Here I am, in June 2024, loving this song as much now as I did when it was first released.

I remember where I was! 16 years old, in my mobster 66 Buick Electra (first car), on Interstate 5 headed for a road trip from Tacoma to Seattle, after leaving Tower Records, and slapping the cassette into my home stereo insall... I thought nothing could eclipse Gardening at Night...... I followed the band for a decade until Shiney Happy people and the rest of the pop crap.😅

@brad3706 Very unpopular opinion, but I really like Shiny Happy People. Probably for the same reason I like Me and Honey - Kate Pierson's awesome voice.

If you don't think Bill's playing has been missed, just check out these old videos REMchout has posted. His drumming was part of the greatness of early R.E.M.

I could listen to Dead Letter Office every day for the rest of my life. Especially the CD version, which has the Chronic Town EP songs .... but the first three albums, and headphones and drifting away sonically, into thee night ...how to get through decades of circumstantial misery without going crazy.

@AustinMark111 hey, now...I'm a vanguard gen-x'er. (born in '66). r.e.m is some of OUR music. began with them in 83 and was changed from there on out. now, genY, I'll give you that. But this was part of MY coming of age, and completely transforming for us.

The most recent album is a return to the energy of Life's Rich Pageant. Hiring on Bill Rieflin (another drummer named Bill) seems to have revitalized them to an astounding degree. If you ever loved them, I recommend giving it a listen...or just look up Living Well Is The Best Revenge, on here!

I think the connection betwen REM and Nirvana is pretty fucking thin, certainly in respect to REMS best stuff, which is the early stuff. When they turn it up and thrash they verge on pathetic. Chronic Town was so odd.....like Talking Heads 77 and this cut is gorgeous.

accelerate is fine...but it doesn't touch this stuff...it sounds like 'new adventures' era...with the exception of a couple of songs. The thing is, they didn't use a second guitar back then...and even though they were stripped down, they were more textured and artier...not just loud and fast, but simple and complex

Most alternative music these days is nothing but warmed over shite with obvious influences, sketchy musicianship and a deadening low key hipster vibe [ but not all, of course, Sun Kil Moon, Damien Jurado and a few others keep me from the ledge]. Early REM was original, strange in the best way and isnpired.

I adore that it sounds like most of the audience is listening to some small buzzy indie band from podunk Georgia and hasn't had all of their songs swimming through their ears for 30+ years. Polite applause, Moms and girlfriends probably cheering loudest. Catchy sure, but they aint no Lynrd Skynrd or REO Speedwagon. Nice effort kids! lol
