The best part is being able to remove the trunk rack very easily if i wanted to access the outter lid for things like waxing. I can easily remove the 4 bolts without even having to drop the inner trunk liner.

100% correct and articulated perfectly. Trunk racks are limited load capacity in the OEM state. Very nice job Chris. Pro as always.

Hi Chris. Very interesting but when you put weight on the rack, the force pushes the rack down, still making possible to crack the trunk. In my opinion to make sure that the trunk is not going to crack, you will need to reinforce the area underneath where the rack seats with fiberglass for example and outside you will need to have a wide type of washer for each leg of the rack, to increase the area of contact and to spread the force.

On the top side of the trunk on top the painted surface is a large rubber gasket underneath the chrome riser, no trunks racks are mounted metal to fiberglass without rubber gasket or rubber washers, unfortunately my video doesn’t show it but believe me the rubber cushion is already there on the outside.

I recomend buying some abs plastic and black abs glue. You can then use a doorknob hole saw to cut a disk from the plastic and it will already have a center hole. Glue the disk to the underside of the trunk and use washers as you indicated. The black abs glue will chemically melt the plastic together and it is much lighter than running a piece across the whole lid which creates it's own set of issues. You will have to trim, a flat spot on the front disks since they sit too close to the front of the lid. You can also add decorative pieces to the top if desired.

Post a video link showing us exactly how you would do it, that would be interesting.

I just got a rack like this and it came with 1 3/4" screws. I would much rather do it like this and drill thru the liner too (instead of removing the liner & mounting it to the trunk lid). My concern is the gap between the lid and the liner...is there no spacer or anything needed there?

Hi Chris I live in Ireland and it’s causing me sleepless nights trying to decide the 2017 or the 2021 I had a 2001 yellow GW and loved it. I bought it in NY at Hollinks MS and I’d just like your opinion on them Kind regards Pierce

Is there a gap between the outer and inner lid? If so, shouldn't there be a spacer between the two?

Exactly Without filling that gap ¨the void¨between outer and inner lid with solid material this did mod did nothing. All the weight from luggage rack is carried ONLY by the outer shell. I found the gap to 1/4 of and inch. I used neoprene pads used for furniture legs that were self stick, it took two per bolt, now the weight is transfered onto the inner liner and the top is well supported as well.

Chris, are you not going to pull your trailer as much since you now have a luggage bag?

LOL. The luggage bag was given to me as a gift by a very generous biker name Double D.
