No one can convince me that this position needed six rounds of interviews. Employers are committed to wasting our time!
@dertbom
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to convince you, as I tend to agree with you, but maybe that's a number Google is comfortable with for its business. I can imagine a designer may have to work across many of Google's products, more than six times, and in a variety of roles. I'm not here to defend it, but just trying to understand it. I think once you look at it that way, then it's nothing because that is something you should be able to do in the job anyway. You should be able to be consistent, and even convince the toughest of your critics. I know it sucks, but think of it as proving to them you can do it.

Honestly, it's RIDICULOUS to waste a candidate's time like that. I think it should be illegal to do more than 3 interviews. After 3, they should have to PAY for your time. Period.

I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. As great as Google is, you were meant to grow somewhere else! That doesn't mean you can't come back in a few years to apply with Google again. On a positive note, you went through the interview stages for Google and learned so much! That alone is such an accomplishment because that means they saw your potential.

I just want to tell you that with my own experience, friends I referred(all super good designers), and all those great candidates I have talked with, there is not much mystery in the hiring process: sometime people who got in were just luckier. In fact, It's so inspiring to watch you talking to a camera, sharing your own experience, helping strangers online, and GOD I LOVE YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR, one day you will get in and any team would be lucky to have you. Cheers! (p.s. If you want to add another internal referrer next time, hit me a message. :)

I can definitely relate to your story. I only have a High school diploma and zero work experience in UX/UI design. Whenever I apply for jobs it's like 10x harder because I'm competing with people that have bachelor's degree. I decided to lock myself in a room for 7 months around the height of the pandemic in March 2020 so I can focus on Google UX/UI Certificate and building out my portfolio. Spend around 10 hours a day, looking back I would not recommend it. After I finished my portfolio, I sent out my application to 100s companies and manage to get 2 interviews just like you. (haha) First one got rejected, second one I manage to make it to the final round. keep in mind I'm competing against 40 people that have a bachelor's degree, final round was a take-home design assessment. I got a final email the next day, thinking I definitely got rejected but the title of the email says "Congrats! We would like to extend you an offer.." I still have tears in my eyes thinking about it, living the American Dreams.

Analysts, data science, you name it there is apparently so many open positions and the field will never stop growing but I don’t think that’s the case at all. 100 apps to get one interview is not normal or ok. Hi Aliena, thank you so much for sharing your experience and feelings in this video. I have went through the similar seeking work experience and got rejected from my favorite company too. I was very discouraged after the rejection and lost my motivation and hope in job hunting. After watched your video, I got inspired and I very agree that we shouldn't give up and shouldn't keep our personal life waiting till we get a job. Thank you so much for sharing and good luck in finding a dream job😀

Thank you for your video always being full of good statements and reviews. I know how hard it is to go back to the heartbreak moments to thinking what happens back then, and what your feelings were. Even hard to tell it out loud and give others advice.

Thanks for sharing this honest story , I guess is so hard for everyone to get rejected after trying so hard and specially daydreaming about a new life with a dreamed role . It’s brave to share this story because most people want to show only the bright side of their career . Thanks for the insight about this process so cool

I stay at home mom for 9 years and you are right, that no feedbacks of what you doing every day. I can not imagine how many applications I have to apply to find any job qualified to my skills, however I see the difference to be useful to my family or be useful for multimillion corporations. This is a breakpoint, for my brain doesn't metter what kind of problem to solve: to work for somebody or creat own business, in both ways the problem will be solved, but second one more satisfied that I did it for myself. Through any education we were trained to be good employee but not entrepreneur. We trained to bring corporations dreams to come true, not ours. Your advise so true, even you are seeking job full-time do not forget about yourself.

I completely agree! And I don't see there's anything you can't achieve given that you already worked for the hardest job as being a mom.

The employment process is actually ridiculous, ESPECIALLY through recruiters - I'm surprised they didn't just ghost you like they usually do. The truth is you just have to become as self sufficient as possible and don't rely on the approval of gate keepers.

Please keep journaling, I actually am a person who truly get enraged at those click bits of people reaching their dreams and goals in absurd happiness contexts,... like they have it all figured out. that formula got realllllll unpopular quick. your approach is humane, while giving insights and actually having something to teach. so there you go, you've actually created a The mini course for the hypervigilent yet grounded Career seeker. thank you for the honest content.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! So helpful & valuable! First off - what I'd recommend to you: try applying again! Even Google itself writes on its careers page that many Googlers didn't get in on their first try! Since you came pretty far on even the first attempt, why shouldn't you make it with more experience? Second, as I am also (like thousands of other designers I guess) dreaming of working at Google one day - I find it quite difficult to get Googlers to respond - I mean they probably get a message asking a favor of them every day or more. Do you have some tips on how to successfully get a connection established?
@AlienaCai
Жыл бұрын
Thank you so so much for your response. My tip for getting Googler to reply is to make more friends in the tech industry, and you'll become friend with a Googler soon.
