ABOUT THIS VIDEO
During my 6 months stay in South Africa I got the opportunity to join Vincent van der Merwe on a trip to do some cheetah relocations within South Africa and to Mozambique.
Vincent coordinates the Cheetah Range Expansion Project for the Endangered Wildlife Trust .
To protect the animals, reserves in South Africa are fenced, meaning that animals like cheetahs are not able to move between remaining protected areas. To avoid inbreeding and grow a healthy and strong population of wild cheetahs it is necessary to relocate these cheetahs
This video is about the relocation of two male and two female cheetahs from South Africa to Karingani in Mozambique.
The male cheetahs came from Roam Private Game Reserve and were generously donated by andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa. The females came from Dinokeng Game Reserve.
Karingani has been restored and rejuvenated through holistic, landscape-level, science-driven management, and this ecological recovery has created 1,450 km2 of safe space for wild cheetah conservation.
Vincent van der Merwe (EWT) assessed Karingani and determined that it is now a safe space for a flourishing population of cheetahs and is ready for population reinforcement as part of the Endangered Wildlife Trusts Cheetah Range Expansion Project.
Cheetahs have been systematically eradicated from more than 90% of their historical range in Africa, and it only through collaborative conservation efforts like this that we are able to ensure a future for the world’s fastest land mammal.
