The problem with models is also the storage they need. Csgo’s file size has dramatically increased over the years due to more and more maps using unique models. Each model needs its own special textures, geometry, shaders, etc. you start to get a very bloated mess after a while. The one upside to source modding was being able to make complex maps and mods that are relatively small in file size but that seems to be almost lost now. I do hope valve can add some way of being able to either adjust the geometry and complexity of props yourself in the hammer editor or add tons of small props into the editor that we can use instead of props like the ones in ancient
@Derpy-qg9hn

This same trend seems to have consumed the entire games industry. I genuinely can't think of a single AAA release in the last four-or-so years that's less than 50gb in size, meanwhile CS:S and Day of Defeat Source are both right around the 4gb mark. If you want a game nowadays that doesn't devour your entire storage drive, you pretty much have to go indie or bust.
@CB66941

@@Derpy-qg9hn Ye old bsp method has unfortunately fallen out of favor with the modern gaming industry. Now bsp blocks are used for blocking a level (as in determining what a general level will look like, as in the whole level is made of devblocks) then it undergoes an artpass in which the whole level gets detailed with a tonne of high quality meshes and props, which is possible with the amount of people necessary to work in AAA industries. Bsp type games can be made with smaller teams by comparison, which is why Doom, Source and Goldsource are still favored by smaller or individual devs

Very true, and thats just what happens when you have to keep up with higher standards. Previously you were able to just combine low quality textures on walls (cs 1.6) and call it a day but now, you need to understand what country or location your map will take place in, the materials available to that region, the time line, make a backstory, understand architecture, study up on engineering, have a basic understanding of plumbing or electrical components, know about site planning, know of plant fauna or animal life, all whilst making the level compact, balanced, optimized, and fun.

With how things are in the source engine community and life itself, it’s hard to just be a independent mapper trying to make something fun or silly. It all has to be potentially profitable and competitive. It really feels like the days of fun, silly, joke, maps are long gone and the barrier for entry which was already high for the source engine due to its tools has only gotten higher and higher.

I don't think it is right to think that the old mapping style is being replaced by a less independent process that requires more time and a _higher bar_ . I think this is just a result of what is wanted from maps in this present day. Of course mapping was once an individual job because at the time with limitations of technology, all that could be done was possible to be completed by one person. Now technology allows for more realism based visuals, which valve has made their standard around. Maps want nice looking _graphix_ and that look requires detailed geometry and textures which happen to take more time to create and more specialized skills. Maps wanting more complex things cause this sense that to makke a good map these days would need a full team and thats just how it is because it's not common that people learn all of the skills (modeling, texturing, sound design etc.) so they can do it themself. There are people who learn all the traits that can make maps all by themselves though. So you are right that making a map at valve's level of polish would require more than one person and months of work but it isn't required to accomplish goals. I love making map mockups in hammer in my free time and the use of HL2s pre made assets were useful in each of those endeavors and when thinking of maps to make in my head, I do think about what specific prop from half life I would use to make that imagination real so I agree with what you said about the props being limiting, but only in this one style of map designing. I love your videos that go over ideas with as much depth as this and I like your brother's new video in 2kliksphilip on brain interfacing because of the possibilities and reality of it.

6:50 absolutely agree. Mapping used to be such an independent project. But now it's a team endeavor that could take years even. If you don't know how to model, texture, and do concept art, you're pretty much out of luck. Maps are now disneyland quality, but if we even go back to a map like Assault, it's clear where the difference lies. Everything is models now.

This video screams "I want Source 2's Hammer editor". In Source 2 you can kind of make your own models inside Hammer. It's still not as good as using an actual 3D modeling program but compared to Source 1 it's godlike. You can even edit already existing models. Doing that is difficult since you can easily fuck up the UV maps but it allows you to make slight changes or to remove parts that you don't want. Also these "parts" shown around 8:00 seem to be made for the new "tile meshes" feature of Source 2. This video shows two examples of tile meshes: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lKGfnGuMhX5hq34 (Careful not to ejaculate while watching this) You can even make a displacement out of a single surface without "destroying" the other surfaces attached to it. This also explains why you see displacement in the new and updated maps. They are much easier to make and update in the new Hammer so I'm pretty sure they used an updated Hammer editor to make them. Something you can do in Source 2: Turn an existing 3D model to a mesh editable in Hammer, add displacements to multiple faces of the mesh, modify the displacements, bake the displacements into the mesh, combine (simplify) complex faces (if too complex), update the UV map (if required) and turn the mesh back to a model (.vmdl). The new Hammer is pretty crazy. You can even use a local grid! That makes editing angled wall or buildings much easier.

Playing the game casually, I feel like the Defusal Group sigma feels more like the old CS than Delta, Most of the maps in Delta are the ones in the active duty map pool and they look too fancy and colorful for me. And because those maps were also designed to be competitive, it feels like every object in the map is strategically placed. I think that also takes the casual fun feeling that Group Sigma offers.

I wonder if de_italy is next. Valve killed all the maps I liked the most one after the other. I think I like unbalanced maps better, because they are more intense. It already started before the game even began, you asked yourself if you would start on the side with the advantage or the disadvantage. Playing on the side with the disadvantage made every victory you wrestled out of your opponents hands so much sweeter, and on the side with the advantage you could feel more powerful and get into a flow by winning round after round until you felt too save and a desperate strategy by the other team caught you off guard and interrupted your flow by winning a round. Then they won another round, fear started to creep in. You thought: "I can't afford to lose so many rounds on the easy side, every round they take now, I'll have to fight so hard to get back when we switch." ... I loved that stuff, too bad Valve thinks there is no place for these kind of maps anymore. CS became so streamlined that it kinda stopped to be a fun game, it's now a serious game, a serious sports game. They had to tag on a completely different game to even get new players in the game, because there is no place for casual play anymore. They should get rid of all maps but de_dust2 already and just change the color of it every other round or something.

Presumably a large portion of the new players are from the Chinese market. CS1.6 was way more popular than you 'd think, so I bet most new players still know the map despite it has been removed for 3 years now.

Please do a video on CSGO set to high priority and the affinity, eventual consequences and damages, nobody on the web has a real explanation for anything regarding csgo in high priority!

I’m lucky enough to have started CSGO just before that update that deleted Aztec and Dust and so many other old maps. So I know a few of them at least.

You know I#M maybe a bit late but all in all I must say that I really miss the old times with Aztec, Militia and italy. All of the maps weren't perfect but all were fun to play. One of my first matchmaking maps was Milia and me (as a noob) tryharded so much with my friends on this map. I really miss those old times where we played maps like Aztec or Militia :( R.I.P. ols CS:GO

when ancient was released i was getting hyped up by "it's a mix of cobblestone and aztec". I was disappointed when I found out it's neither of those except for the theme

you can use decals to add moss to some of the more whitewashed models to blend them with the environment and stay close to the theme. plus if you want, i would be happy to lend a hand with modelling

I was a bit skeptical of skillshare, because I could spend 20 minutes on youtube still find good tutorial. But if you're sponsoring skill share, I know it has the kliksphilip stamp of approval.

I think it's quite clear that the reason why Ancient isn't Aztec but only a spiritual successor to Aztec is that Aztec wasn't a good map anymore. Don't get me wrong, it is iconic, but just like Dust 1, Aztec's old, imbalanced layout just wasn't suited for modern CS:GO's highly polished gameplay.

I have a theory that ancient is just a map to test the model visibility of new/all characters especially in dark areas (where I see the outline highlight)
