Awesome information! I have been doing research and you are correct no one has a good tutorial on how to tidy the plants as they go dormant. i am definitely going to start pulling leaves and stems out and no more cutting.

I've split my streps like you would primulas so it's a sort of tidy up come propogation! I would probably carry out your routine a day or two after watering, so you're not having to water them while they still have unhealed wounds. I suggest this as a precaution just to avoid disease or rot affecting them although, to be honest, they are pretty robust!

Yeah that's a great way of propagating at the same time as rejuvenating your old ones. You know I'm not the best what with plant hygiene! I have to keep reminding folks that those habits don't carry through to personal hygiene...🤣

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I think my plant hygiene is directly proportional to how much time I have and how much I can be bothered but like you I do wash myself occasionally! 🤣 😂

Mine seem to flop no matter what - I’ve lost so many! Over watering / underwatering - I just can’t seem to get it right! But I will continue to persevere. Thanks for the video.

Hi Helen. Just a thought. When watering Streps they are usually happy with staying on the drier side - then when the top compost is dry, just water enough to wet the top couple of centimetres - not loads so that they leak out of the bottom. That should prevent over watering. Obviously to prevent under-watering just keep feeling the leaves and as soon as they lose turgidity give them some water. Hope that helps!

@@Grow_Up_Man55 thank you for the advice - I’ve probably lost just as many underwatering as I’m so worried about overwatering… ! but yours look so happy so I will maybe try to keep a closer eye on them - thanks again.

Thank you for the video! I'm new to plant ownership and purchased a streptocarpus at a greenhouse, and I wonder: what's the best way to remove flowers that are done blooming, do like you did and remove the whole stem, or pinch off the flower? If pinching, WHERE exactly do I pinch? Perhaps a video on this if you haven't already? I purchased in late Feb and it is just starting its blooming/nondormant phase as I am thinking. Thank you!

Best to remove as much of the flowering stalks as possible by snipping them at the base. Leaving them on and pinching just the bloom off will be fine - it won't harm the plant - but the old flower stalks turn very woody and look unsightly when you build quite a number of them up. Sooner or later they'll have to come off.

Hi Geoff! Good video! I'm back to growing streps again. Got 4 of them about a month ago. I used to grow them many, many years ago. Wish I could find Crystal ice here in America. Cheers and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Great news you're giving them another go. They're so rewarding and there's a never ending supply of brilliant new hybrids every year. You need a Dibley's!

Hello-thank you for sharing your streptocarpus knowledge. Any suggestions for powdery mildew? I pull off the leaves with it. The new leaves grow looking great and all of a sudden have it too. I have a small fan nearby circulating air. I don’t understand why it won’t go away. It’s only on 2 of my streps. Thanks for any advice!

Sorry for the slight delay. It's all about air movement and reducing humidity for powdery mildew - which can be done by increasing temp and/or increasing the fan strength. After that you'll just have to keep removing the infected leaves. Perhaps try an anti fungal spray too. Good luck!

Im trying to understand bloom induction in streptocarpus. I had a great bloom in September (central US) in plant in east window but now nothing. I read they are short day plants so now, under lights, i cut the light to 12 hrs. After three weeks, no change. It is a bit pot bound but after seeing this video im going to wait a year to repot and divide. Is it just dormant or what? I thought they bloomed pretty much continuously like african violets. Good video!

Streptocarpus do have an off season - so will need a non-flowering rest period - but they'll still keep their leaves - they'll just stop growing for a while. During that period I wouldn't bother with grow-lights, and only water sparingly. Once spring comes, increase the light, the temperature (to 12°C to 20°C) and the watering. You can also feed them unless they've been repotted. There are some hybrids that'll bloom for 10 months but even they need a rest I've found. Few know as much about growing Streps as Dibley's - a specialist nursery in Wales - here's their link: www.dibleys-shop.com/pages/about-streptocarpus-plants
