The strangest part may not be the notion of reincarnation, but the idea in our heads that we >each are the >only "begotten" one or whatever. Looking at the crowd of reborn prophets through the ages, why would any >one be so special and how could the others be proven wrong? As far as I know, most people are tentative, like... we all still wait on the revelation or whatever... Sigh, I just like to remember life on Earth is 3.8 billion years old. That is truly impressive.

As a christian who is a psych nurse, i can usually differentiate between really religious people vs religious delusions. A lot of times someone with religious delusions will say stuff that doesn't align with the Bible or something like "I'm Jesus" or some type of falsehood. While someone who is just really religious will coincide with the Bible because that is what they follow.

And if person's facebook is overloaded with religious stuff and reports he prays every day and calls for prayer is it healthy?

Talking in my mind like a storm of thought and reactionary rebuttals.. imagining my statements and others' responses, and my ongoing response. I wanted to communicate and gather attention. I was concerned about ecology, colonization, and other things I felt very little was getting talked about. That talking storm was probably my first symptom that I noticed "this isn't happening to other people" but I didn't know about SZ then. Eventually I read about it, and looked back at different moments: "yes, mm-hmm, yup! That was becoming schizophrenic."

I like what you said about materialism. We kind of need spirituality to balance the stark reality that is the world of science.

I'm an atheist and I trust science more than anything else but I feel like I have a tiny born again christian talking to me at all times. I know that the world is ancient, that evolution is a fact, and that christianity is essentially a brand new concept in the large scheme of things, but I have this part of me that somehow things that dinosaurs never existed and that everything is evil.... how do I put my mind back together?

The world of organized religion spends very little time not attempting to indoctrinate the masses by controlling culture, stories, and media. Whether there is something to "spiritual thinking" maybe, in English language and thought it's impossible not to judge most nouns as moving toward the light or damned and evil, as you mention. It's like pollution that says literally every day that dinosaurs never existed. That's 100% untrue though, while the brain insists.

@@nednednerb the issue with this particular flavor of delusional thinking is that most Americans are "passively" religious, so if you bring any of this up they always tell you that you've suddenly seen the light, despite having no insight into how mind-consuming a constant stream of religious thinking can be. I want to move somewhere more scientifically minded with more advanced theological concepts so that I can integrate the two together. Daoism and Buddhism to me are the most rational systems of irrational thinking.

How can I help someone that believes they are Jesus, waiting on earth for the rapture. The 'holy spirit' keeps telling this person I'm lying so they turn on me. I've tried saying just live in the day, tried kindness, tried calling doctors, tried being firm by saying "I'm not talking with you untill you stop accusing me of lying"

That's a tough one. Religious culture is often one of "my beliefs are true to me and if you argue at all or I feel you don't believe me it is injustice on your part"... That's really annoying because religion itself is more about cultural practice and the expression of group ceremony, than it is about "being right or wrong" about individual ideas. Religion sometimes is something people act as if they have an inalienable right to keep believing in something, so it's hard when someone delusional (or maybe deceitful, or violent) believes or expresses something which cannot be verified or disproven easily. Thus, I think with a person who might have schizophrenia symptoms, it can be really hard to convince a person you're not lying if they've determined you be doing so. I think it might be very very difficult to indicate to the person in a way that they would feel you believed and trusted them and that you were trustworthy. That aside, if a person wants to talk openly about something, they can do so. But if they are resistant, good luck getting through at all! Better to wait for another time. Human people in 2022 are very very resistant to persuasion. Everyone in common intellectual culture is "this is final proof, you are so wrong!!!!" It's harder for people to just talk openly and calmly. That's cultural. Part of a "liberal university education" is about learning to listen to and share ideas in a peaceful way. I got that in my philosophy Major at least. It is a bit different for the dynamic to involve a feeling or claim that "you are lying" cos that's more tense than just a belief-based disagreement. It's hard to control where you stay in a dynamic where the person might have totally delusional perceptions. In my experience, a belief can shift and fold in and out as needed, they are not ALL simply "fixed". Some things go back and forth quickly or slowly... If I had advice, it would be not to push on things hard, and consider to avoid the situation if it seems more stressful than beneficial for your friend and yourself, to be honest. Some relationships or periods of stress might make things tougher than with other people or times.
