Drugs and rock and roll! Outrageous. I believe we were all looking forward to you putting 9 million sockets in the nucleon ?

Nice, I usually remove the 7805, clean underneath and lightly sand down the surface of the aluminium heatsink to shiny metal, apply a tiny tab of thermal compound, and reinstall the 7805. I find that although not essential in a Toastrack, this significantly improves the cooling of the regulator.

For the voltage regulator i use RS part number 193-4015. You can then remove the heatsink completely (on the rubber key versions). It vastly reduces the temperature inside case and reduces the stress on every other component as a result. 👍

I'm on the fence about this because I like the weight and the warmth of 7805 and heatsink it feels authentic!

@@HappyLittleDiodes It certainly does - you're correct about that. But for me, I'd prefer to protect that ULA which boils along all by itself. It also protects the electrolytic caps (they're temperature rated) and the keyboard membrane. Of course, it depends how much they are going to actually be used in real life. Back when I was a kid my Speccy would easily be powered up for 12 hours at a time - maybe even more. These days, I'd be more likely to fire him up for half an hour to blast some Mainc Miner (the best game ever written!). Really enjoy your channel. Your channel and More Fun Making It are my faves! 👍

Great video! I just saw today that Zilog have just announced the withdrawal of the ubiquitous Z80 after 48 years in production! 😢

Nice. A couple of questions ... 1. Why does the EPROM need a sticker? 2. What's the danger of putting the board in a vice? Does flexing the board not cause issues? A final weird one ... what do you do with the legs you snip from the components? Do they have any use at all? I'm not a fan of waste.🙄

The EEPROMs with a window are designed to be wiped clear by UV light. So it they are left exposed they can lose data. I find as long as you are careful the board won't flex any more than normal. Obviously you have to be careful not to over tighten it though!

Where did you get the new sticker from? I need a replacement for my toastrack. I was thinking of removing one from a spare 48K+, but I would rather not do that!
