Relocating an ant colony to an artificial nest can be a delicate task that requires patience, but it offers ant enthusiasts a unique and up-close view of the social life of these fascinating creatures.
Ant relocations are truly fascinating. Watching how they communicate and organize themselves is truly incredible. Sometimes it takes them minutes, other times weeks, but it is always really interesting to observe.
In this video, I show you the arrival of the colony in a test tube and their subsequent relocation to a modular ant nest.
I hope you enjoy the video as much as we do, and if you do, leave us a like to let us know!
Greetings and thank you.
Messor barbarus ants are a common species in the Mediterranean region, ranging from Portugal and Morocco to Iran and Saudi Arabia. They are commonly known as harvester ants due to their feeding habits.
Here are some interesting characteristics and behaviors of Messor barbarus ants:
Size and color: These ants exhibit marked dimorphism, meaning there are differences in size and shape among different members of the colony. Workers vary in size, ranging from 3 mm to 14 mm, while queens can measure up to 16 mm. They are generally dark-colored, ranging from brown to black.
Diet: They are granivorous, meaning their primary diet consists of seeds that they collect and store in granaries within the nest. However, they can also consume dead insects.
Behavior: They are known for forming well-defined trails between their nest and food sources. They exhibit diurnal foraging behavior and are not particularly aggressive, although they can bite if they feel threatened.
Reproduction: The queen is the only ant in the colony that reproduces. After a nuptial flight, the queen loses her wings and starts a new colony.
Habitat: They prefer sandy and dry soils, often in open and sunny areas. They build underground nests that can be quite extensive, with a well-defined entrance that is often surrounded by a mound of soil.
Messor barbarus is a popular species among ant enthusiasts due to their relatively large size and interesting seed-harvesting behavior. Additionally, caring for them in an artificial nest is not particularly difficult, making them ideal for beginners.
