumbersome the game is and how rulebook dependent gameplay seems (and how poorly designed the rulebook is) tat you mention that you like this game. If you intend on making ‘games,’ take these billet points to heart... if not, take Zee Garcia’s advice and stick to making minis and be a toy company... I was wondering if Zee was unfair in his assessment of this game. Nice to hear someone else say much of the same...

I think Zee was unfair just in that he seemed to fundamentally have an issue with the game being big and expansive (or at least, failed to really convey why he felt that) so hopefully I shed some light onto that :)
