Another is ‘evevn if it’s not OK it will be OK.’ Sml but with some focused breathing and closed eyes it helped. Also if needed find a bathroom and sit for few min alone to do them. With time you can do it in crowded areas. When we get through tougher times or memories it leaves us stronger and with more self respect and awareness. Life is hard and you’re not alone by far.✌️

THANK YOU, DR. SNIPES! I think you may have guided me to finding my healing. After decades of therapy, where CBT helped me make rational decisions, I've still experienced physical symptoms that I've described to people "It's like my body is in permanent lock down, it's ALWAYS wired, even when I'm outwardly relaxed and happy. Could the childhood trauma of 60 years ago still be in my body?" And then I saw your title, and that is the first time that I've ever even had someone validate the possibility of chronic embodied trauma. I look forward to watching your videos, and look forward to getting clues that might help find an appropriate professional I can directly work with.

Just stumbled across you. Keep doing what you do!! I wasn't taught any of this. I have no doubt you are going to be the one who actually helps me. I have lived a very traumatic life. My body now handles my fear and worries by attacking itself in odd and strange ways. No way any doctor can explain. I have learned my body does this when I'm under stress from my traumas. I have done everything to help myself but I havnt learned how to release, realize or relax. I'm going to watch you, I know your going to make a difference in my life. ♥

Thank you for sharing your own personal experience with trauma and how you’ve managed it. Many lecturers can come across as a tad condescending and paternalistic but you’ve detailed some very helpful and empowering strategies here. People might also find it useful to look at the enteric nervous system and how this relates to trauma-related anxiety. It’s essentially a second brain in the gut. See also gut-brain axis. Totally agree with your advice: i) to do yoga. Been doing Iyengar for years and it works. Journaling might also be useful for some people as it’s an easy way to review your progress and identify who your triggers are. ii) definitely yes to finding opportunities to laugh/sing if at all possible. That might well sound impossible for some who find themselves “locked-in” to ruminations about their traumatic event/incident. Everyone is different but it’s vital to give yourself a break even if it’s only momentarily.

I didn't get on with the Wim Hof breath - not because it wasn't effective, but because the sensation of activating the stress response was not something I could push myself to do every day - despite the benefits I felt after. Years of being in a severely hypervigilant state led me towards more gentle methods. The cold showers, however... I started them again a couple of weeks ago, starting with hot water and then turning it to cold. Now I look forward to having a full shower starting with cold. It's the weirdest thing. Initially I had to mentally prepare for it, then realised the sensation was exactly the same as the excitement of being dared to run under a waterfall when travelling, and so I began to dare myself and laugh in anticipation of my response. But I agree, Wim Hof's techniques are very transformative!

What a treasure of a toolbox you shared with us! Thank you. I really can't thank you enough. Already I feel calmer - simply from learning these tools. My future looks brighter because I don't have to worry about triggers and the sense of helplessness they can elicit. Also, I don't have to worry so much about people who can't afford or in any way access a good therapist, because anyone with internet (which, of course, is not everyone,) can watch your videos. Fortunately, I have a truly awesome therapist even though I'm a low income person. But I know my case is more an exception than the rule. God bless you!

I really like how you summed up what we were learning about at the end. When teachers leave something open-ended, I often don't get what they are talking about to bring everything together. I understand what people are saying by what they say afterward because it brings together a collection of thoughts into a meeting of the minds that is satisfying and becomes a positive learning experience. I get the feeling that the teacher is intending to empower me with the experience and I relax and am able to enjoy the subject matter. Bad teacher move too fast and do not care about my struggle. But that is not you! Instead you are a good role model. It is like the good mother who does back and forth with a small child who enjoys the interaction. I forget what that is but you probably know a lot more about that than I do. I could also read parenting books about it. Adults still want to do that as learning is very much of an interaction with a caring attachment figure who sees and responds to you as a person.

Great Videos Doc Snipes. Asa 72 YO, Male, now retired, I have been anxious person for as long as I can remember. Starting with nail biting at age 7 or so, which evolved into anticipatory anxiety (like looking at my watch as e approached the end of the school day - in the 3rd Grade), and then evolved into full blown Panic/Anxiety Attacks circa 1986 (after the birth of our second child). A few years before (while my wife was pregnant with our first child in 1982) I started to experience "heart Palpitations" / Stomach issues of Burping . etc.. After a series of tests were done including a GI series of the gut, nothing negative was found. When I asked my doctor - "What's the Story, Doc? He responded "Aren't you the fellow buying a house? . I said, No Doc, my wife is Pregnant!. he said.....That's Your problem !! Meaning, It's Your Nerves affecting your Stomach / Heart. He didn't talk about the Vagus Nerve. But the recent surfacing of the vast importance of the Vagus Nerve is fascinating and allows me to understand what is happening. I have had "traumas" in my childhood, too numerous to mention / dicuss here, but watcjhing this and other Psych vidoes helps me to more fully understand the impact of those traumas on my Well Being via the Vagus Nerve!

Thankfully, I am no longer in the situations that caused my anxiety issues and my lifestyle is generally very peaceful and I am healthy. But I still have occasional flashbacks or experience generalized anxiety - like fear of experiencing pain/anxiety as opposed to actually experiencing it. I managed to heal myself from horrific child abuse without the use of torturing animals. What is wrong with people, I find it utterly sickening that people who are allegedly healers relish torturing small furry animals. Just go to Brad Yates for emotional freedom technique EFT. He is a brilliant and generous and emotional freedom technique practitioner was over 600 videos to heal anything from emotional pain/anxiety, grief, shame and everything else without inflicting unnecessary, unscientific torture on innocent sentient beings. If we torture our own pets with gratuitous violence, we are imprisoned.. Why are there different rules for scientists in labs with white coats, behind closed doors inflicting horrific suffering. Doc Snipes, I have been monitoring heart rate dip during sleep, that is some how connected to vagus nerve and circadian rhythm. It occurs for about 20 minutes for me between 5am and 6:30am. I also monitor HRV with elite app to see parasympathetic and sympathetic balance. Can you make an educational video addressing these areas? There is no one in my area, that is into any of these things, that I can go to. Thanks

I have the same thing with masks and people’s intensity/fear and randomly attacking verbally and even physically for not wearing one. I’m thankful to honor my process and never wear one and still have to work through seeing people wearing them. Thx for sharing

It’s less about masks etc. They are symbols and tools for good and bad. Humanity’s biggest lesson is illusion of division fed for centuries and to respect freedom to choose (sovereignty) and think even/esp if we disagree. Compassion/cooperation vs judgement/competition. We share ~98-99% DNA and must learn to get along to survive. ✌️

I m gaining so much invaluable help from your videos.,having been through acute burnout that urged me to take the very huge decision of quitting my job, though I continued in the afternoons ,as I cdnt cope with mornings ,to work privately. I'm still struggling and wondering if I'm ever going to recover from my layers of trauma before I die .

Try playing a French horn if you want get some deep breathing. One thing anyone can do isa buy a brass mouthpiece [trumpet, French horn, trombone, etc.] and put to lips and buzz lips to mouthpiece. It really stimulates a relaxation response, especially if you're highly anxious. The larger the mouthpiece,[trombone e.g.] the greater the relaxation response since it takes more deep breathing.

Thank you so much. One question, I can barely even lightly touch my tragus, it's extremely painful. It's been that way for over a year now. No doctor seems to know why. Could be coming from jaw joint? Does anyone else out there have this problem? Wishing everyone a calm and happy vagus nerve!

SO, normally my husband would never go to anyone that didn't have a true drs. License or title and would insist that the professionals rendering services must accept Insurance. However after 2 years of suffering with intense neck pain and dizziness, and trying "everything" which included a series of shots, chiropractic visits and even 2 small surgeries, he sought the help of a kinesologist. She worked with muscles , which support bones and he felt relief after the first visit! He followed up with 2 more visits and is virtually pain free currently. Don't be afraid to stop outside of your comfort area as he did through ultimate desperation. Good luck! 👍

Great video, I'll have to find the ones on the vagus nerve. But, these are good exercises to make habit. Hadn't heard of Probiotics either. Toolbox for improving my days so that as I encounter stressors, it's routine to do. Thank you for making this video.

Very helpful video, Dr Snipes! I'm currently in DBT but haven't as of yet anyway, learned or have been told of these techniques to calm the vagus nerve. I will definitely be implementing several of these. Oh, I grind my teeth too and awaiting my night guard ☺️

Dr. Snipes videos are very valuable to me professionally and personally and I so appreciate all of her efforts to educate us. It might be just me, but I must listen to these videos in short doses as it seems the microphone might be too sensitive. It appears to pick up just about every sound near Dr. Snipes such as those from equipment and from Dr. Snipes shifting and even mouth sounds from her speaking. I’ve seen other creators deal w/ this so, maybe others have been bothered by this too & adjustments might be attempted? Otherwise, I will continue to watch in short sessions.

Hi Dr. Snipe. Thanks for your great videos. What neurologic conditions might render the vagal tone exercises less effective?

Can stress put a damper on my creativity? How do I work through having no creativity anymore? Is this about the inner child? I have yet to access the "Inner Child" stuff you linked me to so I will do that first. As long as I have no one pushing me, I can make my own decision and grow in my confidence and self and not just in knowledge.

I have past childhood trauma, and live with constant depression and Anxiety. I did a hair mineral test, that showing I have high toxins in the body. That and poor gut health. I don't even know how too heal! I got covid last December, and my mental health got worse. I'm so depressed and spend most day's crying in bed. I think my vagus nerve is badly damaged 😢 tried alot of these vagus nerve techniques, even brought a vagus nerve stimulation device. Literally become more suicidal after using it! Definitely believe trauma and toxins mess up the vagus nerve.

Thank you for these very nice tips. Is the reason the intention of releasing trauma has to do with activating the vegal nerve/tone, because that is how someone can feel safe enough to release it? Thank you. I hope that made sense!
